I just bought a used PS3 on eBay.

Did I make a mistake?

It seemed like a pretty good deal, once I factored everything in.

It's a 3 month old, barely played 80GB fat console, with two controllers (one Sixaxis and one knockoff GameStop), and three games: Little Big Planet GOTY Edition, Far Cry 2, and Silent Hill: Homecoming.

I bought it for $300 plus $15 shipping.

Did I get ripped off? Or is it an okay deal?

I wanted a 120GB slim, but those are going for pretty ridiculous prices right now, and I figured I'd at least be able to enjoy the backwards compatibility of the 80GB anyways.

considering sony.com and gamestop.com are selling 120gb PS3 slims for $299, yeah, I think you made a big mistake.

No way it's a fat 80gb unit that is only 3 months old.

On the brite side, if backwards compatibility is a necessity, then it was your only option.

I would check the label on it for the date, but if it works ok for you then its not a bad deal with the games. Prob could have done better, but i've seen worse

I hope you mean a Dual Shock 3 controller, because Sixaxis controllers haven't been included with the PS3 in a while. Either way I see no point in buying a fat ps3 unless you are getting it for 1/2 the price or something.

Yeah, a "3 month old" 80GB almost certainly wouldn't be backwards compatible.

I got my PS3 in September 2008, and got hosed on the BC. As well as a bunch of other stuff Sony yanked from it.

Maybe the thread creator likes having systems that spontaneously stop working once every 4 years.

Yeah, but both of those sites have it on a SERIOUS back order.

And Amazon's actually price gouging up the wazoo for it too.

Backwards compatibility is nice, for sure. But really, I just wanted a PS3 as soon as I could get one, seeing as how I'm in a panicked fever to play GoW3. The fact that it comes with LBP which I wanted anyway and two more games which I can play through before trading in seems to make the deal a little bit sweeter.

My only real concern is if the durn thing will work or not. But according to the eBay description, it's barely been played and is in like new condition. At least that's what it SAYS. It might be a bunch of bunk. But still, I weighed my options carefully, and I figured it should be worth a shot.

Has anyone else bought a used PS3? If so, how was your experience?

Do you not have stores in your area that have Slims for sale or something? I don't think you made a terrible deal but it wasn't the best either.

Yeah I ordered one on ebay recently, but I made sure it came with a warranty. As far as what you paid for it, thats not bad at all, it's about the average that ps3's are going for on ebay, at least when I checked. Ps3 has been working fine btw.

Now that I've looked at it a little closer, I seriously doubt that it'll have BC. That would have been nice, but at least I still have my old PS2 to fall back on.

And yeah, it's a Dual Shock 3 controller.

To be honest, I still think I got a fairly good deal, considering that it includes three games and two controllers. After figuring up the prices, I found that LBP: GOTY is still worth about $40 used. Far Cry 2 is worth around $10, and Silent Hill is worth about $16. So that's roughly $66 dollars worth of games. Plus, if you take into account whatever price the second GameStop controller cost (I'm gonna estimate somewhere between $10-$15 bucks), then I'm really getting the system for about plus or minus $225.

$225 for a three-month old PS3 doesn't really sound bad to me at all.

NO. I DON'T.

Believe me, I spent the ENTIRE DAY today store-hopping and looking for one. I called three different GameStops, then drove out to Best Buy, Target, Sam's Club, Wal-Mart, and Hastings. NO DICE.

I thought about trying hhgregg or Toys R Us, but I was getting tired and said "screw it".
You might have been better of getting a used system from gamestop for a warranty.
Trust me. If any of my GameStops HAD a used system, I would've bought it.

Memphis is SOLD. OUT. Believe me, I looked.

I'm in SF, spoke to a GameStop employee, and it seems like PS3 shipping is kind of backed up, but then pretty much all Target's I've been to have more than 4 in stock, I guess it's kind of hit and miss.

I was thinking of getting a BC compatible ps3 on craigslist, but with all the talk of PS3 phats having issues with the drive, I decided against it. Good luck with that ps3 phat.
Older 80gb do have BC. Only the newer 80gb don't have BC.
Word. My 80gb definitely is BC.
The only 80GB that were backwards compatible were the Motorstorm bundles.

And yes, OP, you paid too much.
Don't forget MGS4 80GB is also BC. Anyway as long as you are happy and everything is working I wont worry too much

There's no way that 80GB is only 3 months old(especially if it's BC). The 80GB models have been discontinued since last year.

As it's already been said, you could have had a 120GB slim brand new for what you paid if you were a little patient. But since you had to have it this instant, I guess it doesn't really matter if you got ripped off or not. This was your only choice.

Even though it was backordered on gamestop.com. I ordered last monday, and it shipped friday.
Why is everyone crazy over the slim PS3's??
The trend seems to be smaller electronics = better? I think the fattys look better too but I'll only buy a slim because of the 45nm chipset. Should run cooler and use less power.

Unless it's old stock, which it may very well be. There are still a lot of "phat" PS3s out there that have never been opened.

By the way, OP, I don't think you made a mistake. $300 isn't too much for one of these systems. Sure, you could have bought one of the ugly new ones, but personally, I prefer the old ones. And of course, if you enjoy it, even better!

I wish you enlisted the aid of CAG.
I'm sure trustworthy CAG's would have helped you get a new slim.

But in the end, when you start gaming it all doesn't matter :p.

Good luck with the PS3 :).

If you bought the system on eBay, you can get a warranty from Squaretrade for it. They're not expensive, especially since there are often times 20% off coupon codes floating around the web, which you can find with a simple Google search. It will give you peace of mind, as well as be helpful when you want to sell it.

Easiest way to tell if an 80GB PS3 is BC or not is the # of USB ports up front.

4 USB = BC 80GB

2 USB = Non-BC 80GB

How many USB ports does your PS3 have up front?

This! Also I believe the model is CECHE01

If you think you got a good deal, then you got a good deal. You probably could have done better, but it seems like you wanted one asap, based upon that the money spent to acquire one now probably was money well spent.
I think it's rated right where it should be.
Exactly. I'm glad mine has BC, since the only PS2s I own are all broken and in pieces.

I've had a 60GB, 80GB BC PS3. But my current PS3 is 80GB non BC. I believe the 60GB play all PS2 titles while the 80GB plays most of the PS2 titles. I know this cause Outrun Coast to Coast worked on the 60GB but not on the 80GB.

Okay, looks like my situation recently changed. Check this out:

I got a second chance offer from one of the bids that I lost on eBay. Turns out the guy who won the bid couldn't pay, and now the seller is giving me until tomorrow afternoon to buy it.

This one is a brand new 120GB slim, packaged with the first Uncharted game, for $332 bucks plus ten dollars shipping. That's about equal to what I would've paid if I had bought the system new after sales tax, plus I get a brand new game thrown in.

The problem is I've already payed for the old 80GB. So right now, I'm tempted to follow this strategy:

1. Buy the slim.
2. Wait for the fat to come in.
3. Keep the games and second controller and put the fat system on Craigslist for about $250 OBO.

Does this sound like a good plan? Or should I just take the older system and run with it?

What would YOU guys do?

I might add that I only have 15 hrs until the deal goes away, so whatever I do, I need to do it quick.

Do not buy another unit of EBay with no BM warranty support.
For that same amount (actually less), buy it at Kmart with GOW Collection free (worth more than Uncharted 1) $299/tx. Keep it sealed until your other unit arrives (hopefully it works great) then craigslist, do a return or ?

The problem is, I CAN'T buy it at Kmart. If you've read earlier, the PS3 is SOLD OUT AROUND THE CITY.

I suppose I could call Kmart tomorrow to see if they have one, but there's about a 99.999999% chance they won't.

I checked three GameStops, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target, Sam's Club, and Hastings. All sold out.

Why not just order one off gamestop.com like I did, and get a full warranty? It really didn't take that long. It took a full week to reach my door step.

I'd say just stick with the one you have, as there's quite a bit of margin for error in your plans. It's a guaranteed PS3, and the warranty can be purchased separately.

That's actually a pretty good idea. I know that GameStop has them on a serious backorder, but seeing as how the older one's already coming in, I can afford to wait.

I've thought about the matter a bit more, and I've decided just to wait until the one I bought actually comes in. As long as it works right, it'll do. Then later, I could order a new one from GameStop with a warranty, and sell the old one on Craigslist for about $200-$250.

I still think there's quite a bit of error in that plan, but it's your deal. Why don't you wnat the one you ordered anyway? If it's only because its the fat model, that's kind of dumb.

One last question, and then I SWEAR I'll leave you guys alone.

If I decide to buy a 1-year warranty from SquareTrade, should I buy it now, or wait until the system gets to my house? Or do I even have that option?

Right now, if I use a coupon, I can get a 1-year warranty $38.39. I don't mind paying that, just as long as the seller actually ships it.

It's just I've heard some horror stories about the fat model, like YLOD, DREs, and overheating. Plus, the 120GB hard drive would be nice, although I know I can just switch it out for my own. Considering that FFXIII is a 36 gigabyte install, that instantly takes out half my hard drive.

At this point, I dunno. I guess I'll just wait until I get the durn thing to see what I'll do. If it comes to my house and I have no problems with it, then I'll more than likely just keep it and upgrade it as time goes on.

Geez... I didn't have any of this drama last year when I bought my Wii on eBay. That was easy as pie.

Dude, you really aren't bothering anybody. This has been really helpful to me, as I hope to get a 60GB PS3 off eBay soon, so this has let me know some of the stuff I should look for. As for the warranty, I'd wait till it gets to your house if you can. If the seller takes a month to ship, then you just wasted over $3 on the warranty for that PS3less month.

I wouldn't call it a serious back order if it only took them 4 days to ship my PS3. I'd say a very mild back order.

How long ago did you order it, just out of curiosity?
