I guess it is that time in the system's lifecycle now. I went into Gamestop today and noticed that the PS2 games are now in one bin instead of two. I asked the girl at the counter and she confirmed that the change is likely permanent. They also have a couple boxes of CD-only games for $5 and under. So, I would guess that if there is anything you want for PS2 from Gamestop that you should get it soonish.

Have to wait until next Friday to start buying up some of these PS2 games, or just using Amazon.

Are there any must-have games for under $5?

I don't wanna spend too much money, but if this one of my last chances to get a classic-to-be from a store rather than online, I don't mind spending a couple bucks.

So far I have to grab:

Ico
R.A.D.(Robot Alchemic Drive).
Odin Sphere
GrimGrimoire
Radiata Stories
Phantom Brave
Disgea
Disgea 2
Fire Pro Wrestling Returns
Shadow Of the Colussus
Tales of Legendia
Tales of the Abyss
La Plucelle Tactics
Klonoa 2
ZOE
ZOE 2
Gun Griffon Blaze
Sky Gunner
Silpheed Lost Planet
Yakuza
MGS Series
God Hand
Mark of Kri
Mark of Kasai
Hokuto No Ken (Fist of the North Star)
Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria
Magic Pengel: The Quest for Color
Ys: The Ark of Napishtim
Stella Deus
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES

Years to fully clear out, but a short while for good copies of good games to be gone. Then your left with some pretty slim pickings. I might just pick up stuff off Amazon pending how my copy of DQ VIII looks(took 1 day to get delivered). Have to pick it up after work from the parents house. Amazon prime trial ftw!

Some stores might've started a few months back. At one of the stores in SF, they used to have 2 bins full right in the middle of the store. I went back a few months and they had only one standing rack, only a quarter of what it used to be.

The rest of the stores in the city carry mostly disc only stuff.
It is going to take years for them to actually get rid of most of their PS2 stock. I wouldn't start panicking yet.
My local GameStop had one Game Boy Color game as recently as earlier this year.

Wouldn't be surprised to see that, now the PS2 is near the end of its cycle.

At this time I don't know what games to pick up for the PS2, as I have most of the "must-have" games for PS2. And I am spending way-less time on the PS2, other trying to find time to finish Tales of Abyss and return that to my bro (been "borrowing" close to a year now!)

It has taken the Xbox about 2 years to reach 50% and that is a console that has been obsolete for a long time. The PS2 is still fairly popular by comparison. I would say in 3 years we'll finally hit 50% off and 4 years before we hit 75%.

All i know is i've been playing it more than my PS3. Loving Rogue Galaxy, just got my MINT copy of Dragonquest VIII for $11 shipped. Better than any copy I found at the 5 gamestops I visited. I can't wait for pay day friday.

True, I would dare to say that PS2 is console for RPGs!

Though no sequels for Chorno series, Parasite Eve, Final Fantasy Tactics and other JRPGs were made. :whistle2:(

I don't think Gamestop even carries Xbox games anymore. I know they were turning them away when I was there one day browsing.

I just recently got Rogue Galaxy for the PS2, but I haven't had the time to start playing it yet. I love my PS2 and I'll definitely take advantage if they are clearing stock of games!

The first step was when they yanked them off the wall displays a few months ago. They still seem to have a nice amount of stuff, but most of it is pretty beat now that's it shoved in bins. Still, I've found some nice stuff recently, though I'd guess that's going to lessen considerably within 6 months.

The bins make it so hard to find things. Only 1 store which is over 40 minutes away(Livingston) has them alphabetized, and and 1 10 minutes away (Preakness Shopping Center) also alphabetized is worth it. The one on 23 has like 4 bins, but I literally spent 2 hours trying to find a copy of DQ8, natta. They only had the CD behind the counter. None of the employee's offered to help check the racks or ask me if I needed help.

I have noticed a decrease in quality to, as if they are pulling out all the bad copies/damaged cases etc with more stickers than ever plastered over them. Friday can't come soon enough, Amazon is gonna have to ship a big order to my house.

The GSs around me still have a full wall of PS2 games on display. And there are still Xbox games around that I'm waiting hit 75% clearance, GS is taking forever to finish the cycle. Most GSs have sent the Xbox games to one store in the area.

PS2 games will be around for a while. PS1 games were around at the beginning of this gen or close to it, iirc. PS2 is even more popular.

I'm definitely waiting for a huge markdown of 50% or better or b1g1f..can't wait to grab some games i missed 10 years ago

Nah, as some of you have said, it's going to take at least a couple of years for the PS2 stock to thin down. I'd define the "clearing out" phase begins when they stop taking trade in. It's been almost a year since they stop taking xbox trades before we start seeing great xbox deals, and it wasn't until the B1G1 that the stock really depleted quickly.

Just this last B2G1 I picked up 15 PS2 games, 6 were $5 and 9 were $2! So, there are still many games to get yet.

Any of you have the (Lego) Soccer Maina? Took me a year of hunting before I came across a complete copy for $2!

WHAT? i thought that was only for the xbox. wish i had known i coulda done this with ps2

The GameStop that is near me ships everything over a 1000 miles away to another store. The manager says they hope to never see it come back to their store again....lol

I do not feel like paying $100 more for another PS2, I kind of wish Sony would offer a PS3 that can play PS2 games. I know it would probably raise the hardware costs, but at least offer the option...

Now the gamestop in the mall has gotten rid of their bins! The website still lists games as being available there; I think I'll have to ask them if they still have any ps2 games in the store the next time I go.

I just asked them how long they'd keep PS2 a few months back, and they said "Atleast 6 more years."

Clearly that was a lie. Gah, there's still shitloads of PS2 titles I need.

During the time period when Gamestop was phasing out DC games certain stores kept the games they had in the back or behind the counter. Pretty odd considering no one was going to find them there, but I guess they do it for space reasons. However, I haven't heard of them clearancing out PS2 games yet, and all of my local stores still carry the same selection as always.

You can also download PS2 games from your Xbox 360 if you want to play them. I'm not too concerned about Gamestop fazing them out.

You didn't read the rules, did you?

Many here buy games to collect. It makes me happy to know that your pile of pirated s#%! will never be worth a dime :)
