I didn't pay $16 so I could play Uncharted 2 for 5 minutes (cont.)

Let me first apologize for having to make this thread and for doing it so late. I was planning on making a post in the previous thread on this matter but Shrike closed it before I could. I PMed him to see if he could reopen it but I never got a response. So, I decided to finish up my post anyway and make this thread. This isn't as relevant anymore but I hope to still clear up some of the misconceptions from the last thread and maybe encourage people to think twice before shelling out any amount of money to go to a Sony event.
A key part of the story is missing here: Saticoy walked away with a full, retail copy of Uncharted 2.

I'm sorry about the lack of food, saticoy, but I hope that this in some way went towards making up for that.

Jeff
So I guess since Saticoy got a copy it makes up for the 65 other people who didn’t get one, myself included? Y’know, the ones who were yelling “Where’s the food?” and “Where’s the rest of the raffle?” Yeah, that’s rational. Tell ya what, if you send me a free copy of Uncharted 2 I’ll reconsider the chargeback I’m filing with my credit card for the event along with a complaint letter sent to all the marketing, PR, and other execs at Sony.** I suggest that every other person disappointed with the event do the same.

**For those of you confused by this passage, please first look up the definition of facetious. Also, please understand that I'm trying to make a point, not ask for free stuff.

Let me try and make this as coherent and brief as I can, I’ll start from the beginning-

As I said, I read the rave review given by Darknessbear the night before the OCT 6 event, including the mention that everyone got a free copy of the game. I hadn’t heard of these events before so I Google searched “uncharted events” and was brought to this page:

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/09/play-uncharted-2-among-thieves-on-the-big-screen/

The first thing I noticed was the update on the top of the page which said:

UPDATE: All VIP tickets are gone for the October 5 events. But you can still purchase tickets for the October 6 events! Click on the links for each of the cities below to purchase tickets, or contact the theaters directly to secure a spot.
I then read on to this part:

The date is Monday, October 5, 2009. We’ll have food, an on-site tournament for a chance to compete for prizes, and the opportunity to meet the talented team from Naughty Dog. And best of all, a giant theater screen to see (and a chance to play) UNCHARTED 2 in big-screen glory. This is a very special event, and space is limited … And if you can’t make this October 5th event, contact these same theaters for the Tuesday, October 6th UNCHARTED 2 event. Tickets might still be available!

At this point, as far as I knew, there were two, identical, Uncharted events happening at a movie theater near me and I still had a chance to buy one. This was enough info to convince me, especially with the possibility of scoring a free copy of the game. The only other page I read before purchasing my tickets was this one:

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009...ally-goes-gold-plus-sneak-peek-cinema-events/

If you can’t wait until October 13th, SCEA and Sony Electronics have partnered to produce four exclusive “sneak peek” events that bring UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves to the big screen before launch. At these VIP events, attendees will join Naughty Dog in a night of food, fun and Multiplayer tournaments with the chance to win lots of cool prizes—including the Fortune Hunter Edition. Attendees will also have the chance to play UNCHARTED 2 on the ultimate high definition big screen, powered by Sony Electronics 4K digital cinema technology, which provides image resolution four times greater than any high-definition consumer television out there. Sony Electronics is working with major theaters across the country to create “digital destinations”, pairing 4K digital cinema technology with enhanced services and amenities, such as food, sporting events and music, to create an unprecented entertainment experience. UNCHARTED 2 will be one of the first pre-released games showcased at select sites.
The “sneak peek” events will take place on 10/5 and 10/6 at the theaters below. Stay tuned for more information from Jeff and Chris on how you can win a guaranteed spot. In the meantime, click here for more information.

Both of these pages clearly state that food will be served at both events. The first page had no indication that there was a difference between the two events, and since I didn’t click on the link that did explain the VIP/General audience disparity I was in the dark. Still, food was promised regardless.

I called the movie theater the next morning to order my ticket (despite what the blog said, you could not order online). I figured, even if I didn’t get a free copy of the game, I’d still have the chance to chill, get some food (it was a planned 5 hour event), compete in the tourney, and check out some Uncharted. So, I made the 45 minute trek to Thousand Oaks to attend.

Got there and once everyone was seated, we were greeted by the unsurprisingly enthusiastic emcee. One of the first things he told us was that there would be a raffle for 20 copies of Uncharted 2 and a PS3 Slim. That pretty much confirmed not everyone was getting a copy, but with 80 people in the tourney, it left a 1 in 4 chance of getting the game.

As he began to talk about the tournament, he continued bringing us good news; he announced that the runners-up from last night’s tournament were here again to try and win. People around me groaned, “Are you fucking kidding me?” I thought to myself. In case you missed that, the team of 5 that already played in the tournament, the team that came in second place, the team who already got copies of the game last night -- were in tonight’s competition. Now I can’t fault these guys, they paid their $16 to get back in, but as far as being on a competitive playing field goes, everyone else there was immediately at a handicap. Which brings up another point about teams, I had thought (and read) that players were to be placed in teams at the event, which you were, unless you already had a team coming in. So if you didn’t have a set team, you were finished before it started; all the top placers had at least 3 players that knew each other beforehand.

On to the tournament, remember that ‘chance to play Uncharted on the big screen’? Well, that really wasn’t true. The only people that were playing on the theater screen were the team captains from one team only. And they weren’t actually playing on the big screen, they were playing on a tiny 27” monitor while the game was displayed above them. So nobody got to actually play on the theater screen. I mean, it’s not like the PS3 has wireless controllers or anything.

Now, before you were to play in the first round of the tournament, your team would be called down to the front rows 2 matches ahead of time. Due to some error, out team wasn’t called down until 5 seconds before our game started. So I had no idea who was on my team and what they wanted to do before the match started. The problems go on from there. You couldn’t use boosters and you couldn’t change the controls. “Hey! You like to play with inverted controls? Well fuck you.” The controller itself felt worn out, like it had been used at every trade show in the past 5 years. All the games were 5 minute deathmatch rounds on new maps, which is sort of understandable due to time constraints, but it left little time to get into any sort of rhythm during the game; especially if you don’t know the maps ahead of time(unless you had the game the day before!). As with the captains, we all played on small screens. Unfortunately, your head was forced to be within two feet of the screen because the cord on the controller had no give. The TVs also had that god-awful Motion plus technology turned on, which created lag between the controller and the display and made the game really hard to look at, very jittery and like it was dropping frames. This effect is amplified when you’re standing two fucking feet away from the screen. As a bonus, there was no sound except from the action on the main screen, which was hilariously disorienting.

Our team lost, but it didn’t really matter as you can guess who won – the team from the night before. By my count, 5 of them got copies of the game the night before, they also got signed copies of Uncharted: DF for placing 2nd, and they got the five Fortune Hunter versions. And here’s the kicker, two of them won raffle copies of Uncharted 2 from the pot.

Aside from the tournament, the rest of the show was a disappointment also. As was mentioned by others, there was no food or refreshments, not even water. Let me remind you that this was a planned 5 hour event. As you read just above, food and refreshments were promised in multiple pages advertising the event.

In between the tournament rounds, the co-lead designer would talk to us about the game, show us some clips from the single-player, and then they would hold a portion of the raffle. It was basically a big advertisement there and everywhere else. I lost count on how many times the emcee asked us to ‘give it up for Sony’ or ‘Let’s hear it for Playstation.’ They acted as if they were doing us a big, gigantic favor by letting us pay to sit in a movie theater and preview a game that’s coming out in a week (he called it an historic event). Furthermore, the never-before-seen footage of four single player levels was a farce seeing as two of the scenes had been on the internet for over a month. Every time they would raffle off a copy of the game they would remind us that this is for a game that is not available in retail stores yet and the winner would get to play it before everyone else. Uh, no shit? Do you think I’d even be at this event if the game had come out a week ago? They went even further, saying that winners would be getting a copy before the people at Naughty Dog would. MY ASS. That’s like telling my girlfriend that she’s getting to play with my junk before anyone else ever, including myself. Sony – I understand that you’re trying to sell your product but please don’t try and sugarcoat the bullshit.

Throughout the entire evening there was a small group of obnoxious douchebags randomly yelling obscenities and comments at the top of their lungs. These are the type of people who have to be really loud to get attention because daddy either beat them or left them when they were younger. It wasn’t a problem at first, most people laughed (nervously) and tried to ignore them. But it didn’t take much time for people to get sick of it. No one managing the event bothered to tell them to stop; it wasn’t until one woman told them to ‘shut the fuck up’ that emcee mentioned that everyone should keep it under control. Here’s the other kicker, two of them won copies of the game from the raffle.

Rounding out the substandard night was the blunder of a raffle. Like I said, we were told they would be raffling 20 copies at the beginning of the show and by the end they had only raffled 15. I asked someone with Naughty Dog right at the end of the show and he either didn’t care or didn’t know and told me to find some lady with a binder outside of the theater. So I found her and asked why there were only 15 copies raffled and her answer really drove home the theme of failure from the whole night. She told me that there was a mistake and she counted 20 copies based on the amount of breaks she thought there would be in between each tournament round (when they held the raffles) Soooooo, instead of counting how many copies of the game she actually had, she instead decided to count how many raffles she thought there would be and then multiply that by 5. At this point 80% of my brain had already melted so I decided to fuck off with whatever was left and just walked away.

I think the most dismaying part of this whole experience has been the response from Sony/ND, both at the event and in the last thread. The best they can seem to muster is an ‘uh, yeah, sorry about that’ while they go on their way. They seem to not care or understand that most of us made time for this event and went out of our way to get there; we also paid money to get in. To put on such a show and then not recognize that mistakes were made and at least be legitimately sympathetic about it is inexcusable. I may have not been so bitter had I payed only $5 for the mediocre tournament, but $16 for a 5 hour advertisement? No thanks. I’m still excited for Uncharted 2, but I will never attend a Sony-sponsored event again and I will encourage everyone I know to do the same.

I actually read the whole thing and it seems to corroborate (Fake?) saticoy's experience. Get ready for all the negative responses from saticoy's thread directed towards you, though.

I don't know exactly why the other thread was closed... it was like "JEFF FROM SONY POSTED HERE THREAD CLOSE" which is totally legit. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if they decide to close this one, too.

Eh, Saticoy had no right to bitch. He got three(?) copies of the game.

That definitely sucks that you had to dish out $16 bucks for nothing (I'm not sure why they charged) seems really messed up. I hope you can get resolve from this mess, and if Sony ever gets in contact with me I'll ask them what is up.

But - Sony is cheap (they still haven't paid for my gas/parking) so I'm guessing they wont be of any help. Try asking Naughty Dog.

Are you kidding me? Those guys got to come back and compete? My team made it to the last three and we lost to them barely (cheap ass grenades man...) - but they won signed copies of Uncharted 1. That is so not fair, they had some prior experience on the new maps and they were familiar with their team AND they already won something.

Bah... You deserve to be pissed off. It just astounds me that they went an entire 180 from the night before. They should have just canceled the second day - it is obvious they just pulled out all the stops for the media/vip event.

Why do other people keep changing his story for him?

oh, poor, poor, princess. you're going to have the experience at the event you did and come in and try to have a pity party for yourself because your GAS wasn't paid for? Let alone considering all the other free Sony swag you've scored over months? Come on into the real world, dude.

Fight the good fight, Ugamer_X. Just because Jeff Rubenstein said saticoy got a free copy of the game, that doesn't negate accusations of false advertising and all around poor planning/execution. Nobody ever pressed Rubenstein on that, they were too busy fawning over a fucking internet blogger posting at CAG, like it's a fucking shocker that someone whose paychecks come from posting things on the internet came and posted something on the internet.

:hot:
Time to go sleepy myke. I wasn't asking for a pity party, I was just saying that Sony can be real cheap at times and when it comes to paying money owed they become a bit finicky. And those I've talked with say the same thing.

I think you read what I said wrong.

As I said in the last one, stop trying to complain till they give you free stuff. If you paid $16 and had a 20% chance at winning the game for free (before launch no less) you got your money's worth.

Dude, honestly leave this alone, the old thread was closed because it had gone off the rails, and I fear the same will happen here.

They acted as if they were doing us a big, gigantic favor by letting us pay to sit in a movie theater and preview a game that’s coming out in a week (he called it an historic event).

The fact that this game is basically being billed as the gaming equivalent of the second coming of Jesus Christ himself is what allows Sony to have this attitude.

I am sorry OP that you had such a negative experience but this looks like nothing more than you wanting to bitch to get a free copy of the game. You are already in the process of doing a chargeback (which depending on what CC you have should be rather easy). Since 1 member (or friend of a member) got a copy of the game means that you will try too (especially this far after the actual event)

My problem with this whole thing is that if you won a copy of the game then you would not be bitching and would say it was a great event (you can try to deny it but $16 for Uncharted 2 before release = unbitchable event). Your post would have been "I won a copy of Uncharted 2" not "I didn't pay $16 so I could play Uncharted for 5 minutes". You payed for a viewing of an unreleased game, some gametime and a chance to get a free copy. The lack of food situation is BS on sonys part but again if you won a copy you would not be complaining.

It sucks that the runner-ups came back and played again but can you blame them. They paid for tickets like everyone else. Nothing wrong with that. Sony should not have acknowledged them as being there because that puts a bad taste in everyones mouth but they did nothing wrong. They got 2nd yesterday, why not try again?

In the end I hope that you do get your money back from the event since it did not deliver for you as advertised.

i pay $6 to the md lottery every week, they dont give me free food and I never win. Should I start bitching at them as well??
.
But - Sony is cheap
Well, third place will do that to a company.

My guess is Sorny went for the lowest bid, and the PR company kept the $ for refreshments(and a couple of UC2 copies) for themselves.

some people... sigh, so anal... it's so pestilent... just apply common sense logic to the ticket price and you get the picture. $16?!?! What do you expect, a full course meal and awesome freebies?
the PR company kept the $ for refreshments(and a couple of UC2 copies) for themselves.
I can't get the image out of my head of three dudes looking worried and suspicious while cramming two-liters of "Pepsi Max" into the trunk of their Toyota Corolla.
i pay $6 to the md lottery every week, they dont give me free food and I never win. Should I start bitching at them as well??
That's a bit of an exaggeration, isn't it?

But okay, if the MD lottery advertised free food every week, then by all means, start bitching.
some people... sigh, so anal... it's so pestilent... just apply common sense logic to the ticket price and you get the picture. $16?!?! What do you expect, a full course meal and awesome freebies?
Snacks and refreshments like the event promised? It was 5 hours long.

I know Ugamer, he isn't upset that he didn't win a copy of the game. He's upset that he had to drive 45 minutes out of his way to an event that lasted 5 hours that Sony didn't deliver on.

I hate this shit. People defend Sony for charging somebody for something and not giving it to them? This is a fucking billion dollar company, why the hell are you defending them? It's not like they couldn't fucking afford it.

If I was buying Uncharted from Sony (directly, for this example...), and they shipped it to me for $60, but I only had $32 in my account when they went to collect, do you think that they would accept that shit? fuck no. And nobody here would be defending the asshole that tried to get away with it.

"Yeah, well I said I was going to give them $60 in money, and I gave them $32, but I still gave them money, so that's what's important, even if I didn't give them all of it." "Oh yeah, I totally understand, Sony should just be glad you gave them any money at all, what were they expecting? A million dollars? It's just a video game, jesus, they should be happy with their $32."

Crazy fucking shit.

You should bitch and spread it around. They fucked up and people should call them on it, not make up excuses. It might keep their future events from being so shitty.

(Yes, I like the word fuck, and CAG is where I find out how often I really use it. Thank you shaq-fu.)

Oh man, you cats really don't get it. The reason for my comment about the game was to make a point about what Rubenstein said, not to actually get a copy of the game. Maybe you missed this part:

The whole point of this wall of text was to call Sony out for their poorly executed show and not delivering on their promises. This had nothing to do with getting free swag.
All Jersey/NYC CAGs are invited to my place later for cookies, fruit punch, and you can play UC2 for 20+ minutes. GET IT!
Sweet jesus!

Man, you used a lot of text to say "the Uncharted 2 preview event sucked. If I knew then what I know now, I would not have gone." Still, you mentioned a lot of times that the event did not meet your expectations, but never actually address what your expectations were...if there was pizza and pepsi there, would you still be filing a chargeback? How many copies of Uncharted 2 did you think were going to be raffled off when you bought your ticket?

Sure, there was some BS in there...I'd be quite angry if a team of guys came back from the previous night to play...but as you said, they paid their money to come back. They found a loophole in the system and exploited it. Who among us can honestly say they wouldn't do the same thing had they thought of it, given the haul they walked off with?

As NJMane said, this just seems like a "give me a free copy of U2" thread. One of your first thoughts basically says "Give me a free copy and I'll consider not slandering your event and asking for a refund". Your $16 got you into a pre-screening event and gave you the chance to win prizes including a copy of the game. You also got to compete in a tournament. I see no problem with how the tournament worked, as if you wanted or expected people to be matched up entirely at random, you could have just as easily been teamed up with players that had no clue what they were doing, thus giving you a first round exit anyway.

As for the food, forgive me if I passed it over in your links, but I see no mention of free food. All I see is mention of food. I seem to recall reading in the other thread that food was available, but you had to buy it. While it's unfortunate that you assumed the food would be free, it seems that food was available, so I don't view that as false advertising. The raffle only having 15 copies instead of 20 seems like an honest mistake. Unless the promotional material said there would be 20 copies before you got to the event (none of the links I read said it, but again I could have just missed it), then they could have given away as few as 2 and had been correct with them saying multiple copies would be given away.

Based on what I've read between the two threads, I feel the event was acceptably done, though it could have used some streamlining and better management/communication. If all you were doing was merely giving suggestions on how they could better handle future gatherings like this, that would be fine. Asking for a refund and saying it was basically a garbage event seems entirely unfair.
They found a loophole in the system and exploited it. Who among us can honestly say they wouldn't do the same thing had they thought of it, given the haul they walked off with?
Exactly. How many threads in the Deals section of this very site end up being ways to exploit glitches in websites or point-of-services computers? Stacking ECA codes. Handing games over in a certain order so that you get the most expensive one free in a sale. Adding certain items to your online cart so a discount works dramatically in your favor.

Twice in one week, damn:

see now reading this i can see how fucked up the experience was the other guys story didnt have anywhere near this much detail. why the hell they would let people keep coming back and winning shit is beyond me and if these contests were like this i can only imagine how shitty the supposed online contest will be.

This guy was eerily right.

I guess I should just take it in the ass when I pay for something that isn't delivered as promised?

I'll write up a bullet-point summary for the morons who don't understand the concept of paying for one thing and getting something else in return. But now, I'm off to go play Uncharted (Har har I wantz free ghamez so I made this thread).

I read on numerous other sites ( ign, joystiq, kataku) that people were "invited" to these events. I was a little shocked to hear you were charged. All reports I saw people were ALL given free copies. Try googling IGN uncharted 2 free event. There will be something that shows or talks about the events.

Holy shit. I actually AGREE with you for once. Hopefully, I won't make a habit of this.

Anyway, I just wanna know one thing:

The date is Monday, October 5, 2009. We’ll have food, an on-site tournament for a chance to compete for prizes, and the opportunity to meet the talented team from Naughty Dog. And best of all, a giant theater screen to see (and a chance to play) UNCHARTED 2 in big-screen glory. This is a very special event, and space is limited … And if you can’t make this October 5th event, contact these same theaters for the Tuesday, October 6th UNCHARTED 2 event. Tickets might still be available!

Where pretell in the above quote does it say that the Tuesday event will be the EXACT same as the Monday one and where do they promise food in that quote explicitly for the Tuesday event?

It seems to me that the OP(and the OP of the other thread and their friends) ASSumed that the Tuesday event would be EXACTLY the same as the VIP event on Monday.

So, the OP and the OP of the other thread only have themselves to blame for doing so.

This is Sony. They released a no UMD PSP in which you buy game licenses which they can yank from you at any time. You think they give a god damn about their customers?

Why is piracy so bad, anyway? Game companies can screw their customers over on a daily basis, but if we do it back, it's evil.

If people read the whole post and looked at the Sony blog, they would've seen the promise of food. If it really was a five hour event, damn there should have been something. Yes, even though Jeff said Saticoy got a free copy of the game, he didn't deny the event didn't deliver as billed.
This is Sony. They released a no UMD PSP in which you buy game licenses which they can yank from you at any time. You think they give a god damn about their customers?

With how often you talk about piracy, I'm shocked you haven't been banned as of yet.

Mind you, I hate some of these companies that seem to fuck over their customers a bunch, but I'd rather just buy their games used or on clearance and give the store(s) my money rather than just doing something outright illegal.

In terms of the OP's complaint though, no food seemed to be little more than an opening he could exploit in order to do a chargeback. The event itself seemed to have a lot worse flaws than that. Like I asked before, if the event did have food, would the OP have been perfectly content with the event? Would he still be issuing a chargeback?

Damn... now I agree with you.

Yup.

Well I didn't pay $60 so I could play Uncharted 2 for 20 minutes.

I had to go somewhere so I had to quit playing

Who do I e-mail to complain about this?
