Hip-Hop has lost another icon - "Guru" (from Gang Starr fame)

Pretty sure "partner" as in business partner.

Gangstarr was the whole reason I started making beats.
The influence cannot be worded properly here.

I saw this today and it shocked the shit out of me, like when I walked into a pizza parlor and found out Michael Jackson had died. "What?!"
RIP GU

I posted this this morning in the hip-hop thread, but Guru does deserves the mention outside of it. Guru & Premier was one the best duos of all time.

I've been branching out from my usual indie rock / electro lately -- in hip hop I'm liking Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, and Sage Francis. Kid Cudi's alright too in a different way, his stuff's catchy but kinda shallow.

Now would be the time to check out Gang Starr.
Most people on this site would know him more as the voice of 8-Ball from the GTA series.
NO WAY!! HE WAS 8 BALL?!?!

"Say hello to 8 Ball, ladies" ahaha

R.I.P. Guru...

The most fucked up part of it all being that today was the first time in 10 years I've heard a Gangstar song on the radio. Time to throw on my Moment of Truth cd.
That statement is kinda suspect.
Your not the only one who thinks that.

One of my all time fav mc's.

R.I.P. Guru

RIP Guru. Daily Operation is a personal favorite that comes right at the tail end ('92-ish) of what I consider the golden age. I always thought that Pos of De La said it best: "If I had to join a gang, I think I'd join Gang Starr." They were among the best acts no matter how you broke it down: beats, lyrics, smarts.

As for the statement, it may seem awkward, but I'd imagine that Guru's worried that Primo was going to try to tour again under the Gang Starr name. There's been a disagreement between them over the future of GS: Guru says it's over, Primo says it's not over until Primo says so. They just couldn't get along later on (due in part to Primo ditching on tour and leaving Guru high and dry).

I don't know why they couldn't smooth things over, but I think Guru's right to want the act to end. It's not Gang Starr if it isn't Primo and Guru.
Rip Guru. IF you have not his final statement here is the link:

That's fake according to Guru's family

The Elam family wishes to thank the fans of our son/brother/father uncle/nephew/cousin Keith aka GURU for the outpouring of love, concern and support.

Our hearts are broken by the loss of someone we loved so much. GURU was devoted to his young son, who will most keenly feel his absence.

GURU suffered from multiple myeloma* for over a year. Accrued complications from this illness led to respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. As a result, GURU was in a coma from mid February until his death and never regained consciousness. Early on the morning of April 19th, he became hypertensive due to low blood pressure. He again went into cardiac arrest and slipped away from us.

GURU died far too young but he was, and we are, proud of all his many legendary musical contributions.

The family is not aware of any foundations established by GURU.* We know and understand that countless fans want to express their condolences and love and, to that end, we are planning a memorial event in the near future that will be all-inclusive. Please look for further details from the family as they become available.

so i turn on MTV James around 11 p.m. last night, after drinking some wine, feeling good, thinking I'll listen to some GangStarr tunes that would be on in tribute...

and I get back to back Drake songs? WTF... no sign of Guru... such bullshit. This wouldn't happen if 50 died.

Wow, whoever put out the fake statement (the Solar guy?) is incredibly lame. Wonder if Primo will say anything.
All those old-school dudes should've gotten together for a tribute. Ed Lover, Chuck D, Fab Five, etc.
Speaking of, Biz Markie, Craig G, and Big Daddy Kane are actually set to perform around my neck at a place called Jovan's. Saw a poster yesterday back in my old stomping grounds and said ":dunce:".
