FYE Price Scanner Question - Was I Gipped?

Hey guys, got an FYE question I was looking for help with... please bear with the exposition:

So I went to FYE today to pick up an Ipod Boombox that was on sale for $40. I noticed they also had a new copy of Everquest Adventures for PS2, the yellow sticker said it was $0.01 but there was also a sticker that said $9.99. I used one of those price scanners to check the price and it showed as $0.01, so I figured "you cant beat that price, even if you just use it as a replacement case" and added it to the pile. When I went to the register, the guy rang it up at $9.99... I told him the price sticker said $0.01 and it also rang up for that amount to which he replied "oh that's gotta be a mistake". Another employee who was nearby said "no you gotta give it to him for that price since that's what the sticker said", which seemed to upset him a little. I tried to explain to him that it was probably that price because the game is obselete(I'm assuming they probably shut the EQ servers down a long time ago?) but he ignored my comment and said something about how it was probably a trade-in value error, even though it was a new game. Anyways he gets to scanning the boombox, and I noticed that it rang up for $29.99 instead of $39.99, but then he tapped on his keyboard and brought the price back up to $40.00. I pointed this out to him and he replied by saying "Yeah but we gotta go by the sticker price".

Ultimately, my question is this: does the scanner price have the ultimate say, or are they allowed to change the price based on the stickers? I can't help but feel that the clerk changed it because he was mad(for some reason...) that I got a $0.01 game, but I'd like to know first before I go and raise hell. The FYE is far enough away that it almost doesn't make the return trip worth the $10, but right now it's really just a matter of principal. Thanks for any advice!

PS: On a non-gaming note.. anyone know if those fold-up beer pong tables FYE sells have gone down in price?

I work at a retail store and when something rings up higher than the price should be we give it to them for the stickered price (or free). If something is stickered for 20 and it rings up 10 then they get it for 10. I don't think they can raise the price if it is the right item no matter what the sticker says

*Facepalm* Both of them are idiots... If their store works like the store I work at, the "yellow sticker" is a mail-in rebate sticker. Whenever they ring an item up like they're supposed to, the computer will print out a couple extra receipts so you can take advantage of the rebate price, and, in your case, the game would be 1 cent after the rebate.

To answer your other question, no, the scanned price isn't the final price. If the cashier/manager thinks there's an error in the system, they're allowed to change it at the manager's discretion, IIRC. But as far as being allowed to change it just because of a sticker... Like I said, it's manager's discretion. If cashiers HAD to manually change prices because of stickers all the time, don't you think people would go take the stickers off the bargain bin items and place them on box sets or other, more expensive items? >_>;

So... Basically, the cashier saved you a mail-in rebate, minus a cent for ringing up the game for one cent, and jacking the price of the boombox up $10. And after having to pay mailing costs, it saved you money. So no, you didn't get jipped- you got a better deal than most of us. XD

As for the beer pong tables... I don't know about them. From what I've seen, we only have inflatable ones, and they haven't dropped in price... But hey, why do you need a specific table for beer pong? If you can just find a regular fold out table, some plastic cups, and beer pong materials, what's keeping you from using those? XP

Hey thanks for the replies.

As for whether or not it was a MIR, this yellow sticker wasn't a rebate sticker, it was the standard price sticker. I'm almost completely certain it wasn't an MIR, when I've scanned a game that DOES have an MIR, it shows as the regular price(for example, my Halo 3 game was $10 after rebate, but it still scanned at $30.00). Regardless, I guess it sounds like they have the right to change the price as they see fit... kinda sucks.

As for the pong table.. the one closest to me has those whacky inflatable things, but the one further away(where this incident happened) has these fold out tables. I'm only really interested because it's thinner than a standard fold-out table(a real boon for my cramped apartment), but they're pretty ridiculoulsly priced so I was hoping to snag one if they dropped significantly.

Last time I bought a game at fye the sticker said 29.99, when rung up it showed up as 9.99. They gave it to me for 9.99.

Everquest was $0.01 earlier in the year, strange it would scan for $0.01 at the scanner but $9.99 at the register (and to make it more strange, the 2 copies I bought for $0.01 each earlier this year were tagged $9.99)

Both of the copies I bought of EQ for PS2 were clearly marked and came up as .01 when I got them at two seperate FYE stores in two seperate areas.

The clerks were kind of annoyed, but they let me have them both times, since there was no other sticker/price to try and enter.

I am pretty sure some states have laws against marking up a price, if something rings up as a price lower than the sticker price, then they have to sell it to you for that price. You may want to check if that is a law in your state.

I have never had a store around here "mark up" a price, as I am pretty sure that is illegal in NY state, when I was a cashier at Kmart we did not mark up prices either and didn't think twice about giving the price that came up in the system.

There might be an exception for items that ring up 0.01 as they are pennied out and that usually means that the item should be sent back to the manufacturer, but if its on the floor marked with 0.01 then IMO, I think they should sell it to you for that price.

Sometimes the scanner on the floor can be different than the register scanner, so I would say the register scanner has the final say, if it was stickered as 39.99 and came up 29.99 at the register then they should give it to you for 29.99 and not mark it up.

Is it weird that when I just googled a question about FYE price scanners, I was not only directed to a CAG thread, but a thread with a question that I asked over six years ago?

Never got that beer pong table, BTW

What did you do to get banned?
I wish it was something cool, but I actually asked them to delete my account; I was spending too much time on the site, and wanted to put an end to it. Of course, two years later I went and created another account anyway. You know what they say: once you go CAG, you never go... bag?
