Quite possibly the dumbest trade in I've ever heard of...

CAGiversary!
Ok, so for those that don't know, I manage a local video game store here in Louisiana. Anyways, we deal in everything from Nintendo all the way up to the current stuff. So this guy comes in apparently with a SEALED Majora's Mask CE and says can I get 10 dollars for this, I really need money. Now we were going to give him more, but since he set the price point we gave him his ten, and he couldn't have been happier. For those that do not know, this game can easily sell for $100...talk about not doing your homework.

Hm, I got a really good condition sealed copy from Strell's lowball sale for $25. He actually had 5 or 6 of them for that lowball...

I don't think this is all that rare to find sealed. Still, $10 is a nice price point. There have been stupid trades like this at two of the PnT stores in my area. At one someone traded in a sealed StarFox 64 for $2.00 in credit and at the other someone traded in a sealed Final Fantasy VII (GH) for $7 and some change in cash. To top it off, the same store that got the FFVII trade also got a complete, mint condition Snatcher for Sega CD that they sold for $4.99 (meaning they paid the guy $1 or less for it).

If there is one thing I've learned over the last few years, its that very few people know what their gaming stuff is actually worth.

I remember that... All of the copies sold for under $40. It is kind of funny how some people are with games and the prices they go for... Hell, back in about 2006, my friend GAVE me a BL copy of Final Fantasy VII, which I kept for awhile until I sold a Final Fantasy game lot on Ebay. Hell, I just happened to get a BL Silent Hill with the strategy guide from Craigslist for $5 for both. Oh well, other people's ignorance is our bliss.

Indeed. I recently picked up a complete SNES Chrono Trigger everything in excellent condition for $5. Just look at all the monster scores we've picked up - yardsale thread, craigslist thread, pawn shop, eBay finds etc.

Craigslist has been slow for me since that awesome SNES complete games and other goodies score that had the complete Earthbound, sealed Zelda Collector's Edition etc., but I get about 2 or 3 monster scores like that a year that make it all worthwhile.

I can beat that deal

I remember someone had an ad in the paper Sega gensis with Cd with 32x add on for 150 bucks with around 20 games... well he said he really wanted to take it over to mcvans (a local game trader here) But they didnt open till noon... I told them I give them 100 bucks for all of it and meet them at 10...

Dude drove down and we meet at a mcdonalds .... saw the gen. wasnt that big of deal... 32x was cool of the 20 or so games 10 were nice.. but shocker was IT WAS A FRONT LOADING SEGA CD

he looks at me and goes... i know i probally can get more cash out of this but i be happy to take 100

I told them you know you can get A LOT MOre on ebay but he said he didnt want to go the ebay route.

So i took a risk it would all work and gave them the 100... Everything worked perfect and sold the front loading sega cd player for around 300 bucks

made a nice 200 buck profit and had the gensis and the 32x along with the 20 games (i think i sold the rest off around 100 or 150 so made a nice 35o profit

Now the biggest thing i regret not buying.. Someone had a TOP LOADER NES for 20 bucks (could of sold it easy for 150 ) but without knowing it worked or not wasnt worth risking 20 (this was before i knew nintendo could of repaired it DOH)))

Was just at gamestop and the guy in front of me wanted to trade in his LBP GOTY from the system bundle because his kid didnt want it. So the clerk OPENS it up, then checks the price saying its $8 credit. WTF? I know gamestop doesnt take sealed games as trade, but the person totally didnt have to open it just to check the value of it. I wanted to be outraged for the guy but he didnt seem to care.
Lots of stuff
When was this... When I checking the value of a front loader Sega CD it's no where near $300. Course... half the time there are no working ones on ebay.

I can top that. When our first WalMart moved into the area in the mid 90's or so they had an issue with the rock on the mountain behind the store being very unstable. So unstable that a boulder actually crashed down either by the building or into it in the back.

So while they built our current Super WalMart they moved their operations from the unsafe store into an old Jamesway store just down the road from my house. I remember distinctly going there in the late 90's at 2-3am out of boredom and seeing a whole endcap FILLED with new in box NES Top Loader sets.

The price.................
$15 each.
Thing is, I had more than enough on me at the time cuz I just got paid the day before and I could've bought ALL of them.

this was Years ago... i think right when they started doing the top loaders..maybe a year after the cd came out i know it was a long time ago .. that was another reason i was shocked the dude was selling everything so cheap.. he probally had almost 600 to 700 bucks in items and let it all go for 100

my cousin even had a BETA sega cd system... back then she didnt understand what BETA was and took the system back cause it didnt have all of the features a Sega cd should of had now she wishes she kept it cause it would probaly been worth a lot of cash

so just out of curiosity is a nes top loader really that rare because i have one but i think one of the cables is missing, and if i remember correctly last time i tried to play it (around 5 years ago) it didn't want to work sometime( can i gt it fixed)

You should have told him the true value and not took advantage of that man. He may have needed the money to feed his family and had no choice but to sell far below the market value.

Working at a locally owned game store, I had a guy come in with a garbage bag full of games. The guy looked like a stereotypical crackhead, so I was really skeptical of what was in the bag.

In there, he had a number of PS1 and Xbox games. I remember he had FFVII (Black Label), Marvel Vs. Capcom (PS1), Marvel vs. Capcom (Xbox), and Jet Moto II. Our store was buying PS1 and Xbox games for $1.50 per (sold for $9.99 each). He got around $50.00 and was happy.

I placed the games on the shelf (as per policy), and waited. When my manager came to cover the 2nd shift, he combed through the shelves to see if anything interesting came in. When he clocked in, I immediately clocked out, went to the shelf, and grabbed 10 games or so.

The look on his face was priceless as he was ringing up my purchase.

Think again, I would have done the same thing too. Most likely sell them back on ebay.

Sega CD came out in 1992, Ebay wasnt around till 1995, and wasn't so popular till a few years later. Yeah, you're talking out of your ass.

I still remember the saddest trade I ever saw working at Gamestop was some kid who traded in an N64 and about 10-12 games (nothing earth shatteringly rare, but decent stuff like Mario 64 and Mario Kart) and had just enough credit to buy..... Jet Li's Rise to Honor

A guy I was dating traded a DVD player for a VCR... needless to say, I am not dating him anymore. If you were that desperate for a VCR I am sure the thrift has one for less than $5, no need to trade a DVD player for it (but that was just stating the obvious, most of us already know that).

I traded games back in rarely during my youth, but I remember one boo-boo where I traded in a Legend of the Dragoon (hated that game, played the whole thing) for an Overblood (ps1). Also I'm pretty sure I dumped Robotrek for SNES plus a bunch of NES games for less than what the market value would be today.

@SaraAB: Good for you. VCRs are the sort of thing that can be found for free with a little diligence, and a man who would trade down for one is not a wise man.

I remember (and hate myself for) trading in my mint game/guide of Valkyrie Profile back in the day. Just didn't appreciate it at the time. I'm sure I bought something stupid with the credit too.

Thankfully, I managed to find a used copy of it in my brief time working at Gamestop. Only good thing that came of that job.

My friend traded in his Saturn with the entire Panzer Dragoon series including PD Saga, Nights, Guardian Heroes, Dragon Force, import of Radiant Silvergun, and a handful of other games for $80. He was really hard up for money at the time, but man, hearing that made me cry. I would've given him double that if he'd asked.

.

Why? Maybe he got them for a few dollars from a flea market. Maybe you should make him go back and give fair market value to whomever he bought them from. And then the flea market dealer should go back and give fair market value to his source.

How far back does this "obligation" go?

I completely agree, someone who would do something so ridiculously stupid is definitely someone that I do not want to spend any time with or god forbid have to put up with for the rest of my life (he had a job too, so its not like he was so hard up for cash that he couldn't have looked around for a cheap VCR).

I don't personally know anyone else who would trade a DVD player for a VCR, because they know better.

I think he means the guy working at the store should have given him the actual store amount for the game. Like, if the store would have given him $20 for the game, he should have given him the $20, not the $10 he said he'd take without knowing the amount.

I had a similar Walmart store too. It was Nov 2001 and it had only been open a year or 2 and I was wlking throught the Video Games sention and what was setting on the shelf? A slim SNES sealed in the box mint for $30 bucks. They also had tons of extra controllers in the package for $5. I didnt even think about it. I still have it in my game room, lol

same with the PnT i go to. they had a copy of Resident Evil Gaiden sealed. i thought to myself that they probably paid the person $10 for this and they're probably going to sell it for alot more. when i asked the price, they went and looked at amazon and thats when i said no thanks.
