What can happen in the situation that you don't get braces?

CAGiversary!
Everyone these days are getting braces, yet I don't think I will. There are some small flaws in my teeth, nothing big. If I don't get braces, what could happen? Could these small problem turn big?

don't know...all i know is that i had braces from 5th to 8th grade and it was bullshit...from sucking my thumb til a late age, yeah i know  , my two middle bottom teeth for slighty curved inward.......i had braces for 3 years to fix this and that was back when you were supposed to wear the full-on head-gear....i wore it maybe 15 times throughout the 3 years....for some reason, even though the only flaws in my mouth were the bottom two teeth, i had braces on my upper and bottom teeth....and the head-gear only strapped into the top teeth.....when all was said and done, the braces came off and fucked my teeth up more than they fixed them.....some teeth were cracked, most were stained, a lot of discoloring, and the top two teeth curved inward.....ive been working on getting them fixed for the past year now, with an appt on average, every 2 weeks....it has cost me probably around $5,000 so far and the next step is crowning a few and then popping some veneers on the rest of the screwed-up teeth that are visible when i smile....

given the technology that is available now, id say go for it....though im regretting every second of it right now....if you dont get them now, whats the worse that could happen? you might need them later...when technology advances even higher....ive heard of people getting them on and off within 6 months now...crazy

At worst, your teeth will grow in somewhat crooked, and you'll feel somewhat hesitant to smile and show your crooked teeth. On the other hand, I did know one lady who got her teeth straightened in her mid-thirties. She lost a lot of weight in the following weeks because her teeth hurt like hell. :D

actully you should ask a professional if anything bad would happen in the long run if you didnt, i "needed" them when i was a kid but i never got them, nothing bad will happen i just have a gap between my front teeth, so i thought it was silly to worry about it.

what sucks about braces is that your crooked teeth are straightened within the first 2 or 3 weeks of having the braces, yet you have to keep the braces on for like 3 years.

The best advice is what punq said: talk to someone who could tell you for sure.

That said, I "needed" (and still probably do need) braces. My teeth aren't all that great - I've got an overbite and a gap between the front two teeth - but I've had no issues at all.

Not quite related to the subject, but I'm thinking that the Invisalign thing might be worth trying later in my life. Does anyone here know how well that works?

If your wisdom teeth haven't come in yet they could potentially push your other teeth around and really mess them up. You might even wait until you have them removed before getting braces.

Invishalign worksh shuper!!!

I never had braces, I had a retainer in 3rd grave for an overbite or something. Other than that, I've been fine, my teeth are relatively straight. Guess I"m just lucky.

If you need them, get them, they probably won't get any worse later (unless you don't get your wisdom teeth pulled, which chould affect your other teeth), but it just depends on how you want your teeth to look. Not everyone needs braces, I never had them, but my teeth came in nice.

Get a second opinion... my dentist said I "needed" them, but really I didn't. My teeth are far from perfect, some crowding, really insignificant stuff. There are a lot of potential problems with getting braces, so you should weigh both sides.

My first dentist said my teeth were fine. Eventually, I moved and had to go see another dentist. He said I needed braces and my teeth were horrible and all my cavities were filled wrong. He re-did one of my fillings and it came loose and hurt like hell for a month. I eventually went back to my first dentist and he fixed it.

You have to look out, sometimes they're a lot like used carsales men. Some have a real "you aren't a dentist, who are you to argue" attitude.

My 2 front bottom teeth incline SLIGHTLY and my left lower canine tips forward marginally. For that, the dentist wanted me to get $3000 braces.

It seems like orthadotists will tell you that you "need" them if you have even the smallest flaw. Probably 99% of the kids in my school that have gone have had the orthodontist that they need them. I'm thinking it's kinda like doctors diagnosing ADD these days. They just want the money.

I'm one of the few people I know my age that didn't need braces. My brother needed braces and he just got his off not that long ago, but I really wonder if he needed them in the first place.

ya i unfortunetly have them on now getting them off at the end of the year. IMO i would rather have braces on for 1 1/2-2 years then have crappy looking teeth.

Orthodonture can seem like a waste of time bcause the worst consequences don't arise until middle-age. It wasn't until the early part of the 20th Century that hey started seeing a relation between crooked but not necessarily aesthetically reppellant teeth and people who developed severe problems and lost most of their teeth in their forties.

In my case I had some compelling evidence. I happened to have two especially out of alignment teeth that were identical to those of my uncle on my mother's side. He went through a lot of very painful dental work in his late forties and still lost about eight teeth in a year. Without the dentistry he might have every tooth in his mouth after the resulting infection destroyed his gums.

So I was not terribly resistant to getting those braces back in 1977. Be glad. The technology has come a long way since then and the process is much easier, less painful, and the hardware less obvious.
