DON'T get that DVD/Blu-ray/CD yet, it's going to have a BETTER version soon thread

SuperJedi

CAGiversary!
Not sure if there is a thread like this already, but I DO think it's important we have a thread here for this purpose, so we all don't get double-dipped because we are not aware of another version coming out.

So, what titles are going to get a new versions?

Do you guys think that Braveheart & Gladiator will receive re-releases? I mean, they are marketed as the Saphire Series which is supposed to be their top of the line series; but I keep reading terrible reviews on these.

Not sure where you heard terrible Braveheart review, but Gladiator was pretty bad

I skipped the Star Trek ones this time around, they will probably get versions that match the SD ones at some point.

I like the idea of this thread (good work, OP)...but I did succumb in a few cases.

There's no doubt some of the most popular movies will always get updated releases, hell almost every year it seems in some cases, but some of these prices are just fantastic!

I bit on QoS, Gladiator, and Braveheart, LOL. But as for the topic, I believe many of the Blu Ray doorbusters/super specials aren't "ideal" cuts or missing something, and apparently some are getting updated versions released very shortly (while some may already have a superior version available).

I believe Goodfellas and Wizard of Oz are two examples.

Lord of the Rings on Blu-ray. Wait for the eventual/inevitable release of the extended cut.

I can't see them going back and fixing Gladiator unless there was more money to be made or another anniversary edition.

The two disc re-releases like Casino Royale don't interest me. I don't have enough time to watch all the extras.
That's a waste of freaking money. $14.99 is good enough for me.
Unless it is $11.50 at walmart.com

Harry Potter has $35 Ultimate editions coming out. But I don't really need hours and hours of extras, so I'll grab the regular blu-rays for $10 each.

Same. I care nothing for BTS and deleted scenes of HP. I'll keep my R2B copies.

I couldn't agree more with all those points. I'm waiting on the extended cuts of Lord of the Rings, picking up Gladiator at $10, and passing on the new Bond films.

Gladiator is a terrible transfer.

I've been made well aware. But I sold my DVD months ago when they announced the BD version. At this point I just want the movie again, and for $10 I can live with it.

That's understandable.

I agree completely! If a movie has just come out, and I can get a great deal on it, I try not to worry about the newer edition that may come out later. Especially seeing as a lot of times the newer version just has a bunch of junk I can honestly do without or watch over the period of a Netflix rental. As someone else pointed out, the one exception is definitely Lord of the Rings. I will wait for the extended cuts.

Watchmen was a good example of this, though it might make sense to own both movies.

The BR release was the extended cut. The UE BR version had Tales Of The Black Freighter woven into the storyline. Some people complained about adding 30+ minutes to the length of a 3 hour movie, and some people not familiar with the comic wouldn't know what to do with them.

LOTR of course is the prime example of this waiting for the "later" version.

QoS might get a double-dip, though Casino Royale's double dip was vaguely worth it. As my non CE verson of CR was a freebie from a B2G2 sale, I didn't mind double-dipping.

Cars' double dip, which was just an audio upgrade, not really worth it.

Some movies, I don't mind the occasional double-dip, as long as I'm not out that much money for the "first" release.

Monsters vs. Aliens might be one that double-dips, and that would be to add the 3D version to it. May not happen, though you never know.

Like most, I have double dipped on some films; although only a few. Reservoir Dogs is one that I double dipped on DVD; the first time was with each DVD having a different character on the cover, I think I have the Mr. Brown edition. Then I got the version that's shaped like a gas can a couple of years back; I PMed Circuit City at BB so it was pretty cheap.

Enter the Dragon is another one. I have the Collector's Edition on DVD and bought the BD when it came out. Now, Casino Royale is one I am guilty of triple dipping on. I bought the DVD when it came out; then got the BD for free when I bought my PS3 and then bought the 2 disc BD when it dropped to $14. I don't mind doing it for that film because I truly loved the film/JB series. If QoS gets another release, chances are I will buy it.

I don't double-dip unless the video quality of the new version of a movie I really, really like is substantially better than the version I already own. If a new version has better extras, I just get it from Netflix since I'll probably only watch the extras once.

I have gladiator on dvd and bit on Gladiator for Bluray for 10$...I figure even if there is a better transfer down the road, the video and audio still looks and sounds better than what was on my dvd version...
I hate the new cheap releases of the star trek movies. They seem to have next to no extras. The two disc versions that came out a few years back were the best IMO.
Especially for Wrath Of Khan which has the extended cut. :D
Goodfellas 20th Anniversary Edition is coming out early next year....
 I might actually buy this. My favorite movie of all time doesn't deserve to be pirated.
Gladiator is a terrible transfer.
It pales in comparison to the Braveheart Blu-ray. But it isn't as atrocious as people make it out to be. I have it projected 120" with a projector and it is still much better then the DVD. Also, at $10 it is worth a look.

I initially had my doubts due to all the negative reviews online. Also, I even slow mo-ed the first battle to try and find the disappearing arrows. It wasn't in your fact noticible.

Watchmen Ultimate shouldn't call itself the Ultimate edition. It is missing the theatrical and directors extended cut. They should have ditched the digital copy theatrical cut most will probably never use and put those two version.

I've never had any interest in seeing The Black Freighter put back into Watchmen. I really don't see how it would work without killing the pacing. Yes, I read the graphic novel, and it worked ok there - but print is an entirely different beast from film. I'm perfectly content w/ the first blu-ray release.

guess i'm the only one that plans to buy both the theatrical and extended edition blu-rays of LOTR... at which point I'll have 4 versions of each movie, lulz

i dunno, sometimes I prefer the theatrical versions to the EEs simply in the interest of time...

Great idea for a thread. As a suggestion, when we get solid info - like for the Goodfellas Anniversary Edition - maybe the OP can put it at the head of the thread for ease of use?

Anyway, just to pass on a common suspicion, lots of people have feared that due to the barebones BD of Drag Me to Hell, there may be a double dip in the future. That's the only thing stopping me from getting it, since I've heard the SQ is amazing.

also...for those who are going to double dip on watchmen (or those who have gotten double penetrated by warner bros), dont forget, you could have signed up for something online and received a 10 dollars off coupon for the ultimate, which brings amazons price down to $20, a worthy price to double dip for this ultimate edition.
Let the Right One in Blu-Ray still isn't out in the wild with theatrical English subtitles (I'm still holding out for the US version with lossless sound), although I have seen the DVD with theatrical subtitles in Target several times. fucking Magnet.

Fourthed on holding out for the inevitable LOTR extended release Blu-Rays because the theatrical editions suck. Come on, New Line. We're not that stupid - but apparently they are.
The company that released Let the Right One in pretty much said that they won't fix the subtitles. Doesn't do anything for their PR department.

Reminding myself that I could possibly get $10. I decided to create my own ultimate editio and also get the directors cut during black friday.

Said coupon, which has yet to materialize, is only for WBShop.com .

They've fixed the subtitles for future runs, but they are waiting for their warehouse stock to sell first before releasing the fixed version. Which, of course, will probably be never. :bomb:

Ugh on LTROI. Been waiting for a fix on the BD subtitles myself.

On the SPECULATION front, Korean film fans may want to hold back on grabbing Tartan's new Vengeance collection with Park Chan-Wook's revenge trilogy. They've released BD's before and considering that his films are at the forefront of the foreign film community, I wouldn't be surprised if they released it on BD later.
So is Harry Potter Half-Blood Prince going to have a better version soon?

Announced?
Seeing how they just released the "Ultimate Edition" of the first 2 movies it is only going to be a matter of time
Seeing how they just released the "Ultimate Edition" of the first 2 movies it is only going to be a matter of time
By the time they get around to releasing an Ultimate Edition of year 6, they'll have finished all the movies and released the full collector's set with all 8 movies in one box.

Honestly, that's what I'm holding out for. You know it's going to happen.

So, it has so far not yet confirmed right?

I mean if not I am just going to open this new one I bought just for $15... and if it's not yet announced, it's hard to say when a NEW edition will even come out. In 2 years?

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/2712/harrypotter_sorcerers_ultimate.html

There's a eight-part documentary that starts in Sorceror's Stone with Part 1 on the UE of that title.

I think you can figure out the rest.

For those interested, the Park Chan-Wook's Vengeance trilogy will indeed be out on BD in March 2010. I'll find a link later but this info was apparently sent by Tartan in their newsletter; they held off on the release of the DVD Box Set to coincide with the BD one. How considerate!

I can only hope for a better version of Ronin on BR. I heard the visual quality is terrible! =(

I am still holding out on LTROI also....that was a real crappy situation. Lets all pray for an Amazon clear out sale!
