achievement points

CAGiversary!
Everyday on xbox, there are always people discussing achievements. It doesn't matter who i talk to, a lot of people try to get all the achievements in a game. My question is "WHY!!!!" The gamer points don't benefit you in any way! Whats the point of spending time getting pissed off at an achievement? I think that microsoft should give benefits to people who do get the achievements. If there were benefits that came with unlocking acchievements then it could make them fun and interesting. Imagine a world where microsoft gave you a free xbox live arcade game if someone unlocked a ton of achievements. Thats a world i want to live in =D

Everyday seems to be an exaggeration. Maybe once a week?

But yea, I agree, achievement points are pretty useless.

Points are like a cumulative "high score". You're right they don't mean anything but to me they give me some fun objectives and at the very least a few score points to show for it.

Just like anything else in a game, it's for fun... Why do people play games? You don't get anything for playing games. You're losing money by giving it to someone else so you can play them. Why would Microsoft give away free arcade games? Microsoft doesn't get anything for giving away free arcade games. Why are you asking why people get achievements? That was rather pointless as well and you don't get anything for asking about it either. What's the meaning of life? Stop playing games. Every waking moment needs to be a brilliantly illuminating and life changing experience. Otherwise it's just a waste of time.

i have nothing against earning the occasional achievement, but its when people try to get EVERY one of them and then complain about the ones they can't get. Also, the xbox live arcade game idea was just a suggestion, even a new theme that i don't have to pay for would be cool

You mean my life won't acquire more meaning if I go back and get the last 10 bobble heads in Fallout 3? All of you won't hoist me up on your shoulders and carry me into the Pantheon of Achievement Greats?

But in all seriousness, while the points are ultimately useless, I do feel as though they slow you down and make you appreciate a game more. You're more will to explore and do extra things if you end up getting achievements. Otherwise you'll just charge through the game and that's that.

To enhance the game and give you more of a reason to play them. I'll play shit on my 360 just because I'll probably get some achievements for it.

I've had Resistance 1 on PS3 for 4-5 months now but I haven't been able to muster my way through that shitty game. If it had trophies I probably would've beat it a long time ago.

Achievments are cool because it shows you actually did that.. you know back in the day you'd be tellin a friend yeah I beat blah blah blah and they'd be like yeah.. you're full of shit, now all the cool shit you do in a game is saved and you've got proof.

They are useless, yes, but I enjoy getting them. It makes the game more fun if you ask me. I would never have gone back through a game on the hardest difficulty if I didn't get something in return. Back in the day, I would go through a game once on a normal/easy difficulty and then never play it again. With achievements, I go through the storyline 2-3 times and I notice more things every time. It actually does get me involved into the story more.

they add a some replay value to the games. going back to try to get some of the achievements.
i might go slightly out of my way to get one or two, but for the most part, just whatever i get while playing the game normally is all i usually get.
the part i don't get are the ones who will go rent/buy some crappy game they'd never normally play just to get the achievements from it.

You wasted time starting a thread about achievements....it sounds to me that achievements won!!!! :applause:

If someone has fun pooping on a plate and serving it to themselves for dinner while they watch elephant porn, who cares if someone else does not like it. People enjoy achievements. They also enjoy missing football games, dressing up, and going to a building every Sunday and worshiping a man who will send you to a place of fire if you do not believe in him, or happen to be born in the other 80% of the world that does not even really have a chance to be exposed to him. If no one liked achievements they would go away.

now I got to get back to my movie and dinner.

If it wasn't for gamerscore and achievements I would have never beat cod:4 and cod:waw on veteran and got 1000/1000 each

While I haved stopped "achievement whoring", my time doing that actually had me playing games I never would have played that I actually ended up enjoying. It works both ways, sometimes you will find something you end up loving, other times you will end up hating the game more than most others since you actually try to play the game for the achievements. It was worth it to me since I got some enjoyment out of a few of the games, but I didn't make myself suffer too much either.

I am not going to even ask where you got the elephant porn..

I like them to add longevity to games I'd otherwise just play once through. However, people worried about their gamerscore and buy crappy games with easy achievements just to boost their score are beyond pathetic/lame (whichever one is less mean to you) to me.

Congrats. Your e-peen is larger!

Again, that is your opinion. I ended up enjoying a lot of games I would have never even given a chance do to playing for achievements for a while. It had nothing to do with bragging, ego, or anything like that, I just got more enjoyment out of the games by actually earning something (even if it was just worthless points). I don't play games for achievements anymore unless it is a game I absolutely love, but that is more because I have grown bored of gaming for the most part, not because of "crappy games" or because the points are worthless.

I get achievements because they make a game last longer, plain and simple. If I really like a game, I'm going to get the achievements.
If it wasn't for achievements, Resident Evil 5 would've lasted me 15-20 hours tops. It would have been 1st play through, second play through, then the dust shelf. But because of achievements, I've played the game for a good 37 hours already.

Same reason why completing challenges in COD is fun.

P.S.
I got a bigger E-COCK

Yes. Some people just do it for fun. I like collecting achievements to add more enjoyment and challenges to games I would have otherwise been done with. I'm not saying everyone does it just for points and the like. Sorry for the confusion. I wasn't generalizing. :)

If I really like a game I will try to get as many achievements as possible (L4D, Fallout 3). If a game is just average or subpar then I really don't care about them at all.

5k more zombies to decimate before Genocidest!

Achievement points to me are more reason to go back through a game, so i think it adds more replay to most games. Other than personal challenges to get them, i dont really talk about them much. I dont really care how many points some dude has either.

You could say the same thing about video games as a whole. Why play them at all? If getting achievements is fun for you, great. If not, don't worry about them.

Now the multiplayer of some games gets FUBARed by people wanting to just boost achievements in random matches versus playing the game. You get that in Halo 3 every now and then and that is annoying. Don't expect randoms you meet in the game to want to stand around trading kills or all gather in a group so you can kill them all with one grenade.

Dude, fuck you. The Mile High Club on Vet is KILLING me. I'm jealous of your 1000...:bomb:

Yeah its annoying when people ask if people will allow them to get some kind of achievement. I mean laying down instead of them "achieving" it. Seriously i suck at halo 3 and i was able to get at least 3 double laser kills on my own legit. Yet that seemed to be one of the achievements i heard people asking for regularly.

I love achievements it gives you something to aim for in a game and keep playing it. But yea it can get over obsessive with people asking for you to do stupid shit for them to get points...

achievements are something to strive for. They don't mean much but I look at them as a checklist of cool things I've done gamewise. Achievements push people to try new things out. A great example is Mirrors Edge, I rented and loved that game but without achievements I probably would have done one playthrough and shipped it back to gamefly but I did enjoy the game enough to want to complete it in it's entirety which turned a relatively short game into a seriouse time sink and while I was frustrated as all hell trying to get some of the achievements in the end it just feels so satisfying to have a full 1000 and mirrors edge ended up being my favorite game of the year.
