i have to admit... much of my playtime goes to my ps3.
this isn't a fanboy thread by any means.
i own a wii and have contemplated a 360..
i also own a dsi.

there is this sweet satisfaction i get when hearing the ' chime ' of newly recieved trophies, know what i mean ?

in the past i'd play games to ' complete ' a game and be done with the cartridge. but today, we have trophies.. and achievements, which i feel give the experience of the game a higher satisfaction and use.

well, why not the Wii ?
what went wrong here ?
i hesitate in purchasing another Wii title ( and dsi title ) for the reasonable fact they've yet to satisfy my trophy whoring needs..

what is up nintendo ? old chum ?

I find trophies just a way to get you to buy more games for a particular system and they make you waste your time trying to get points that do nothing. It's basic psychological principles at work, like when dogs hear a bell before dinner. That said, I dislike trophies and find them annoying when a thing flashes on the screen and interrupts the immersion. I wish they were never originally thought up by MS's marketing team.

When 360 originally released and there were rumors that you would be able to use the points for rewards and when there was legitimate competition before people went batshit insane playing horrible games to boost their scores and games differed so widely in how you got points, I did like achievements, but all of that died soon after launch.

oh! please don't misunderstand lol. whatever the marketing schemes up their sleeves, understandable..
but my view(away from theirs)is that i can further enjoy the game ' i actually like ' while achieving these mini games(trophi

I enjoy the Wii being the last place I don't have to worry about gaining fake points. It's too much of a distraction and I feel like achievements/trophies take away from the core of the game (for me). It turns into a job and less about doing something solely for enjoyment - into the need for an accomplishment. And if I don't like a game I don't want to feel pressured earning at least some of the points, instead of just turning it off and leaving it alone. Again though this is just my mentality and my dissatisfaction on leaving things incomplete.

It's good that points ARE there for those that feel that it makes gaming more enjoyable. It just makes me have to try a little harder in ignoring them; which is not that big of a problem. (View this months GameInformer article about Achievements - he says it better than I can).

And the ability to get points with the click of a button from your computer (lots of point hacks out there) just makes the overall score pointless.

even though i have a pretty big gamerscore on xbox, i would never go out of my way to attain an achievement. and i agree, its a marketing scheme, and some of these points require you to do something stupid, like sit in a boat.

now the old games that were built for scores, like galaga, those were scores.

"i hesitate in purchasing another Wii title ( and dsi title ) for the reasonable fact they've yet to satisfy my trophy whoring needs.."

You have problems then and are missing out on some great games.

I like the "ding" the trophies make.

That said, I don't really care. I've only got out of my way to get 2 of 4 Platinums(Ass Creed 2 and The Godfather 2) that I have, both of which I was only like an hour away from Plat. just had to get the last of the trophies, the others I just enjoyed the game.

I don't see how people could trophy whore, I tried with the Wolverine game, but I got so bored of grinding for some trophies I did not want to go through a hard play through and it was the last trophy I needed for Platinum.

Though, I do tend to gravitate towards Ps3/360 games when deciding what game to beat next in my backlog. Right now it's because a friend of mine is hot on my tail of passing my in level.

Err, so the message, who's on and who's off doesn't bother you?

Nope, you can't... the message for who's on and who's off can be avoided though.

That's subjective really... People disliked PoP Forgotten Sands, but I love it. Anyway, the converse holds up too. People avoid "mediocre" games missed out good games too. Without trophies/achievements, I probably miss out a lot of fun games I normally won't touch.

No, he really does not. The wii is a majority ruled sanction of garbage games with garbage controls and garbage graphics, with 0 sense of community with no friends list, achievements/trophies or even passable online. It is basically as bad as it can get. This is 2010, there are now minimum standards of what we gamers expect from our systems to do, and the wii is doesn't do squat.

I like Metroid Other-M, but of course its made by a real gaming developer, not what is usually found on the wii.

When people discuss one of the biggest failures in gaming in the years to come, the Wii is going to be sky high. Not sales failures, but gaming. It sells to people who don't play games, so to them, the wii is all they know. They don't know that real gaming systems with functional online and better everything exists. And they don't care. Good for nintendo to have this crowd, or else they'd be in big trouble.

There are two type of trophy whores....

ONE... Just collect trophies, as long as there's a plink, satisfaction follows.
TWO... Must collect Platinum trophies... Don't mind and don't care the grinding, because that's the way to collect Platinum trophies. This is a new breed of "obsessive" gamer, since the Xbox community doesn't have this award for collecting 100% achievements (now I see why they can't stand the fact that the 100% status gets recalculated when new DLCs are synchronized).

Wii? I welcome the concept of COINS or RUPEES. Now, that would be pretty awesome :) For every 100 coins you get a free man :applause: Or mushroom system (mini, red, green, blue, mega).

Nintendo can opt out the portables since the custom firmwares can hack the scoring system (that's why Sony didn't implement trophies in the PSP games).

Yeah, there's a few games that I've really enjoyed that I only played because of the trophies they offered.

I enjoy trophies because they offer replay value, a sense of accomplishment, and a way to show off your collection that you can take with you. We now have a list of games that we've played, and the accomplishments we've completed therein, whereas in previous generations, other than writing out a list, there was no way for us to show our gaming prowess.

That's basically what the trophy/achievement system is all about :) That's why I pick a good name for my PS3 and Xbox (could have gone with MightyOcelot on PSN too, darn it... But i wanted something different).

The PSN system is more neat, since the trophies collected are experience points, enable you to level up (hence I went with "knight"). In the beginning, I wanted to reach level 99, but now I realized how difficult that is :whistle2:( (let's just say it's impossible).

I don't play games because of achievements, but at the same time if it's a game I enjoy I will try to get 100% of the achievements to show my love of the game and probably because I don't want to put the game down. Another thing about achievements is the fact that it gives me motivation to play a game I have already beaten on a more challenging level of play. Don't get me wrong though if I don't enjoy the game I won't farm the achievements for easy points..I'm not that much of a whore. Sadly though I have only gotten 100% achievements on two games.

Are you referring to the 360 or PS3?

I'm pretty sure you can turn off Achievements on the 360, because I never see them anymore. After they added netflix to the 360 I turned off the friends on/off stuff and havent really seen achievements pop up since.

I also have no recollection of Trophy's popping up or making a noise on my PS3 either, although I'll admit I don't use my PS3 much so maybe I just havent gotten any trophies recently.

I like it more then the 360's because the 360's achievement noise is used for everything.

I could care less about trophies or achievements, if I get them great, if not no big deal. I'm not going to play "Hannah Montana" or some other shovelware just to get points or trophies. Another thing I shake my head at is "people who refuse to play games without trophies or achievements". I never would pass up the opportunity to play a great game just because it didn't have pointless virtual "rewards".

Here ! here are my thoughts exactly..
more replay value, excuses to continue playing.

i grew up on rpg's. everytime the game/story was near the end i'd get kinda sad. maybe not wanting the fun to end holds a huge factor here as well...

My problem with this is that these "accomplishments" are not really of the satisfying sort. With trophies you're not rewarded for being the best so much as you're rewarded for doing the most... it's all grinding, farming, etc. It's like comparing the accomplishment of besting your time on a 5k to the "accomplishment" of seeing how many times in an hour you can refresh a website. "I have more time on my hands than you" has never been much of a bragging right IMO.

There are some Trophies and such that do actually require some skill to obtain, and sometimes I think there can have an enjoyable experiences en route to earning some of them, but I find that most of this is wedged between mountains of "kill 10,000 enemies" or "race 500 laps", and it's certainly not what the trophy whore is aiming for anyways. More often than not when you see someone with a large gamerscore you know the name of the game: easy plat crap, trophy farming matches, and all of those other obessive grinds. I also think there have always been more suitable options than trophies for showing your gaming skills: online leaderboards, high scores, etc. Some say it extends the play time and its fun to grind crap games for trophies... since I don't want Serpentor lecturing me on the subjectiveness of game enjoyment I'll just admit that it's possible that some people might enjoy this whole trophy grind, but I just happen to think this is a front for another obsession in the gaming community.

So no, not really lamenting the lack of kudo points on Nintendo's side.

I didn't know you can turn off the trophy/achievement screen on the top right corner... You can? Well, not that I want to turn them off

 Well said well said

I did find that most trophies/achievements are NOT really test of skills, but rather grinding after grinding (yep, it's one of those "I have more time than you" sort of thing). I guess there's no real rational reasons behind people's gaming motivations

Most people just play the game to enjoy the game (not necessarily good graphic, great storyline, mesmerizing music or even excellent gameplay).

One thing is certain though, adding trophies/achievements to games don't hurt... Maybe people are annoyed by the pop ups, but that can be turned off or simply ignored (not annoyed to the intolerable point IMO). I can see that some people don't like spoilers (i.e. Am I at the end? Or am I close to the final boss?). Sometimes, trophy/achievement pop ups sort of give away how far you're into the game...

Oh yeah, from time to time, I do find the trophy/achievement names funny and I think they do add some values to the games even though I don't plan to get them all. Like Metal Deer Solid in Cabela Outdoor Adventure

I like achievements/trophies if they help extend my playtime through a game. Sometimes I wish there were more trophies for a game, particularly for xbla/psn games. Some of them have so much to do but only offer a handful of e-wards to earn.

Nintendo should definitely add Coins system. 100/100 being the highest for retail games, 20/20 or 40/40 for downloadable titles, depending on price. They should retroactively add coins to virtual console titles. There should be unlockable avatars and themes for collecting all the coins in a game, and they should bring in the different tiers that they use for ClubNintendo. If you earn a 1000 coins in 1 nintendo year, you're a platinum member, 500 gold, 250 silver. Each level gets a different reward.

That is fine. I almost feel like I am working for MS or Sony when I am trying to get achievements/trophies. I think since they both have them now though that if one of them decided to offer you things to spend your points on, obtain deals on stuff, actually unlock stuff that they would sell even more games than their competitor who just gives you a number displayed next to your name. Hopefully that is the upside to them.

It is a pleasant tone. Think about how it would be if it was a baby crying or an alarm clock. I bet they put a helluva lot of time into finding the perfect tone or even tested out a bunch to see what was the most enjoyable for people. Now if you got a friend and you two are competing to the same trophies that actually require skill, I can definitely see the value in that.
Err, so the message, who's on and who's off doesn't bother you?
It's just as annoying to be in the middle of a game and have any distraction take you out of the experience. Like going to the movies and having some person's cell phone ring. That said, I block whatever I can from popping up during a game. I like to be fully immersed in what the makers created. Generally the complete opposite of people who will game and watch tv at the same time or listen to 50 Cent while they play Final Fantasy 13.
