2009-2010 CAG Hockey Team
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgeK5UeVcrY
That's right, folks! It's that time again! Welcome to the official thread for your CheapyD All Stars!

Club History
This will be the team's 3rd season of play, starting with a rollercoaster season in 2008-2009, a rocky start to the 2009-2010 season, but a very strong finish down the stretch that saw the team learn to work together and even eclipse the .500 mark. Looking to continue their progression toward greatness, the 2010-2011 CAG team is sure to be a powerhouse, hopefully having raised some banners by the time the season's over!

How We Play
This is a team for people who wish to compete at a high level and learn the correct way to play their position and hockey in general. Your play will be critiqued, and your contributions to the team will be evaluated. This is not to deride anyone for the way they play, but to improve the team and to give us a better chance of winning games and possibly winning a banner someday.

If you become a detriment to the team, there is a possiblity you could be cut. Not saying this to scare anybody off...but we're looking for smart, skilled, and committed players. If this sounds like something you want to be a part of, please see the information on the CheapyD All Stars below.

When We Play
We have two official Hockey Nights each week. These fall on Tuesday and Friday, and usually start around 8 PM EST and end in the wee hours of the morning. These hockey nights can be filled with ranked games against other EASHL clubs, team practices to improve on basic skills and fundamentals, or even intrasquad games to compete against each other. There are also other random times throughout the week that we play, but Tuesday and Friday are the definite times you can find the team. If you'd like to play, please feel free to join us! If you'd like your information posted on the team roster, please see the "How to Sign Up" section below. See you on the ice!

CheapyD All Stars
***IMPORTANT***
One thing that we strongly recommend is that you do not use the "Be a Pro" or "Action" camera types. While these angles can be exciting for single player modes, they do a poor job of showing you the ice and which teammates may be open (especially players behind you). Since we strive to play strong team hockey and get everyone involved, it makes sense to be able to see the entire zone as you play. The CAG team advises that you use the "Ice", "Classic", or even "Overhead" cameras.

Keep in mind, we have official weekly Hockey Nights on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8PM EST - UNTIL (usually 12-1AM EST), and do play other random times as well. The more time you put into the team, the better we'll be and the more you'll get out of it.

Getting The Most Out of Your Player
The following guide will show you how to best distribute your points and which boosts you should apply based on the cost of raising each attribute. Setting your player up wisely will give you an edge over the competition!

Custom Soundpack
As you may or may not know, NHL 11 allows people to set their own custom playlists for in game events (team intros, goals, penalties, etc.). The great thing about this is you can stream the music from your computer and have the playlists pre-set. All you have to do is assign them to the specific events in game. You can find the pack here, along with full instructions on how to install it.

On the positions: Center was my main position before, but I switched to D later on in the season. Been trying some wing when playing NHL 10 with you guys. You all know this. I'm willing to try anything (that's what she said).

Oh god at the pic for the video.

So, you got off the fence, Alan? haha. It would have been weird had you not gotten NHL this year though. I'm really pumped for the new game. Even if it's not perfect, as long as nothing is fundamentally broken, it should be a lot of fun.

Also, I don't know if this has been posted, but a new developer blog was put up on 8/27 that outlines the new features of the EASHL. I figured I'd just post it in here since it directly relates to the CAG team.

EASHL Improvements for NHL 11

Ncg8jy.jpg

27-August-2010
The EA SPORTS Hockey League has been one of the most popular features in the NHL series since 09. In
NHL 11 I feel that we’ve really raised the bar on the mode with a mix of features that the hardcore guys have been asking for, as well as making it more accessible to those who love NHL but haven’t played before.
joincreateclub-1024x576.jpg

This year in the EASHL you start off as a Free Agent, and are free to play Drop-In Games to get a feel for the game, as well as start to grow your player. You can edit your Pro right from the mode, as well as see the Free Agent leaderboards. Check out the ‘Around the League’ menu to see who the best clubs are in the EASHL. You can get scouted and invited to a club, start your own club, or go look for a club to request to join.
teamstatus-1024x576.jpg

Once on a club, you can see right away one of the big additions: the divisions; the EASHL is divided up into the Elite, Pro, and Amateur divisions. Right on your Club Hub screen you can always see your current division for the season, and an indicator arrow for where your club currently sits within it. The EASHL regular season is all about driving to earn your place in the best division you can in order to qualify for the other huge addition: the playoffs. Finishing the regular season in a division earns you a spot in the playoffs.
regularseasonchampsaward-1024x576.jpg

During the playoff window you need to win four games in a row to be crowned the playoff champs. Playoffs add a whole new level of intensity to the league; there is a more jacked-up crowd, on ice art, and pressure. The playoffs are one and done, so if you lose, you will need to come back strong the next season. The time left in the season/playoffs is shown on your hub so you always know how much time is left. Once the playoffs are over, we have a whole host of trophies to hand out based your season performance:
• EASHL Champs (Elite playoff winner, as well as the best record in the regular season)
• EASHL Runner Up
• EASHL 3rd Place
• Regular Season Champs
• Finish in the top 10 of Elite
• Finish in the top 100 of Elite
• Elite Playoff Winner
• Finishing in the Elite Division
• Pro Playoff Winner
• Finishing in the Pro Division
• Winning the Amateur Playoffs
• and more…
The great thing in NHL 11 is that you don’t have to be the #1 club out of hundreds of thousands to be recognized. Now there are trophies for every club to strive for. Another great addition is the ‘League History’ screen that shows the best clubs for each month. In this screen anyone can view all the previous seasons and see who the top clubs are (or were).
Speaking of top clubs, we’ve also added some glory by introducing banner raising and on-ice art to reward the best of the best. Many of the trophies above will also earn your club bragging right for the following season. Anyone playing in your rink will see who they are dealing with. No longer will you just be another random opponent.
practicedressingroom-1024x576.jpg

For those EASHL fans who have been asking, yes we added two of your most requested features: Club Practice and Jersey Customization. Practice is split up into two modes: you can play a full on scrimmage with 6v6 to simulate a game, or you can have a more skill based practice with no CPU players. For example if you want to practice 2 on 1s with a friend, you can jump into a practice with only a CPU goalie and go on the rush to your heart’s content. Both practice types are a great way to work on your skills and grow your chemistry with your teammates.
teamuniform-1024x576.jpg

Jersey customization is a great addition, meaning now no two teams need to look alike. Similar to our offline creator you have full control over your logo, colors, equipment, etc. to really make your club stand out in the EASHL.
positionselection-1024x576.jpg

We’ve also made it easier to get together with teammates and get into a game. To start off, on the main hub we show your teammates online, who is in a game, etc. We’ve made a new Dressing Room that finally allows you to organize your teammates before the game, pick your desired positions, and then matchup against another team. There are some other subtle touches, like GMs being able to post messages to everyone’s ticker, no matter what game mode they are in (great for organizing a time to play). We’ve even added the ability to only matchup with another team with your club size or your goalie type (human/CPU). If nobody is online, you can always jump into a Drop-In game to get your EASHL fix.
Finally, gameplay and EASHL guru Jason Rupert has completely redone the progression model. There is now a better curve to progression through the mode, as well as a more balanced cost system. This year your position and player types will mean so much more. If you make a playmaker you will have a much more difficult time purchasing hitting for example. While you can still make the players you want to make, the result will be better differentiation among player types, which will make for more balanced gameplay in the EASHL.
accomplishments-1024x576.jpg

There are a lot of other smaller tweaks to the EASHL (45 new team accomplishments for example), but those will be yours to discover when NHL 11 hits the shelves. I can’t wait to see who will take home the first EASHL Championship!
-Garreth

Some of the highlights
*The Elite, Pro, and Amateur divisions are something you place into...and not something you choose. So, we should be competing with similarly skilled teams basically all the time. Each division also has its own trophies and awards
*Apparently there will be team specific arenas this year. That's not confirmed, but it mentions other teams knowing when they're in "your rink"
*Team Practice mode does allow you to take 6 players (or less) and practice against the AI. This is huge for me because it encourages improving as a team, and not just exploiting each other's weaknesses
*Jersey customization appears to be WAY more in depth than any of us gave it credit for. I'm sure it's still not at the "upload your logo" level...but there are a lot of options

I can't wait for this game!

Yeah, I remembered I had a $30gc for gamestop, figured I might as well. Hell, the Avs have to be rated at least a little better this year.

As for team specific areas letting others know who's ice is who's, I'd imagine it's probably just crowd noise.

And I figure this might be beneficial since it's hard to explain this and play at the same time:

p.s.

Any interest in a small single player per team league maybe aim for 10-12 players and each team would play each other 2-3 times?

Those videos are great, Alan! Although, I would have enjoyed them more if you made them yourself, haha. Like "Coach Alan's Corner", with your little hockey rink marker board. That would be epic! Definitely stuff people should make note of. I don't have a lot of technical hockey knowledge, and most of my defensive strategies are rooted in basketball (though zones work essentially the same way), but these types of things will definitely give me a better understanding of where I need to be on any given play. That kind of stuff has me really looking forward to team practice mode.

I'd be all for that. The sooner, the better, though... I will have less time to play once the regular season starts. Not that I won't still be playing then, but I'll be going to all the Ontario Reign home games starting October 23rd, and I've been averaging about 7 Kings home games each of the past 2 seasons.

I've got to PM CravinTacoBell, Captain_Obviou5, KasterDB, and mr_hockey. We need those guys back (amongst others).
Touching video, really sums up last season.
Those were basically all the relevent videos that had anything to do with the CAG team. I found it amusing that 3 separate people have your shot off Alan's ass uploaded though, haha.

haha, see :) In my head, I'm convinced that you exchange sexual favors to get tickets to all these events. I mean, how else could one person do so much? lol

I didn't expect the picture, but I figured you'd say something, LOL. I'm actually home a lot of nights. I explained my increased social activity over the past couple months in the MLB league thread.

I've actually been treated for social anxiety and used to take medication for it... it's just that I'm comfortable around certain people/groups of friends- acting as I do with you guys. I'm much more quiet around a majority of people, and at hockey games and wrestling shows, I'm just an anonymous face in a crowd of 6,000-ish (Reign), 18,118 (Kings), or between 20,000-72,000 for wrestling shows.

I'm able to do this stuff because I don't have many expenses, I live 60 miles from LA where all kinds of events take place, and I have some connections with the right people. As far as the Reign games go, a friend of mine has been a season ticket holder since the team formed (2008) and he purchased 2 seats. I go for free to those games. I could not even afford my own season tickets at the moment, if I had to pay for them.

EDIT: Turns out the draft is at 8 P.M. Pacific. I thought it was set for 8 P.M. Central- Devin's time zone. I guess that means I won't be able to get on NHL right after the Packers game after all.

I know, homie. You don't have to explain yourself to me. I'm just razzin ya ;) (see Magic, you're not the only one who gets it, hahaha). I'm kinda the opposite (or maybe the same, depending on how you look at it). I think most people are fucktards and can't stand being around them, which is why I don't go out. Even friends I've had for awhile tend to be flakey and have their own lives to live, so with Xbox Live, it's nice to be able to be "social" from the comforts of my own home. At the end of the day, whatever makes your dick hard! lol

I'm the same way. I have a small group of friends that I hang out with regularly here in California. Most of my good friends are in Illinois. Too many people- friends or otherwise- have screwed me over or let me down, so that coupled with the anxiety means I stay home a lot (and my other medical problems exacerbated that).

I'm totally bipolar about social activity. Sometimes, I won't be home for several days. Other times, I won't leave my property (I do go outside, at least!) for days at a time.

As for what makes my dick hard- the lesbo stuff between Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning in The Runaways. ;)

Awesome that we've got 7 people signed up already! I just hope we get a lot who show up regularly. Hopefully having a second hockey night during the week will make a difference for people who weren't available on Fridays.

hey hey hey... can't wait.

Destrovega, don't know my new skater name yet. Left Wing and I can try to play more center if needed. I thought I did alright last week.

I'll be there the first Tuesday and have to miss the next Friday. I am getting married in 4 weeks, it will be a bit bumpy until Oct. 22nd.

very excited to play hockey

All right, #28 holds too many bad memories, so does #2, time to combine them to be at my worst! But seriously, I don't know when I'll be starting, I could end up getting the game any time this month, so I'll let you guys know when I do.

You just tell her that Friday Night is hockey night, and if she doesn't like that well, you can get penalties that last for five minutes for fighting. I think you get my drift.

I can't find my old pic of the Miss USA and Penalty Box with Tissues picture dang it.

Eh, it looked like it crossed, the guys on the other team said it crossed. Whatever, everyone gets shots like that, don't they?

anyways, if we are playing tonight, I can only hope that Nate, Alan, and Darktower decide to change their names back.

And we can only hope that Michael Richards doesn't decide to show up again. Not sure if you realize this, but a lot of people were seriously offended by that outburst. It's one thing to talk shit or call somebody a jackass, but that kinda crossed a line. Just something to think about.

HA HA HA HA! Man those bring back some Good memories. Is anybody up for playing tonight? Seriously, I will rent it if anybody wants to get a game going tonight only, and maybe sunday night as well.

You know guys, now that last week has been brought up a couple times to me, I finally forced myself to think about it. Alright, it's not the first time I've fought you guys, but it was the farthest I've ever gone. I'm sorry that I offended you guys, and I hope it's not too late to try to put it behind us and minimize the impact from it.

I don't really expect any of you to care, and I don't blame you, but don't let it affect the way we play tonight. If you want to bitch at me, do it after the games, not in the middle when I can't leave.

So, who is playing tonight's final NHL 10 game? Gary Russell want's to make an appearance and send off before he goes to the new arena Monday Night/ Tuesday Morning

Ooh...this excites me! Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. This is our last official NHL 10 CAG Hockey Night (well, unless the EA servers get overloaded on Tuesday and crash...which isn't unheard of). It will be pretty crazy switching to 11 and feeling like everybody is moving at half speed though. Going from a legend card, 86 speed guy in 10 to a Amateur card, 70 speed guy in 11 is going to SUCK, haha.

So in the final night in the CAG arena, Gary Russell scored 2 slap shot goals near the blue, went 1/1 in fighting and had 15 penalty minutes!! Good night I would say!!

Yeah, I had a pretty good time last night. The only distinction I think needs to be made is playing for shits and giggles vs. playing to win. I know we all enjoy joking around and talking about different stuff, but if it starts to take away from the focus of playing hockey, you have to question why you're playing. I mean, we could all play Uno and do the same thing.

I think a lot of it comes with experience though. And over the past couple weeks, we've had several people come back to the game after not having played in a long time, so it wasn't a big deal. But that's why I hope with NHL 11, having two nights a week will have people playing more often. I can say for me, with as many OTP games as I've played, just goofing off for 4 hours two nights a week won't hold my interest very long. I hope everybody else has this same desire to be a good team as well.

Yeah, as I said, I only got on to play because I had a shitty day and figured talking to/playing with you guys would cheer me up. I know I sucked, especially after doing pretty well the night before.

No, don't feel bad at all guys. Last night was just the final NHL 10 hockey night, and I know people are getting reacquainted with the game, and it's not like our record matters anyway. So, just playing and having a good time was great. I just really think we can make a run for at least one of the Amateur division banners if we try to take things seriously in NHL 11.

I know Alan and myself put in a lot of time in NHL 10 learning how to defend cheap tactics that other teams use, and for the most part, we did learn how to stop them (my favorite moments were when we made glitching teams quit...there's really not a more satisfying feeling playing the game than that). So, with 11, if more people take things seriously and learn how to shut teams down, I guarantee we win at least 60% of our games.

I see a lot of skill in pretty much every person that plays with the CAG team, and there's really nobody who flat out "sucks". It's just a matter of keeping your skills sharp and being able to adjust to how the other team is playing. I'm excited about the new game. It will put everybody back to square one and give everyone a chance to start fresh...but with 2 years of OTP experience under their belts. We can make some good things happen.

New to the league, as I mentioned in the demo thread I play a lot with my wife online vs. Now we have to adjust to OTP.

We'll try to make it on Friday nights as much as possible but with both of us working we don't get home until half the hockey night is over... and with a toddler at home it'll be tough. We'd like to jump in whenever we're available and a spot needs to be filled.

Captain Obvious says he's going to try to join us on Tuesday. :) Oh, and Venom, if anyone knows him from the Madden league. Well, Gary knows him from our days at another forum.

This fuckin' demo, guys... I love it, but I can't get past the semifinals of the Ultimate Team tournament. I have to restart the tournament, then my players' contracts expire, then I have to exit the mode and remake *team name censored so no one takes it*. I just want that bonus card pack for the full game.

azngtlman, I am in California as well, so I am available to play later than some people who are in other time zones. I'd be glad to team up with you, and I'm sure other will be on later, especially for the first week (probably more than 1 week, but there is that one game coming out on the 14th... something Reach, I think).

Guys, I've joked with some of you about how I could make a ton of money filling in for the guy who used to be in Boyz II Men who does the spoken word interlude parts, as long as no one saw what I looked like. Now, I'm listening to some of heir music right now, and I thought about that.

Does this not sound similar to my voice? First 3 lines spoken, and then interlude at 3:36:

Guys, I haven't played much Online Team Play, but I would like to play (or try to play as Fridays are my "real" hockey league night")

I just remembered a piece of conversation that came up when Alan (moojuiced), Magicking, and myself were playing last night. Magic was wondering why my shots always seem to hit him in the ass as he stands in front of the net. This is what followed:

Magicking: "Well, why don't I turn around and you can hit me in the nuts?"
n8rocker82: "That sounds good."
Magicking: "But we won't win if you hit me in the nuts."
In swoops Alan, not missing a beat
moojuiced: "We ALL win if he hits you in the nuts."
n8rocker82: *fighting back laughter* "Yeah, Darwin wins if I hit you in the nuts."
Magicking: "Ahhhh...dammit!"

LOL, I had to share that because that makes me laugh again even now. Magic set it on a tee for him, and Alan knocked it out of the park. Well played, sir. Well played, indeed.

And yes, Matt, you sound exactly like Michael McCrary. It's even funnier now that I listen to that actually thinking about it, haha.

^hilarious.

but if Magic wants to deflect shots, you kind of have to be moving slowly towards the net or sort of stand sideways, that's what works for me anyway.

Wish the game was out today!

What was going on in OTP Friday night? just a bunch of goofing around?
