Another year passes and its time for a new NBA game with 2K leading the way.
NBA 2K10 is raising the bar again with another Championship season. NBA 2K9, the #1 selling & #1 rated NBA videogame, set the standard for all basketball videogames, and NBA 2K10 surpasses that by delivering an even better basketball experience this year with all-new gameplay components, out-of-this-world graphics, even more realistic Signature Style animations, all-new presentation elements and an unrivalled online system -- this season you won’t just play the NBA, you’ll TAKE OVER.
Developer Insights - Audio
For NBA 2K10, my fellow audio team and I decided that our audio presentation needed to be a major point of emphasis. We really wanted to take the broadcast feel of the audio integration to the next level.

To that end, we overhauled our commentary and crowd, which we believe makes NBA 2K10 one of the most realistic audio experiences in sports games. New dialogue for the NBA Today feature reflects the dynamics of the real-NBA season, providing a level of context never experienced before.

Commentary

While we always added to the commentary on a yearly basis, we needed a way to bring out more of the talent’s personality while delivering natural dialogue. It was time for a reboot.

One of the main complaints about previous versions of NBA2K was that Kevin and Clark didn’t have a connection and didn’t sound like they were in the booth together. The problem was simple—they weren’t. This year, we were able to get them in the booth at the same time, livening up the performances and providing a more natural cadence that comes through on broadcast.

To help with the side-by-side feel, we brought over a new conversational system from MLB 2K that is peppered throughout the game: Return to Topic. For example, Clark Kellogg might mention a team getting outhustled on the boards, and after a few play-by-play calls, Kevin and Clark will return to the topic, expanding upon the rebounding conversation. One of the Return to Topic segments weaved into the action is called game trend analysis: discussions of statistical trends throughout the game and making quarter-to-quarter comparisons. After an in-game conversation or breakdown, Kevin will also follow up with a play call that catches you up on the action: “So now it’s Orlando on offense, following the 3 pointer by Kobe. . .”

Next, we needed to make the season come alive with our new NBA Today feature, calling out the details that help put the particular game in context of the season. NBA Today is discussed in a previous Insight. You’ll hear a totally new approach to the introduction sequence, breaks in the action, and our in-game play-by-play and color analysis flow.

Our broadcast introduction has been completely overhauled, bringing a fresh vibe to the game, while debuting many of our new NBA Today elements. Kevin Harlan will set the stage, pointing out streaking or lagging teams and players, injuries, and trades, while Clark Kellogg provides the analysis of the teams and explains why they’re playing well or why they’re struggling.

During breaks in the action, Kevin and Clark will go Around the League and provide scoring updates from the NBA, discuss leaders for all the major stats, update you on conference standings, including playoff seeding and game implications, and deliver single game promotions of upcoming NBA games, including the All-Star game.

During the action, the play-by-play commentary is interspersed with real-life facts that touch on how the players and teams are doing during the season and how they played in their last outing. You’ll hear Kevin and Clark discuss a team’s previous win or loss, and what the determining factors were in that game. We also recap the last matchup between the two teams, for example mentioning Detroit won by 3 points last time they played the Knicks earlier in the year. When two teams meet up for the first time in the season, Kevin and Clark break down last year’s season series, and will also recap the outcome of a playoff encounter between the two teams. Other bits of information are included recognizing a player’s recent performance such as Lebron James coming off a 38 point game against Denver, or the fact that Dwight Howard had an off-night in Orlando’s loss to the Celtics in the previous game.

We’ve also included a “Keys to the Game” segment, which is built into our NBA Today feature. Clark Kellogg will discuss a team or player’s trends going into the game and point out streaks and slumps that are occurring in the real life NBA season or in your Association. Clark has a large amount of new dialogue this year, and is much more involved throughout the broadcast. I think you guys will like Clark’s input much more this year.

In all, we’ve added over twenty-thousand new lines of dialogue this year in support of our new commentary systems. Kevin and Clark were fantastic as always, providing valuable insight and helping to bring these new systems to life. The dialogue in NBA 2K10 is a major step toward delivering natural broadcast commentary.

Crowd and Arena

This year we wanted to provide a more dynamic and varied approach to the crowd systems. We wanted big moments to stand out more from the lower energy points in a game. We rewrote the logic and the crowd behaves much more realistically, thanks to this peaks and valleys concept.

You can also expect to hear more detailed crowd behavior that appropriately follows the action. Whether it’s thundering applause as the coach for the away team calls a timeout to stop a run, or deafening silence when Kobe nails a dagger into the hopes of the Orlando fans as he drains a three. Of course, if you’re playing especially poorly, the crowd will let you hear that as well. Anticipation is a big part of the crowd experience. If you’re lining up a three-point shot with Hedo Turkoglu, you can hear the electricity in the arena build up, and then explode into cheers if he knocks it down.

Every year we try to deepen the arena specific experience. For 2K10, we’ve expanded on our arena specific crowd chants and PA music selections so that every arena has a sound of its own, including stadium specifc organ sounds for common themes like the defense chants at Staples Center. Each arena has unique PA dialogue too which makes you feel like you’re there. For example, at the Palace of Auburn Hills you’ll hear the familiar call and response between the PA announcer and the crowd: “DEE-troit BASKETBALL!”. You’ll also hear the response “Mellow! Mellow!” after Carmello Anthony scores, and when the PA announcer calls out “Jose Calderon for 3!”, the crowd chimes in with “Unos!, Dos!, Tres!”- adding a touch of realism of being amidst the Raptors fans in Toronto.

We’ve also added intelligent crowd chatter with individual voices commenting on the action and the flow of the game. They’ll yell about players being open, what they thought about a shot or play, or just generally whoop it up.

Soundtrack

2K Sports holds to the long-standing reputation of bringing an eclectic mix of breaking and established artists to its gaming audience with NBA 2K10’s soundtrack. No doubt that this is the biggest soundtrack to ever grace a 2K Sports game- both in terms of the number of tracks, and the star power of the artists represented. The full list is below (* denotes tracks that are available to download for free here):

Ace Hood - Top of the World
Adam Tensta - My Cool
Akala - The Edge
Al Kapone - Rock This
Chali2na - Lock it Down (Instrumental)
Chali2na – International (feat. Beenie Man)
Donnie Bravo - Run Away *
Duo Live - Shootin
Flo Rida - ROOTS
Iglu & Hartly - In this City
Illinois - Hang On
Izza Kizza - They’re Everywhere *
K’naan - Wavin’ the Flag
Kanye West - Amazing
Kenan Bell - Like This
Matisyahu - One Day
Metric - Help I’m Alive
Metronomy - Radio Ladio
MGMT - Electric Feel
Mike Snow - Black & Blue
Naïve New Breeders - Can’t Choose
Ratatat - Falcon Jab
Ratatat - Mirando
Saul Williams - List of Demands (Reparations)
Sportrushaz - Iron
The Game - Champion (Exclusive and original track)
The Moog - Joyclad Armies
Vincent Van Go Go - Do You Know

As you can clearly see from the above, the soundtrack offers more hits than ever before with some of the hip-hop highlights include “Amazing” by Kanye West, “R.O.O.T.S.” from Flo Rida, “One Day” by Matisyahu, and “Top of the World” by Ace Hood just to name a few. And we’ve also included a huge selection in the indie & rock categories, as Ratatat, MGMT, and Iglu and Hartly are also some of the emerging acts represented on the soundtrack. And of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention our original track by The Game. The Game, who by the way was #1 on PS3 NBA 2K9 leaderboards last time I checked and a winner of Team 2K, created an awesome track called “Champion” for 2K10. He is pretty pumped to be on the soundtrack as he stated recently, “I've been a beast at NBA 2K for years, I was #1 on the PS3 leaderboards, and challenge anybody online to go up against me," said The Game. "When 2K Sports hit me to drop a new track for NBA 2K10, I knew I had to do it."

End of the Road

I know a lot of you have been asking us for this and NBA 2K10 delivers. For the first time, you can import your personal music and have it played through the PA system on your XBOX 360. I haven’t been able to touch on every new audio feature that we have in store for you. Hopefully, you’re as excited about the new features as we are here at 2K. We’re working hard to break some new ground in sports game audio, but I think we’re just starting to scratch the surface of what’s possible. Enjoy!

I downloaded the trial last night got a feel for it, then realized that I already had the 400pts so I now have it. Currently working on my prospect right now.

got the draft combine game. so damn short. but fun fun fun.

man that drills game where you have to block the npc's shot is freaking impossible to get gold on.

I made a 7'1 Athletic Center 220lbs

Had an overall rating of 43 and was projected as a 2nd round 9th pick to the San Antonio Spurs.

I will restart him though since I totally fucked up on 2 of those shot blocking drills.

Only wish that you could do more than 6 drills. like 3 between every game would have been better IMO.

6'8" Face Up PF OVR 50.

Yeah.. I like the AI this year. Can't wait for the full build of 2k10. This is a pleasing start. =D Hate the trailer though because it shows the Clippers getting run over, haha.

This is one game were I will actually use the feature that allows you to take a player through a career. For some reason basketball is just more appealing to me. Can't wait to pick up the full version, plus KOBE's on the front...OH YEAH!

I think I'm going to have to get this again this year even though I don't usually buy sports games in consecutive years(I'm also doing it with NHL 10 though ). I don't know what they are calling the new career mode, Superstar or whatever it is, but that looks really cool. The similar modes in MLB The Show and NHL are fun, Madden's gets worse every year for some reason. I'd have to buy more XBL points to get the Draft Combine thing so I don't think I can do that right now. For those that bought it is it pretty sweet overall? Is it worth the measly $5?

I'll be buying this game with the (likely) annual TRU buy 2, get 1 free sale in October along with Alpha Protocol and Uncharted 2 so I won't have this day 1, but will have it within the first couple of weeks.
For those that bought it is it pretty sweet overall? Is it worth the measly $5?
I downloaded the trial first and I recommend you do the same so you can essentially you can see what you are buying. Trial mode lets you do scrimmages (basically 5v5 that just let you improve against CPU opponents). It does not save your info and it does not let you build up your draftee.

Full game has: Drills to mildly boost your ratings a few pts (you only get to do it 6 times), Shoot-arounds & scrimmages to practice with your prospect, finally there are 6 "scouted" games you can participate in. After you have completed all the options, you can delete your save and start over or upload it to the 2K server and wait for the game to be released.

Is that thing required though to play that game-mode in the full game though, or is it just a supplemental thing?

With it, you get drafted. Without it, you build your way up in the Summer League/DLeague, then get signed on to teams. Basically it.

Man that skills challenge called post defense is too damn hard. The guy starts dream shaking you all over the damn place and you get a -50 for bad defense. GRRR TOO HARD!

Combine is awesome, sometimes frustrating because of the 40 skill level, but can't wait to put my 3pt specialist in 2k10. Had to get the anniversary edition, haven't gotten a collector's edition in a long time.

What is the highest anyone has gotten? I have 1 game left, 41 OVR 6'4 PG, expected pick Rnd 2 pick 7 w/ Spurs.

Crap, I know this is still the b-ball title to beat, and maybe I've been turning a blind eye as a result, but IMO 2K10 has done a shitty job marketing 10--I didn't even know there was a Draft Combine XBLA game out already. Comparatively, I've seen a number of vids on Live 10.

Oh well, I'll try picking the Combine up soon.

Highest OVR rating I got was 50. I still haven't got to my second character. Raising awareness brings up your rating a lot, but I question how hard it'll be to raise the other stats later so I've seen people raise the more questionable stats (which also unlocks new animations).

They've always sucked at marketing the NBA 2k series. Don't worry though, it has Kobe on the cover. I'm sure they'll get to it. It seems that there's a LOT of promise into 2k10. Read some previews from GamePro and ESPN. They're trying to make it another cornerstone as 2k7 was (or, NFL 2k5).

Thanks. Just a bit frustrating when I want to know what new features and improvements have been made, but just not getting as much info as the competition.

Will NBA 2K10 have enough new features to justify throwing $60 for it. I am just gonna stick with NBA 2K9 with the roster updated or wait a month or two until it drops to $30. EA Sports did steal their lead designer Mike Wang so don't be surprised if Live 10 plays a lot like 2K10 --- I read that they ditched the right analog dribbling moves and implemented something very similar to 2k's dribbling controls. Damn you EA, all they can do is throw money at the problem. First monopolizing the NFL and now stealing NBA 2K's lead designer.

This doesn't correlate to the games great sales in recent years. The 360 version of 2K9 has been in the NPD top 20 overall games sold multiple times since it launched last October. The PS3 version has also made top 20 appearances, although not as many. Live 09 hasn't even come close to sniffing the top 20.

My player is a 45 OVR 6'8 3pt Specialist SF, Rnd 2 Pick 20

Anyone else seeing these people that glitched and have 99's?

I am getting the 10 year anniversary edition with collectible figure, casing, and bonus disc. NBA 2K10 will give Live a good whooping it truly deserves. Gosh I hate EA Sports, please bring back the NFL 2K series.

All I want is that damn locker that holds the games....that shit looks great. All the rest of it is trash. I really wish Kobe wasnt on the cover or I would think more about getting this.

^^Haha, they did that with a pair of Lebron's as well and charged $300. It must be hard to make custom lockers ;)
wish King James was on the cover
Are you referring to Baby James who will never win an NBA title and cry about it every year?

I really like this draft combine. I have the NBA 2k9 and don't plan on buying the 2k10 since I usually do the sports games every 2 yrs. I am about to finish my pg and then move onto the sg and just go down the line and make one for each position. Great fun for $5.

Anyone know what that elite channel with celebrities and players can only join thing is? I am leaning towards getting the anniversary edition since that locker is cool and kobe is my 3rd favorite player of all time (1. Kareem 2. Shaq). Just wondering what that is and if its important in anyway.

Or just meaningless.

Don't think anyone will know till it drops. My guess is that it's just an exclusive lobby. Maybe your name turns gold? I don't think that's going to do much, just like Madden's "Elite" DLC with its exclusive lobby.

i love nba 2k. got the draft combine made a 6'5 SG about a 45 overall. i really cant wait to play "my career" thats a huge step forward for basketball games. i pre ordered the 10th anniversary edition about a month ago. im super excited for this game.

my athletic center is coming along nicely. averaging 23/12/3 blocks.

This might just be my keeper. Havn't done any drills yet. I figured saving my drills (which only net you 1 point for gold) would be better used after I have upped the skills from points.

If I add a point to shots in the post right now, Its only worth 132 SP.
If I add a point to shots in the post after I played my games and upped it with other SP, it will be worth 324.

Seems right to me but maybe its wrong in theory. I don't feel like thinking it through haha
Are you referring to Baby James who will never win an NBA title and cry about it every year?
No. I'm referring to the best player in the NBA who is currently the face of the NBA.

I really want that CE, but I just don't want to buy it on release and it see it on amazon for 50% off a couple months later. >_
Not sure what to think of your msg, seen. lol
Well, I played my 3rd game and played like a beast and am now slated to go round 2 pick 2 by the Wizards; my PG's OVR is 40.
No. I'm referring to the best player in the NBA who is currently the face of the NBA.
Ok, sorry I was thinking of someone else.

Posted some juicy new stuff regarding audio in my original posting; sounds promising (no pun intended).

I really like the Draft Combine a lot, already played through with one guy. Is it just me or are the layups FINALLY fixed in this year's game? Every year before this it seemed like most of the time players would shoot jumpers from either under the basket or from just a foot or two away, usually missing the shot. Now it seems like they will do an actual LAYUP animation almost every single time. So glad that this appears to have been fixed as it was constantly one of my only complaints about the 2K basketball games. Other than that things just seem overall more refined than last year's game, and with the addition of the new career mode(which is insanely fun from what I can tell) this game is shaping up to be awesome.

Hearing this makes me happy. I absolutely hated running up uncontested and having them stop to take a jump shot like right underneath the rim.

Yep. That's Labum James.

I hope the real game fits the sdtv screens better... I can't see any of the damn comments the game makes. IE bad shot selection / tipped pass.

2K9 fit the screen perfectly.

So, I bought that Draft Combine game last night...its awful.

All of the drills are atrocious. The same exact terrible ones as last year.
- Running the dribble course is garbage because its overly hard to control your character, plus he'll get stuck on cones constantly.
- Shooting drills are the most tolerable, but even then, they're bad. Nothing like taking ages to get beyond the three point line. Does the character know this is a timed drill?
- The stealing drill sucks. Because its overly difficult to control your character (IE: they move in directions you aren't even trying to go), you pretty much always leave the guy open.
- Post defense sucks, just like last year. You can jump at the exact same time as the guy you're defending and it'll still say it was poor defense and subtract 10 points.

After the drills you move onto actual 5v5 games. These aren't any better.
- I was constantly told I was making poor shot selection. WRONG. When I'm wide open, have two or three bars on my meter, just because I happen to miss, doesn't make it poor selection. If I were double-teamed and decided to lob one up, that would be poor.
- Getting called for holding the ball too long as a fucking PG. Seriously? I'm trying to set up a play, and what do ya' know, I'm apparently holding the ball too long. Ugh.
- Your team is full of morons. I was down court all alone and the other guy on my team just stands there with the ball, refusing to pass. Then I get negatives for "calling for the ball too often". No shit, I'M WIDE OPEN ALL ALONE!

This shit sucks.

You have plenty of time in the drills to get gold, my players speed is terrible but i got a ridiculous amount of pts, just take your time. The Dribbling drill is easily done if you just move the stick to the right and left. Just get used to it the first game i had a C+ rating, the last 5 I had an A+. The team is rated what you are so it's probably supposed to be a little frustrating.

What is your character's full name? I read something like this on the 2k forums so it has something to do with the name.
