I truly want to know why you believe sphiatt's products were anything remotely similar to amazon or rightstuf.
Bootleg site.
As a CAG veteran yourself, I would expect more from you. I'm still shocked to see so many anime fans continue to wonder whether a site sells bootleg or authentic, especially if he/she knows about rightstuf or amazon.com.
Product detail description at sphiatt clearly shows major deviations from legitimate releases.
Sphiatt sells only bootleg items. I don't believe they have a domestic release section.

I've used ShopSPHiatt before and had no problems with them. I purchased quite a number of video game and anime soundtracks from them. I don't know about their DVDs but the CDs I purchased are legitimate. (Though actually since I don't know much about the bootleg industry, I suppose it is possible that they still could be bootleg, just super high quality bootlegs indistinguishable from the real thing. )

Their CDs are also bootlegs, and are *quite* distinguishable from the real thing. You got F'd in the A, hardcore.

First of all, you need to know about the product you intend to buy. This is *not* hard, as the information for just about any game or anime soundtrack can be found through a quick search. Bootlegs are almost always significantly cheaper in price than the real thing - that's usually the most obvious sign. If a retailer doesn't list the proper publisher or catalog number, that's another red flag. Basically, be an educated shopper and you won't get screwed.

I did a little research and it turns out that all the CD's I purchased (from ShopSPHiatt) are bootlegs from Taiwan. 
The labels are K-O Records and Miya Records both of which are Taiwanese labels that produce nearly identical bootleg copies of Japanese media. (Thanks for the link Kirin Lemon)
I lived in Brazil for over two years so I guess in my mind the word bootleg conjured up images of DVD jackets that looked like they'd been printed on an inkjet and then cut-out with scissors and with burned DVD-Rs in the cases (everything imported from Paraguay of course). Well anyways now I know better. Now if you'll excuse me while I go hit my head on a wall for a bit. 
EDIT: I found another of my CDs with the label Yuanding, so a total of three different bootleg labels now.
