PS3 Slim *Update*

Another possibly "frustrating" leak for Sony, word comes from our buddies at Joystiq Japan and Engadget Chinese that two Taiwanese manufacturing companies have been awarded contracts to build Sony's new streamlined PS3, affectionately known as the PS3 Slim. According to UDN.com, half of the orders have gone to Taiwanese group Foxconn, while the other half has gone to Pegatron. The units are expected to start shipping in early July "to cope with expected summer vacation demands."

The news has a ring of truth to it, given that the two firms have manufactured the original PS3. The timing also makes sense, as Japan actually buys most of its game consoles during the summer vacation period (as opposed to the winter holidays in the west). Still, all of this info comes from anonymous sources, so take it with a very hearty helping of salt.

Assuming the news is true, it would mesh well with the PS3 Slim rumors we've heard so far, most notably that Ars Technica expected the units to hit the market in August or September. Add this to the string of rumors and leaks -- even some purported images of the unit itself -- and the PS3 Slim looks like it could be hitting the ground sooner rather than later.

I saw something about Sony patenting a thing that's basically PS2 emulation via the Cell. I'd assume if that's true, it'd run on any PS3.

I bought a PS3 a few weeks ago and initially thought I'd be bummed about having a slim one come out shortly after. However, part of me thinks having a larger one might not be so bad since it's got room for that big ass-fan. *shrug*

It won't be any cheaper. The PStwo was the same price as the phat when it released.

Also, don't you guys think that Sony would've revealed it at E3? According to the article, the Slim comes out before the PSPGO but only the GO gets presentation time?

The slim PS2 also had mad press releases way before it came out. Why would Sony pull a Sega and just release it before building up hype?

You guys need to stop being so gullible. It'll be cool when it comes out but I'm not holding my breath.
They might just be working on a PS2 emulator and new chip sets, which will go into standard triples.
Even if they did that, they would've made a big announcement at E3 or somewhere.

Is a slim PS3 even needed? Who was asking for a new form factor? Now the 360, which has been on the market longer, seems most deserving of a refresh.

I think they should spend more time making an update for the newer 80gb and 160gb consoles so that they can play ps2. It pisses me off that only some models can.

i think it may be a third form of an accessory (I think I mispelled it but wgaf) i think its something u plug in like a usb type thing just guessing must wait to find out

The new form factor is necessary to reduce costs. That's the main reason to do it.

I think, purely on speculation, that this will be released when Madden '10 comes out. It wasn't announced at E3 since, assuming there will be a price cut to go along with it, it would have killed PS3 sales for 2 months.
I'll bet anything that this is for PS2 downloads on the PS Store and not to play the old PS2 discs. Never forget that they are only in it for money and hos.
As long as I can play them on the PSP2 it's cool.
Being able to play any PS2 game on any PS3 would be amazing. I might have to get one for myself if that happens.
If you bought one at launch you'd have that dream fulfilled. My 60 gig PS3 runs all PS1 and PS2 games...then again it basically has PS1 and PS2 hardware shoved in that bastard.

Every PS3 plays PS1 games.

So what are the odds of a new system hitting by August? I took part in the Amazon trade-in promo, and I want my PS3 now--I've waited this long. I just don't want to be disappointed if I buy one now and a new one comes out in a month.

I don't think that they will be available until the late fall. I'm thinking it will be announced at TGS, for a release date of November, just in time for the Christmas rush.

As for the price, they need to bring the price down if they want to move consoles. I think that they will probably release them at the normal price of $399 and drop the prices of the 'phats', so they can clear those out. Then I think when they are cleared out, the slim will be the main SKU.

I'm not buying that because if you look at the back of it (for about the 2 seconds they show the back) there seems to be a partial Composite input and no other inputs.

Although I'll admit, it does look pretty slick.

Until that "system" boots up and plays MGS4 then I call BS.

The looks ~60% shorter than PS3Phat, which is amazing if true. And it does look exactly like the supposedly leaked pictures on the PS3 Slim's cardboard box.

i call BS on that vid.. i doubt some flipinos are gonna have their hands on this thing *im flipino by the way lol*
BC has been pretty much guaranteed to be coming in the form of a firmware update (software emulation).
I wouldn't be so sure of that. Sony has not made any confirmation about this point, right now its all conjecture based on a patent filing.

Frankly, I think that this is just Sony preparing to sell PS2 games on the PSN Store. I don't think they will patch the backwards compatability back into the firmware. Software emulation that is more specifically tailored for individual games will allow them to improve the experience. It will also make the PSN Store the go-to place for acquiring PS2 games to play on your PS3. As villanous as it sounds, they could make some serious bank with that approach.

Take this for what it is worth. I was at Target last night. I noticed all their PS2 games were $19.82 (even new releases like Ghostbusters). I asked the clerk what was up. She said they are no longer going to stock the PS2. She also said the new PS3 were going to give the owner the ability to purchase software which would allow all none b/c PS3's the ability to play PS2 games. Given the recent patent obtained by Sony, maybe there is someting to this.

Let's hope, PS3 Slim-20GB-$300...

Pretty sure it is going to be 120gb. Question is the price. Given their past track record, I could see Sony keeping it at $399 and justifying the price by saying it is really is a "reduction" because you get 40gb more than the 80gb at $399. Kind of BS when you consider that you can go buy a WD Scorpio Blue 250gb replacement HD for $50. If they would reduce the price to $300, there would be no excuse in the world not get one.

Gotta agree with the $300 thing. I took part in the GameStop trade in by trading in an old, spare PS2 and some games and got my 80gb PS3 for

No, because Sony went out of there way to make the point that the GO is not a replacement of the PSP, it sells alongside it. E3 was very PSP heavy, pimping the solid games lineup they have. Those games would be playable on any version of the PSP, with totally different price points, and different features. You mention a new PS3 version which appears to be replacing the existing PS3 (reports of retailers no longer ordering "regular" PS3s for the next few months), then Sony would've completely killed console sales from May-release.

See, it's not gulible, it's logic and reasoning.

Yeah I see whst your saying it's just i would be absolutley fine with 20GB, I have a 20gb 360 and im a hardcore gamer and i still have about 2GB to spare.

Agreed. They have a crap load of PS3's they have to unload befor they even tease the slim. If they announce a slim and an upcomning price reduction, no one would buy the phat. Look at the deal Meijer was offering last month: two, blu-rays, two games and an extra controller for $400. This was a pretty good indication that they needed to move the product.

More intriguing to me is Target no longer carrying the PS2 console.

Release date = September 2, 2009
Announce date = August14, 2009

Will not have Linux OS, and will not have BC. BC to come via download ($99).

Source? $99 seems a bit ridiculous for backwards compatibility...I could understand $49 but at $99 people would likely opt for the PS2 slim.

Source is a reliable contact at Target. She is also the one who told me PS2 is being phased out and that they are no longer restocking. Again could be true Could be crap, but she has never been wrong in the past (correctly informed as to bc being removed, skus and hard drive sizes, various bundles, re-emergence of bc with MGS4, and wii stock in its erly release) . Agreed - $99 is a bit steep but notice that it is exactly what you pay for a slim now? Typical Sony.

While I don't get why Sony would lower the price of the PS2 to $99.99 in April (2009) just to discontinue it a few months later, I can understand the business side at least. With the PS2 off the market, the only other option is to but a PS3...however, that said, you can't expect people to buy a PS3 for $299 and then spend $99 for PS2 BC...this really should be something that is built into the firmware for free or $49 max.

Agreed - but this is Sony. They were just awarded a patent for a process which would allow the current PS3 hardware run PS2 software. Makes more sense to discontinue something that costs maybe $35 to produce, market and sell, force everyone to buy something that retails for $299, then buy an add-on for, lets say for argument, $49 (the download will cost them nothing to sell or market). Even at $49, they would make a killing. If they elimiate the OS on the PS3 slim, they also make it much more difficult to pirate and/or hack the new emulator. Developers are pushing for this - the PS3 is currently the only hardware which is not hacked.
