I was a fan of 3rd Watch.
I never knew why they decided to end that one, although the storylines were getting pretty weak. Plus Wyclef wasn't helping.

Third Watch was one of my top 5 shows. It went for 6 seasons (I think) and I'm surprised it went that long. NBC put it in, I believe, 5 different time slots and barely showed any support for it. I still have a problem w/NBC's treatment of Boomtown when it was on. That was one of the best shows to debut in the last 5 years and they treated like Fear Factor should have been treated. I'll always have my DVD box set, at least.

Now playing (& watching):

:br:-Justified season 5

:pc:-Marvel Puzzle Quest

I didn't notice My Wife and Kids at first. I'm surprised at that one. That one was a show I liked to watch somewhat regularly.

I would really be just as happy to see the Star Trek franchise end as a film and TV property. Comics and novels offer some potential to do more with it since there are no issues of actor availability and other issues.

For all the talk of behind the scenes friction it came down to the numbers. There has been everything short of gunfire exchanges between Trek production executive since TNG started. That show was horrible until Roddenberry was essentially kicked out by giving him a big office far away from the sound stages. The change in quality was quite distinct. The same can said for a lot of shows. Andromeda had a palace coup and much of the core writing staff that had really created the show from Roddenberry's outline (which was an outer space rehash of 'Genesis II' from the 70's that had almost the exact same continuing premise of rebuilding civilizational, except in a world connected by a global subway [I'm not kidding] instead of interstellar scale. The lead character even had the same name, Dylan Hunt.) were kicked out and everything went to Hell from there. Except for having Brandy Ledford on hand to look cute the entire last season was a confused mess. It isn't being cancelled so much as given a mercy killing.

The Trek franchise has become far too weighed down in continuity issues and its anachronistic origin. On top of this there was little effort made towards overall continuity on the original show and so writers got to drag in their pet concepts no matter how ill suited to the setting. Writers on the later series were expected to treat it all as official history despite the contradictions and plain weird-ass stuff. By the time it came to Enterprise the writers were like time travellers afraid to take a step for fear they'd move a pebble and contradict the already written future.

A big problem was that they attempted to serve the core audience of Trek in such a way that casual viewers, who were critical to decent ratings, got bored or confused by stuff that had the geeks thrilled. And even the geeks were divided in whether they approved every time something with future rerecussions occurred, some went into such apoplectic snits they'd refuse to accept the very existence of the show drove down the ratings even farther.

Too bad, there were great geek moments in that last season. The mirror universe two-parter that invoked elements from no less than three seemingly unrelated episodes of the original series was great. Especially how it was treated as an entire mirror universe Star Trek series, right down to having its own opening titles sequence reflecting the different culture of that world. Tons of fun but much too expensive when so much of the viewing audience was left going WTF.

I'd have liked it a lot more if they'd said, screw Kirk, Picard, and all the rest of them, we're starting from scratch with a show reflecting how people look upon these things almost forty years after the original show started development. They' d be free to make all kinds of references to what went before but also free to not care if they weren't on a path to creating the universe of Kirk, Picard, etc.

Of course, there is one way to see such shows. Look elsewhere than the Trek franchise. Babylon 5 did more for well under a million bucks an episode on a dinky little sound stage near North Hollywood than Paramount has done with far more expensive efforts for many years. I'd rather see a single good writer like JMS and his chosen staff given a reasonable budget with a two season guarantee in advance than another Star Trek anything.
If I thought I needed to get out in the sunshine I'd play Boktai.

I actually liked Kevin Hill on UPN even though it was pretty predictable/cliched.

I'm glad Veronica Mars is returning. The first season was well written, actual high school characters that acted like real high school kids.

I liked and followed Smallville up till this past season. It just got too weird and had that crappy comic book/tv feel to it.

I was hoping it would last long enough to give James Franciscus a posthumous cameo. Perhaps an unsolved case file in Braille from Longstreet's unsolved cases file.

I'm sooo pissed that Carnivale isn't coming back. I do kinda understand though cause that show must cost a fucking fortune to bankroll. Oh well, I'll get over it, but my girlfriend is gonna be crushed.

I just got the season one boxset for "Boomtown" and I must agree - its indeed a very smart yet different style of crime show and I'm enjoying it so far. Its too bad that good quality shows like this never really get the publicity they deserve while crap like all those lame reality shows get pushed endlessly.

I am glad to see "Lost" renewled tho. :D

With four posts already, this seems to be the most lamented show. Why the heck does HBO run it against desparate housewives and popular awards shows?

ARGH - Arliss runs forever and Carnivale doesn't get a second chance.

And "The Next Great Chimp" gets cancelled too. Worst. Day. Evar.

Oh and yes I know the Real World isn't a high school show but it might as well be considering EVERYONE on their acts like they're in high school.

Glad to see that revelations and Last commic standing got canned, to bad I can't say the same about star gate.

Revelations didn't get canned, it was a miniseries and it ended.

As for the TV shows that got canned, I didn't watch any of them except maybe Scare Tactics whenever nothing else was on and if I happened to put it on the SciFi channel and it was showing, so I'm not going to cry over that.

Most of the TV shows I watch that are airing new episodes are returning, so I'm happy. I can't wait for the new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Yes, but the type of minseries that could easily see a sequel, if of course the rating had justified it. Besides it was in the canceled column.

Shame about the Kelsey Grammar Sketch Show. I thought it was half way decent.

As did I, it was very comical.

I'll miss Contender and Scare Tactics, but it's good to see that UFC will be back.

In fact, Spike will air several live UFC fights, too. I can't wait.

Well damn i would have liked to the that NOES show. The two im most pissed about is Joan of Arcadia and Judging Amy. Its crary how you never reliese how many shows there really are till you see a list of them. Like half of them are cancelled.

I'm still amazed that Arrested Development is coming back for another season. I thought it was just too much to hope for. For the first time since Futurama was cancelled, I don't completely hate FOX.

Scrubs and The Office returning as well is just icing on the cake. For me, all is right with the world.

You have great TV taste. They are my top 3 favorite comedies.. and #4 is 2.5 Men (it really is funny!)....

Big Fat Obnoxious Boss was a reality show that I actually enjoyed because it made all those business people look like fools.

Hopefully USA will pick up Heat and Velocity as well when they grab Raw this fall.

heat and velocity did not get canned, WWE heat & velocity is still on tv and the osbournes did not get cancelled there contract was up and they did not want to renew. I never watched the osbournes but if you read the newspaper it will tell you this. no offense but you list is not completely accurate.

I can't wait till season 4 of The Dead Zone starts...It's taking FOREVER! I wanna know what's gonna happen with Stillson and Rebecca...Though more importantly...They need Dana to come back!

And the only show I really will miss on the cancelled show was Eyes. Tim Daly was pretty damn good in it, and I enjoyed watching it...
