of course i would like to find out what some of you consider to be the 5 best movies you have seen. i am always looking for new movies to watch and i figure this may give people ideas for movie rentals. it can be a movie you just love, but not necessarily amazing, or it can a movie that has been praised by reviews. i just don't care as long as people don't bash each others choices.

my top 5 most enjoyable movies in no particular order:
into the wild
lotr:fellowship
district 9
wet hot american summer
devils rejects/frailty (could'nt choose one over the other)

In no particular order as well:
LOTR Trilogy
Zombieland
Anything by George A. Romero
Avatar
Black Hawk Down
The Hurt Locker
I can go on and on, but that is my top 5+1.

Hard to say and my answer will probably change depending on when you ask me but right now I'd go with:

No Country for Old Men
Cool Hand Luke
The French Connection
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The Big Lebowski

I've probably seen it 6 or 7 times now, but each and every time I have a massive grin on my face from beginning to end. Gene Kelly is one of my favourite people ever.

Not in order:
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Repo! The Genetic Opera
Evil Dead 2
Chasing Amy
Clerks

Yea, Kevin Smith snuck in twice.

Haven't seen the other 3, but these are wonderful.

Probably in this order:

1: Snatch
2. Ghost in the Shell
3. American Beauty
4. Fight Club
5. Leon

Gattaca, Memento, and Mononoke almost made the cut.

These are movies I could watch over and over again, but I don't necesasrily think they are the 'best' movies. No order:

Dark Crystal
Alien/Aliens
Star Wars
Gladiator
Good the Bad and the Ugly

The Shawshank Redemption
Goodfellas
The Godfather
Sunset Boulevard
Saving Private Ryan

No particular order, just things that I've watched over and over again and will likely never get tired of.

These are my favorite 5 movies:
1) Saving Private Ryan
2) Wedding Crashers
3) Robin Hood Men In Tights
4) Gladiator
5) LOTR Trilogy

Sito, Demolition Man is one of my guilty pleasures as well... I love the line "Excuse Me Sir What's Your Boggle." Who would have thought that Sandra Bullock from those days would win an oscar... haha.

Leon (favorite movie ever)
Die Hard (an action movie and a Christmas movie!)
The Life Aquatic
The Royal Tenenbaums
Fight Club

Haha, when I was growing up I wore out Demolition man and Commando on VHS.
To all the people who liked Memento, check out The Salton Sea. It's not as much of a thinking mans movie, but I feel they are similar and love them both.
Metal Gear Solid 4
Final Fantasy XIII
Xenosaga
Final Fantasy X
Star Ocean: The Last Hope
some great movies there :p

Gangs of New York
The Godfather
The Godfather Part 2
The Deerhunter
Traffic

My top 5 list is ever changing because I can't make up my damn mind. But these are off the top of my head that stand out.

Picking 5 is hard, but here are some (in no particular order):

Gladiator
Shawshank Redemption
The Dark Knight
Bourne Ultimatum
The Departed

Rocky - I fell in love with this film in high school. In fact, I remember watching it so much that it actually motivated me to push myself beyond my physical limits in high school sports. Without a doubt my favorite underdog story of all time.

Terminator 2 - I don't know whether to applaud my parents or question their best judgements as I remember watching this movie, under their discretion, when I was only 6 or 7 years old. I loved it then and still do. Arguably one of the best action movies of all time.

My Dog Skip - I remember the first time I saw this film. It was back in the 8th grade or so. It was a lazy weekend evening and my sister and I were surfing the tube when I 'left it' on TBS. I didn't even realize what it was that we were watching, but found it interesting enough to watch. A heart warming tale of a boy and his best friend, his dog. I found the movie to be so gripping that once it was over I had to 'sneak' to the bathroom afterwards to dry my eyes.

Forrest Gump - Unyieldingly entertaining. A timeless masterpiece of American history.

Can't think of a 5th at the moment...

The Searchers
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
Bruce Campbell vs. The Army of Darkness
Hard Boiled
Once Upon a Time in the West

Honorable Mentions go to Equilibrium and The Matrix.

Children of Men
28 Days Later
The Dark Knight
The Matrix
Hot Fuzz

In no particular order, except Children of Men, that one is definitely number one.

There are so many I had to leave off, but its interesting that my faves are old skool:

5. Blade Runner-anime/manga come to life
4. Vanishing Point-fast and furious for grown folks
3. Enter the Dragon-man u come straight outta a comic book
2. Empire Strikes Back-for my daddy issues
1. Raiders of the Lost Ark-pulp serial goodness of biblical proportions

Honorable Mention:
The Machinist-bale at his thinly-veiled best
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly-leave it to the I-talians to make a great western
Terminator 2-was THE MOVIE for five years in the 90s
Ben Hur-podracers be damned... chariots, jesus, AND lepers FTW
Saving Private Ryan-hanks, daniel faraday, and damon get blown to bits
Akira-you mean cartoons arent just for kids?
Tron-video games are cool and CGI will conquer all
Let the Right One In-my fave 'horror' movie ever
El Topo-drugs are bad... from the man that 5th element was ripped from

(No real order)

A Clockwork Orange
Office Space
The Fifth Element
Braveheart
Star Wars

All I got off the top of my head...
