Hey all

I skipped out on both of these games since I have a little one (and limited gaming time), but now that he's almost 2 (and we likely have another one on the way....), I'm looking to get some quality gaming time in the next 8.5 months or so.

I have a PS3. Which game should I get/did you have more fun with/was less buggy/etc?

Thanks in advance!

Infamous is a little bit repetitive but still lots of fun. Prototype is even more so repetitive but with an added dash of overly frustrating difficult that suddenly ramps up out of nowhere. Like "go here fight through approximately 1,000 enemies and do something while the respawns keep trying to kill you" difficult. I just plain got bored and pissed at Prototype.

Hey there Frank.

Infamous was awesome! I have Prototype in my backlog right now so I can't really comment on that game but Infamous is an excellent game. I highly reccomend it.

Both are repetitive - inFamous especially. Character control seems a bit better in inFamous (he moves like spiderman) than in Prototype. I did like the powers in both games - Protype with the running up the walls of buildings, gliding around the city, and absorbing and morphing into other people. Induction grind in inFamous is my all time fav. Worst thing for me in Prototype - I got to one boss battle that was just crazy(walkthroughs online were saying expect to spend an hour on it). I gave up after that. Just started playing inFamous recently so I have no idea how close to the end I am. Overall, both are alright - and if you have to get one, inFamous is better.

I didn't like inFamous at all. Definitely try the demo first. inFamous is like most modern games: its focus is on presentation, while gameplay is put on the back burner and seemingly forgot about by the developers. It's pretty obvious the designers didn't spend much time thinking "what would be fun to play?" instead, they seemed to focus on "what would be cool to happen in a game?"... Controls are kinda stiff, but not terrible. I didn't enjoy it.

Prototype is more like games used to be -- arcade-style, story doesn't matter at all, gameplay is great. It's obvious the designers set out to make a game that is fun to play, regardless of it not making sense or anything like that. Controls are intuitive and responsive. If you liked Hulk Ultimate Destruction you'll love Prototype. It's definitely one of my favorite 2009 games, if not my favorite. Players that didn't enjoy it all seem to have played it as some sort of story-based game... if you play it, think of the missions solely as a way to get points to buy upgrades. Don't think of it as a linear game that you should try to beat. It's just an arcade-style game that you play, missions are all 100% optional, even the main story missions.

In the end, I think it all boils down to whether you want a story-based game to play from start to finish, or an arcade-style game to pick up and play however you want. inFamous is more like a do-the-missions type of game, Prototype is more like a play-around-sandbox-mode type of game.

infamous has better graphics, a better story, better controls and is slightly less repetitive. prototype, while having cool powers just isnt as fun as youd think it would be. its mindless running around and killing stuff. gets very boring.

Prototype isn't a bad game, but put against infamous it's deficiencies become blatently apparent.

Infamous was a GOTY contender for me last year. Very satisfying experience.

Get it!

have you already played everything else? :) I've only played Prototype for a minute, but i'd have to say that infamous seems like the better game. I got my platinum on infamous, and while I enjoyed the game itself, I didn't care for the characters at all, or the story. The missions weren't as repetative as say... Assassin's Creed, but it's still a valid complaint.

I know you specifically asked about these 2 titles, but I just looked at your trophy card-- Have you looked into Assassin's Creed 2?

I agree with this sentiment.

Infamous is much better. I have both and looking at just still screen shots, I thought I would like Prototype better....but after playing both, if you are only getting one, make it Infamous.

I only played Infamous, didn't finish it. I got to the last section of the city and gave up since it was so repetitive. It's a fun game but just got tiring by the end. I do kind of want to play Prototype though, so I can be Andy Lau but that's neither here or there.

Pretty much what I was going to say. InFamous is much better than Prototype in pretty much every way.

I'd try out a demo of both if you can. They're pretty smilar but I think I like Prototype better overall. inFamous has a ridiculously good story but the gameplay can be really dry and repetitive and the enemies have godly aiming abilities at times, Prototype's AI tends to be either really dumb or absolute genius and it can also be really, realllllly repetitive.

If it helps any, Prototype feels kind of like Spider-Man 2.

I had both, but out of both of them I actually finished Prototype, if that tells you which one I preferred more.

I just felt like inFamous focused on 'pretty, pretty, shiny, shiny' and not enough on actual FUN.

Mind you, I also kind of thought that Prototype seemed like I was playing through a copy of Hulk: Ultimate Destruction from last gen with different skins on the characters. It's even by the same developer.

I had a blast playing through Infamous but I had to force myself to finish the last couple hours of Prototype. I grew bored with it's gameplay rather quickly.

To me, Prototype felt like I was replaying Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, without the awesome factor of being the Hulk.

Play around 40 percent or so of Prototype and stopped for good. I thought inFamous was a lot of fun though. Played through twice, once as good and once as evil. For me, inFamous was vastly superior. I liked inFamous's electrical powers more than Prototype's, and I hated PT's generic story and main character.

Ditto. The only incentive I had for continuing to play Prototype was for the easy trophies.

First of all, I have a disease that many here do: finding a good deal on a game, despite not having the time to play it. I am currently working through Dead Space, a FANTASTIC game that I missed out on last year. I can really see myself platinuming this one, and playing through it multiple times; something I only really did on a few games (that I love).

Secondly, I have looked into AC2. I don't think I would like AC1 (which actually would make this is VERY FIRST TIME that I play a sequel with no desire to play the earlier title(s)). But it looked like I could have gotten Infamous relatively cheaply. I was curious because I remember Prototype coming out so close in time to Infamous and being very similar games.

I'm afraid though that I'm just burned out on sub-par sandbox games. I say sub-par because I LOVED Fallout 3, but HATE GTA4. I don't know why. I played all the GTA's since GTA 2: London something something. I just can't get into GTA4. The controls still feel wonky for me and I just don't care about the characters AT ALL.

I'm looking forward to playing through AC2, and maybe Modern Warfare 2 at some point in the future when the next big thing is out and I can get these games cheaply.

PS - I know I have a PS3 trophy card, which if you click on, you can see my profile. But the image of the card itself is quite outdated --- Can anyone recommend me a fix or a different way to display an updated PS3 trophy card???

You should try the online for GTA IV, Frankski. All I find myself doing as of late is practicing driving and doing stunt jumps and other insane stuff in the Free Mode game mode.

It's pretty fun, especially when you get a bunch of like minded people who don't try coming in to practice for deathmatch by shooting you and your vehicle up for 20 minutes.

Haven't finished Prototype yet, but it's very fun so far. I played through inFamous several times, and it's great. If I HAD to choose between the two, I'd probably choose inFamous, but they're pretty much neck and neck.

Note all the pro-infamous people are praising story & what their favorite special effect was... absolutely nothing gameplay-related... that should tell you something major

I beat Infamous and own Prototype and Infamous is the superior game. Here let me list some flaws in Prototype

HUGE jump in difficult for no reason rather then an actual curve. There is no curve where you gradually get better and are equipped to handle the challenges. Prototype starts off as too easy then TOO HARD out of nowhere.

NO STORY. Prototype's story is minimal at BEST. To even get some grasp of the story you have to go out of your way and absorb the proper people to fill the web of intrigue. But not even really going with the story in the actual game is rather stupid.

City doesn't really feel alive. It's populated, there's a lot of buildings, BUT The bulidings do NOT have any individuality. they all essentially look the same and have rather flat design. The only thing varying them is size. The windows look ALL the same and there is no variation in the architecture UNLESS all those gamestop advertisements in the game count as variation.

Those are the big three that really irk me.

Honestly, I prefer The Incredible Hulk for 360/ ps3 over either. Once they patched the glitches, I feel it's one of the most criminally underrated games out. Better graphics and gameplay than either of the others, and the Hulk. Nuff said!

You forgot the Gamecrazy ads too. I think both companies were well represented in that game.

This. InFamous is the better game in every regard. Prototype almost felt like a last-gen game in comparison.

Hmm, neither game is worth your time. They both become dull after a few hours of gameplay. And both characters are very dry, and do very little to draw you into the story lines. Go play something else.

the gameplay for prototype is running around a bland city and mindlessly killing things/people. at least the gameplay in infamous has somewhat of a purpose depending on the decisions youve made in the game. if you took everything about infamous but you gave cole the powers of that prototype guy (no idea what his name. just goes to show you how irrelevant the story is), then that would be the best game, but that isnt the case.

they have similiar gameplay, so if you dont like the gameplay of one, theres a good chance you wont like the gameplay of the other. i didnt mind the gameplay in prototype, it just got boring to me cuz i felt like i was just beating up on random civilians for no apparent reason.

infamous' story is infinitely better than prototypes. its not fun to aimlessly wander around a city trying to find some dude to absorb to gain a little memory that hardly makes any sense to begin with. its poorly written and completely vacant of any emotion.

Let me address some of his complaints first before I tell what I thought of it (just finished it 2 days ago)

The bland city, well it is Manhattan in a 1/7th scale, but still it is based off of a REAL city, for better or worse, so not really there fault for taking some liberties with it, but not jazzing it up and making it more exciting, plus I was almost always in the air gliding or in a chopper so that was almost a non-issue to me, except when I was doing landmark or hint missions I was very rarely on street level for very long.

It all depends on how you play the game.

Same thing with the advertisements, unless you spend an inordinate amount of time in Times Square those signs are pretty rare to see (or I just didn't notice them too much since I was airborne most of the time, but they weren't as jarring and in your face as say the billboards in Bionic Commando (right in the beginning of the game no less)

To me the difficulty only ramped up to hair pulling levels in the last few missions (especially when you are being attacked non-stop and are trying to find some breathing room and there is none to be found, or when trying to power up) otherwise I'd say that it was tolerable, the only thing other than the end boss fight (get to that in a second) that was virtually impossible for me to complete were the military consumption missions on hard.

Especially the web target missions that I didn't need to do (I had completed the web except the last two story targets) and it was useless for me to do them other than to have them complete, the time limit coupled with the large amount of area to cover along with being attacked consistently by the military over and over on occasion was too much for me to take and after 10-15 tries I said to hell with it and moved back onto the story missions, but considering that isn't mandatory to do (unless you're gunning for platinum, I wasn't) it really isn't a major issue.

The final boss fight has to be one of the most single most irritating things I've played in awhile (no spoilers) but between him activating cheap mega attack moves, being on my @$$ keeping me from powering up and having to use one very specific devastator move to kill him (one I didn't use much in the main game, and discovered by trial and error until I saw how well it was working) and the artificial time limit on the fight as well, it felt more as a war of attrition than a big bad brawl.

On an aside if I was going to complain about something it would be the super soldiers and hunters / leader hunters. Alex gets all of these cool powers (power bomb) and I can't use them on any of them since they require grapple and only on regular hunters can you grapple, and only then to body slam. That was something that made me more mad, the fact that only regular enemies were affected by his powers gotten later in the game. And the one blade move became my overly abused power late in the game to kill those enemies as well.

The story, look below.

My gripes:

They could have used more variety in the consumption missions / skill missions. The infected missions were mostly destroy the hives, I mean 80% of the time I was doing the same thing, the two sight powers could have been used to give those missions some variety like a find the infected (ala the one story mission) of something else like that, same with skill missions, instead of use this (fill in the blank) to kill the enemy couldn't we have had something else to do.

Collect 250 glowing orbs, this....

I collected so many useless things in games it isn't funny, but I'm glad I did this in the first 3-4 hours of play (plus it gave me points to spend) but still almost four hours to collect little light balls, and I still ended up missing one landmark ball, they could have done better on that.

Ok my last gripe is the story, but not for the same reason Paco complains about it, I believe Prototype had an awesome story, problem was how they went about dispensing it, the fact you had to go around and find over 120 people (approx. 132 total some are gotten through story elements) and then sometimes they were hard to find and got killed when trying to consume them, now that was a stupid way to delve into the story.

Awesome idea, but there were just too damn many people to kill to get all the bits and pieces, I know they were fleshing out the world with all of the military grunt story bits, but considering about 20-30 of those were virtually the same they could have easily trimmed them down, or condensed a few of them, I think 80 people to consume would have been a much better number and it could have been 80 specific people, not 80 random (other than the story specific consumes) people you found accidentally when flying or running around (or using a guide/map in my case) to get them.

So I can see the complaints about how the story took too much work to get to see, and I agree, but there was a really good story there to be told, if you bothered to find it, and they leave the game open for a sequel which is cool, but hopefully they strengthen up some of the weak points in the game.

On the comparison end I liked how I had more control over Mercer, then I did of Cole (didn't like how he latched onto things I didn't want him too)

I don't really like comparing them both, and frankly, I'd just get both if you have any interest in sandbox type games they both have their strengths and weaknesses. Prototype is what you'd get it GTA, Mercs, and the Hulk were all put into one game, and while not perfect makes for a pretty fun time.

I think they're both worth playing on their own merits and I am glad to own both. Not much more to say other than that.
