Best Buy Launches Nationwide Video Game In Store Trade-Ins - There is no $20 Bonus

CAGiversary!
Important Update - There is no $20 trade-in bonus on top of trade-in value
I contacted Erin at BB (she put out the press release) to ask for some clarification and she replied right away with this:
Hi Michael:
I’ve actually had to make a correction to our announcement. The $20 GC will be on over 100 titles. However, it will not be on top of the trade-in value as we had originally announced. Apologies for the miscommunication. Thank you for checking.

Best,
Erin

Sorry if this is in the wrong spot and I copied this from Kotaku

Electronics retailer Best Buy has rolled out its new video game trade-in program nationwide, offering a $20 gift card with select titles to help offset the fact that GameStop gives more credit on average.

Best Buy's new trade-in program goes wide this week, launching in nearly 600 locations around the country, with more in the coming months. Customers in participating stores will be able to take their games to the customer service counter or, in select locations, a dedicated trade-in counter, swapping their used titles for store credit. Game consoles and game accessories are also tradable.

starting on August 29, more than 100 titles will be eligible for a $20 gift card when traded in at Best Buy stores.

Specific titles getting the bonus aren't listed anywhere yet. Bonus $20 doesn't go live until the 29th so I guess the list will be available then.

Alittle competition for in-store trade ins is good. Even if the cash offer is junk, break gamestop's monopoly with the "casual gamer" on this. People will always go to those offering the highest cash back, so it would be nice if BB and gamestop got into a price war. Gamers will be the winner

Limit: We will not accept more than 3 games of the same title and platform from a customer (or address) in a year. Please do not submit more than the limit as excess submissions WILL NOT BE RETURNED.

God dammit. . .

There goes a decent number of the flipping community.

Kane and Lynch II has a TIV for $33...so if I were to trade that in this weekend, I would get $53 in total????

Freakin sweet...

I predict an initial rush, just like Amazon saw, to take advantage of the $20 GC promo and then mass exodus. There's still huge potential for flipping here.

In fact, if Splinter Cell makes the list there's already a $12 flip. BB will become a revolving door pretty quick. . .

It's going to turn into the same thing we run into at gamestop where we all stand behind soccer moms as they express there shock over how Madden 08 only gets $.50.

All the games I estimated have decent trade-in values. Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds gets me $12, 50 Cent Blood on the sand is $8, Bad Company is $6. Not bad.
The only one Kotaku mentions is RDR, which will get you $39 on Sunday... If that value holds, BB is gonna get a copy of RDR on Sunday...
I will be with you, brotha :p RDR will be gone for that price.

How many people have multiple copies of the same game for the same system?

You guys DO realize that theres very little chance the 20 dollar gift card is on top of the TIV right? They probably mean that 100 games will get you a 20 dollar gift card....

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if this holds true.
Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if this holds true.
I'm not saying you guys are wrong. I'm just thinking that it may be a temporary thing designed to bring the latest releases in. In other words, they won't want to start accepting trades only to get a bunch of games with a TIV of 7 and limited resale value. They'll want the red deads, maddens, etc.

Also here's the official press release with more info on where to trade it in and such:

Best Buy® Now Ready to Take Your Old Video Games

Trade-In Program Now Live in Stores Nationwide; Receive $20 Best Buy Gift Card on Select Titles

MINNEAPOLIS, August 26, 2010 – Gaming enthusiasts nationwide now have more reasons to shop Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) as their gaming destination. Launching in close to 600 Best Buy stores this week, with additional stores to soon follow, the new Best Buy Trade-In program offers customers an opportunity to sell pre-owned video games. To celebrate the new offering, customers who trade in their games beginning this Sunday, August 29, will receive a $20 Best Buy Gift Card on more than 100 popular titles.

“The expansion of our trade-in program reaffirms our commitment to consistently pursue new ways to bring a better gaming experience to consumers,” said Chris Homeister, senior vice president and general manager for the home entertainment group at Best Buy. “Fall marks the launch of several highly-anticipated gaming titles and new technology, and we’re thrilled to provide gamers with innovative ways to connect with the games they love.”

Consumers can now bring their previously played video games into Best Buy and trade them for an instant Best Buy gift card to use for purchasing anything in the store, including any game or gaming accessory. Soon, they will be able to purchase a pre-owned game as well.

Those who take advantage of the new Trade-In program in store can visit the Customer Service desk, or in select locations a dedicated Trade-In desk within the gaming department, to turn in their games. Best Buy will continue to offer a similar program online at BestBuy.com that enables customers to get estimates for their games, mail them in for free and receive a Best Buy gift card 7-14 days later. Trade-In prices in-store will match the prices shown online.

I think that makes it pretty clear that 100 titles will have a value of $20.
The $20 GC will obviously be on top of the TIV. It'd be stupid to think otherwise...
Color best buy/me stupid, you're underestimating the amount of fail corporate america has

The thing that sucks about this is the fact that they don't take trade ins for as many games as say Gamestop.

For example nowhere did I find Contact or Geometry Wars for DS on their site.
Damn, Ohio is typically a melting pot for experimental promos.
It's a pain in the ass to get licensed as a pawn shop in Ohio. And that's essentially what sort of license they would need to acquire in order to buy and sell used games.

Extra $20 or just $20, there is still the possibility for some tasty deals here...and I'm off all weekend! I know where I'll be come Sunday morning. I'm sitting on a TON of games, from BBV B1G1, the recent TRU deal, and a huge pawn shop deal I made a week ago, so I've got a LOT of possible fodder.

Right before my wife's B'day and our anniversary, too. Hope she wants something for BB!

Pretty stupid. They fooled me and a bunch of media outlets with that wording. How silly of me to think they'd at least try to 1-up GS with their program.

OK guys, nothing to see here.
I think that makes it pretty clear that 100 titles will have a value of $20.
I'd lean towards this as well but the wording is not 100% clear either way. (Edit: D'oh! I didn't see the follow-up with the response from the Best Buy rep before making my post. But yeah, it could still have potential depending on what those 100 titles are. I'm assuming that some brand new releases will still be worth more that $20 as well, but we'll see).

And wow, for once one of these startup trade-in deals is actually near me. There's all of one Best Buy in my state doing this and it happens to be the one closest to me. That's a shock!

I'll be looking forward to the list on Sunday - hopefully we get it at least a one day advance.

This could put pressure not only on Gamestop but on Amazon/Gazelle as well to get their prices back out of the gutter.

That's the same policy that the online trade program instituted when they got a mass influx of games some of us got cheap/free.

If Splinter Cell makes the list AND they allow the @Gamer coupon to stack with the current online price of $19.99 for the 360 version, I predict I'll probably go get 3 copies and immediately walk over to customer service with them after buying them.;)

Cuz $5 into $20 a copy is still almost enough credit for a new release game.
I think that makes it pretty clear that 100 titles will have a value of $20.
Depending on what titles are eligible, $20 is probably a higher trade in value than you'd get elsewhere. But it really depends on the title.

Hmm, was there a 1 or 3 game limit per coupon with the old ones? I mean, even though it's not the original $32 I was expecting; $15 for any $60 game in the store is a winner in my eyes.

Last set of coupons had a limit of 1, but I don't think anyone tried getting more than 1.
