any way to restore iPod touch 64 gig not through iTunes?

CAGiversary!
Long story short.. here goes.

About 2 weeks ago my new Touch wouldn't sync properly, every 5 days or so... it would say syncing and just stayed stuck there... so, I would restore the iPod and it would go through the process and be fine, until 5 days or so later it would do it again.

Today I get the same problem, but when I try to restore now, iTunes freezes everytime it says preparing to restore the iPod.

Is there anyway to wipe it clean from the Touch itself, so I can then treat it like a new iPod?...

I'm probably going to return it to Apple and get a new one under warranty, but I need the iPod today so was hoping I can at least do a quick fix for now, thanks for any help.

Try the DFU mode and getting the most recent firmware as that might help. I think you have to hook up to USB, press power and home, then hold home until a notification pops up in Windows that a device is in DFU mode.
