Although I feel this is a good direction for them to go with the PSP Go, I'm not sure how much of a dent they'll be able to make in the iPhone/iPod Touch market. I'm mainly concerned about the development side of things. The iPhone is a veritable wonderful land of freedom for small independent developers. And this is shown by the immense number of applications that get developed for it. But I haven't heard anything that would lead me to believe Sony is taking a similar approach. As far as I know, it will be business as usual with PSP Go development, with dev kits being restricted to larger companies.

The PSP Go doesn't stand any real chance of overtaking the iPhone so long as its development remains so restricted. The iPhone / iPod Touch will always have a larger and more varied library of software.
awesome

yeah, I know the OP says "iPhone-Like games", but in reality, this thing is getting actual iphone games lol
This is exactly what I was thinking, but I think some of these will work better for the PSP as it has physical inputs that you can feel. One of my biggest issues with iPhone games is that you can easily slide off the controls and not realize it. Good to see that Sony is finally getting that there is money to be made in bite-size offerings. Now if we can just see a ton more PS1 games released.

I don't think Sony's trying to take down the iPhone with the Minis, but to get games of that style, directly or more original stuff, onto the PSP so they can have more content on there. There really isn't much on PSN that is really native to the PSP, especially on the cheaper side, so this should help out quite a bit. If they can make more iPhone games multiplatform, that should be a great help for them.

Pac Man CE is an absolutely awesome game I would love to have on the go. I didn't know that was released for the iphone as well as Live, but I don't have an iphone so I don't pay attention to it. I'm really looking forward to seeing what I've been missing and playing them on my PSP.

Also, I heard Eye of Judgement might be coming to PSP. Does anyone know anything about that?

very cool, i can see alot of good stuff coming from this. i'll be getting burn zombie burn 2D the day it comes out.

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/24/sony-cuts-bandwidth-fees-publisher-penalties-from-psp-minis-ser/

For its PSP Minis service, Sony is doing away with many of the fees associated with other digital networks to attract the attention of developers. As discovered by GamerBytes, the PlayStation Network's bandwidth fee -- for which publishers are charged per gigabyte of data transferred over PSN -- is revoked for the PSP Minis service. It's a somewhat odd decision, considering each Minis game will be limited to under 100MB. Certainly, a bandwidth charge would be one of the smallest fees a PSP Minis developer would have faced.

The PSP Minis program also does away with many of the practices common to WiiWare and Xbox Live. Unlike WiiWare, there is no minimum sales quota for developers to reach before they get paid. Additionally, PSP Minis publishers are allowed to choose their own release dates, instead of joining the growing queue of games awaiting release on both the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live Arcade.
Some nice, new details on incentives for the developers to make PSP Minis.
Awesome. Shovelware avalanche is coming down the mountain.
I'd actually want that. With the amount of shovelware that iphone gets there's enough verity and small gems that pop out that make it worth it.

I hope they allow network features at some point in the future. Leaderboards would probably help a lot of games out, so I'd probably avoid those games for now.

http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2009/09/29/mahjongg-artifacts-chapter-2/

SCEE is doing a smart thing by at least highlighting some of the PSP Minis that are coming out there this week and the first game is Mahjongg Artifacts Chapter 2, the first Mahjong game on there. That means the Minis will be confirmed as a real thing with its release. Apparently, the first Chapter will come later, so you can what leads up to the events of this game later on. No price on the European version.

http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2009/09/28/minis-week-fieldrunners/

Fieldrunners is the highly-acclaimed tower defense game on the iPhone that is about to be released on the PSP. It's supposed to have a lot of new content for this version and costs about 4.99 Euros and 3.99 Pounds, so it'll probably be $4.99 here. There's a trailer in the post if you want to see it in action yourself.

http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2009/09/29/minis-week-kahoots/

Kahoots is a Zoo Keeper/Lemmings hybrid where you swap blocks around to the right positions so your Kahoots can get where they need to be. A neat fact is that they only spent about 30 Pounds on art assets since they scanned, photographed, or drew every asset in the game and used their photoshop and stop motion skills to create every object in the game. It's 2.99 Euros/2.49 Pounds, so a $2.99 price point might be what it is over here.

I didn't know that Creat Studios (Cuboid, Mahjong Tales, Magic Ball) was working on a few of these Minis, but they have one of the launch titles and two more coming at a later date. You can read more on both below:

Creat Studios (Canton, MA) today announced that Alien Havoc will be available as a PSP® Mini launch title for PSP® and PSP®go for download on the PlayStation® Store on October 1st, 2009 and can be purchased for download online or via the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system. Additionally, two other PSP® Mini titles from Creat Studios, Bubble Trubble and Freekscape, will launch this fall.
Alien Havoc throws back to the classic 8-bit era, putting gamers in command of an alien who must pluck cows from farms, load them onto his spaceship, and bring them back to his planet. The farmers, however, won’t let their cows go without a fight. Players must tackle wrapping level layouts, hide and sneak in the cover of tall grass, and throw veggies, rocks, or anything else they can at farmers to bring the livestock back to their space ship.

Alien Havoc Features Include:

-Classic Gameplay. Getting back to the basics, your objective is to fight the farmers and clear each level of all cows and reach the end with the highest score possible.
-Challenge yourself. 20 wacky levels, delivering a mix of mazes, puzzles and action.
-Customizable. Choose from four alien heads and customize the color of your alien’s head and body.

Bubble Trubble challenges players to match colors, inflate and pop bubbles by presenting a dynamic new twist to falling puzzle games. Rotate and drop clusters of colored bubbles, and match like colors together to fuse and grow until they burst. Be sure to combine those matched bubbles together before running out of room. To avoid any Trubble, you’ve gotta burst your Bubble!

Freekscape, developed by Abdução Studios in San Paolo, Brazil and published by Creat Studios, introduces Freek, a cute little demon who found a holy trident which infused him with ideas of ascending to Heaven. Help Freek escape the fire and brimstone in this action platform adventure by attaching a variety of hellish creatures to his trident, turning it into different tools, depending on each enemy’s property. Run, jump, attack and solve puzzles to advance Freek through a twisted 3D netherworld.

“Alien Havoc is a true return to the classic arcade games from the 1980s with simple, yet wildly entertaining gameplay,” said Vladimir Starzhevsky, CEO of Creat Studios. “Along with Bubble Trubble’s new spin on puzzle games, and the exciting action of Freekscape, we are thrilled to be among the first developers at the launch of Sony’s new PSP® Mini platform, and believe strongly in the downloadable games model that the PSP® Mini platform supports.”

Pricing of the Launch Date Games (As of October 1st, 1 AM EST)

Alien Havoc- 4.99
Brainpipe- 4.99
Field Runners - 6.99
Funky Punch- 4.99
Tetris - 9.99
Sudoku - 4.99

The OP's updated with prices and the actual launch lists. It's a bit of a disappointment that they only have half of the full 15 games that they said would be out for the launch.
The OP's updated with prices and the actual launch lists. It's a bit of a disappointment that they only have half of the full 15 games that they said would be out for the launch.
I wouldn't be surprised if they are holding some of the games back just so they have content to release each week when they post their regular updates.

The developers have the ability to choose their own release dates, whether that's just week or the actual day is unclear, so it shouldn't be a matter of Sony dictating how many go out each week.

Hopefully the developers are just trying to release their games when there's not a lot of competition at launch and we'll see releases in the coming weeks.

http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2009/10/01/minis-week-brainpipe-and-bloons/

Here's a quick look at Brainpipe, which came out today on the US Store, and Bloons, an upcoming game that's already out in the UK Store. Brainpipe seems to be some kind of tunnel navigation game where you're aiming your large cursor to catch special items and avoid obstacles.

Bloons is a puzzle game where you toss a dart into the air to pop baloons until you beat the level.

http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2009/10/01/minis-week-creat-studios/

Alien Havoc, one of our launch titles, is described as something of a stealth game where you're trying to steal cows from farms without being caught by protective farmers.

Bubble Trubble is a puzzle game where you combine like-colored bubbles so they get bigger until they pop.

Freekscape seems to be a 3D platformer starring a demon that gets ahold of a trident that they can transform into different forms by attaching a creature to it that you've captured.

http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2009/09/30/minis-week-gameshastra-studios/

D-Cube Planet is a sliding puzzle game where you're playing as an alien that crash lands on this slider puzzle-style planet that he must get through to collect all of the pieces of his ship to get out. There's a trailer showing off how it plays along with how low budget these guys are since it's not a source video, but of an actual PSP playing the game.

Circles is a brain teaser puzzle game that's hard to describe, so check out the trailer and use the pause button liberally as the guy playing it goes through the tutorial quickly.

These guys are supposedly working on 30 Minis, so they'll be releasing a few games a month.

Edit: I also noticed an FAQ on the SCEE site about the Minis, so you can read this if you want to learn a bit more about the service itself

Yeah I go to www.pspminis.com
They're actually raffling a PSP GO. (Hope I win ^_^, I don't have a PSP.. lol)

Their reviews are very unbiased, and your rightFrisky, It makes me want to pick up Sudoku too.!

I saw somewhere mention that the ESRB ratings are what kept the launch list to be half the size of what was expected, so that may be what delays releases more than the approval process itself.

But man, I'm so glad the site is legitimate. They deserve my respect.

Since there's actually alot of rigged contests out there just to gain more attention.
Now I know how dedicated webmasters/admins are on their websites.

Best of luck to PSPminis!

I mentioned the ESRB thing before as being the reason for the lack of games here.

Of course the ESRB costs money, it shouldn't cause them to keep their prices higher though. I can see it being a temporary thing if they see a decent amount of sales, which would necessitate It kind of goes hand-in-hand with the lax approval process so they avoid the kinds of controversial games that appeared on the iPhone's app store (games about shaking babies and others), though Sony should consider offering a rebate for developers once they get to a certain amount of sales or something like that to encourage more competitive pricing and less safety net pricing.
I didn't see this Minis thread... Question, can the Minis be shared?
I'd like to know that too.. But I'm pretty sure you can.. I think..
