neighbor has same internet service but is MUCH FASTER THAN MINE ??

Me and my neighbor both have AT&T Elite service, I asked him to run the speedtest.net thing and his download speed showed up as 5.13 MB/s while mine at my house ( keep in mind we are neighbors and houses are about 50 feet from each other ) mine was only 1.26 MB/s.

Why is there such a difference ? I have a gaming PC that is very fast and he has a shitty celeron processor in his pc (SLOW) !! WTF !!

I heard that that test site isn't that great. Also, what is your network setup and what is theirs? Router brand and model? Wired or wireless? Devices online at once? Etc.

I have a WRT54GS (firmware v7.2) . I do not know my network setup because I dont know what that means haha. My PC I did the test on is the main ( WIRED ) PC. there are " zero " devices connected to my router when I took the test.

do you know a better speedtest site ??

I prefer Speakeasy.net for speed tests on my connection. Every time I use speedtest I get the exact same results for my down stream.

It always reads 24.99 which is weird since I know it fluctuates. Speakeasy always seems to show a more accurate reading.

Being that I have Comcast, they also have their own speed test on their site. AT&T might have the same somewhere and that might be a better test.

Speedtest.net is fine.

The hardware in your PC and their PC wont make a difference as far as internet speed goes.

You said you are connected to a router, are they? If they're directly connected to the modem and you aren't, maybe there's some sort of issue with your router. Try connecting directly to the modem and run the test again.

Speakeasy: 8.08 down/0.95 up
Speedtest: 11.36 down/0.94 up

Bit of a difference between the two.

As for your issue, try cutting out your router. Also, is he using a router in his setup?

Okay I removed the "Router" form the setup and now am connected directly from the modem.

after doing so I still have the same results

Are you sure your neighbor is paying for the exact same service that you have?

lol i was thinking the same thing

Just call your ISP and bitch that you're getting nowhere near your max. That is assuming that you're actually on your acclaimed AT&T Elite DSL package and not AT&T Express DSL package. Unless of course you're using Uverse, then the express package doesn't exist.

This one seems to be the most accurate for me, it just sucks that you have to put in your address every fucking time:

You must be using dsl right?

Well can multiple reasons why he has a better connection than you. It could be you have to much static on your line from poor shielding, maybe your panel is to close to a major power source and its intterupting the flow, maybe he has newer phone lines in his house. It could also be he connects more directly into a slick on the phone lines outside your house while your on another one.

If you're neighbor has that for his DSL wow that's pretty fast.

Could it be your modem? Do you rent from AT&T or do you have your own? Router wise what kind does your neighbor have?

yeah I am positive, when they came and hooked everything up he unscrewed my phone jack from the wall do you think possibly hit a wire and messed it up or something ??

my neighbor doesn't own a router, and the modem I am using is from AT&T it is a silver Motorola one.

okay just got off the phone with them and they sad they are going to come check it out and install a new modem. then I just kinda kept nagging about there service being slow and they gave me FREE 3 MONTHS !!! :D

It could also be that they didn't setup your dsl profile to the correct one. They did that with me before, old speed was around 2.5 Mb/s and upgraded to 6 Mb/s. They said it would take about a week for there to be a change. 2 weeks pass and same speed. Called up tech support, they had me set up an appointment with some specialist (thankfully it was within the same day) and the guy said my connection is still the old 2.5 Mb/s profile, he did something and then said restart my router. After that, I have my new faster speed.

Long story short, call tech support and say you are not getting the speed you are paying for.

This and:

Mega-BYTES/s or Mega-BITS/s I'm assuming the second one, there's a difference. My cousins get a bit much faster speed, probably going to call them someday maybe.
