The "WWF No Mercy Memorial Wrestling Thread" that isn't actually a Memorial Thread

Best wrestling game ever.

Kind of sad since it has been 10 years since it was released.

Def Jam: Fight For NY was also fantastic.

No Mercy was awesome, especially when games that came after it took steps backward away from what No Mercy accomplished. I think the SvR series is back on track though with the 2010 version and possibly the 2011 one which drops today.

The only game that comes close to touching No Mercy is Smackdown! Here Comes The Pain.

Too bad AKI never got a shot to work on another legit wrestling game after NM. And know, the first two Def Jam games don't count, even though they were fantastic in their own rights.

Here Comes the Pain was probably the best Smackdown game in the series! Although I do love SvR 2006 on PS2, HCTP was perfect in every way!

I sort of missed out on No Mercy. I got Wrestlemania 2000 for Christmas in '99, and played the shit out of it for a year or two. God, I love that game.

I finally got around to buying a copy of No Mercy from ebay a few years ago, but I've only played it a couple times. I can tell it's good. I just need to put in some more time with it.

Some of my other favorites: WWF Wrestlemania Challenge (NES), WWF Royal Rumble (SNES), WCW/NWO Revenge (N64), WCW World Tour (N64), Fire Pro Returns, and SvR 2006.

I've got both Day of Reckoning games for Gamecube, but I've not touched either one. I've heard they're similar to WM2000/No Mercy. Any truth to this?

I just remembered, I never unlocked the last character "Ho" due to a glitch with the game that would erase my progress. Man, its been forever since I played WWF No Mercy. A new wrestling game using the Aki engine would be a definite purchase for me, I tried other wrestling games since then, but I haven't bought a wrestling game since No Mercy, none of them seemed worth getting. Def Jam was a great game too... before Icon.

I probably just imagined hearing No Mercy would be re-released on Wii Virtual Console, but updated with newer wrestlers and moves a few years back. Did anyone else remember hearing that? That would've been awesome.

I just wanna front page post that TNA is garbage as hell

Just in case someone new to wrestling reads this thread

Have you guys followed the No Mercy modding community at all?

I haven't too much, but some of the things they've done to the game are just amazing.

Such an awesome game OP, thanks for the fond memories. Another one I loved back then, was WCW/NWO Revenge. Good times, on the 64 indeed.

I played the shit out of wCw vs nWo Revenge.

I will be playing the shit out of SvR 11 when it gets here in the mail.

I'm also hoping Scorch drops some more wrestling themes for us this year...

To me, DoR 2 is the closest thing since No Mercy. Gameplay was almost exactly the same and just like NM, winning triple threats and fatal 4 way matches were hard as hell to win. Only thing I didnt like about that game was creating characters took a LONG time. Each time you create a part it takes like 20 seconds to load the selection, another 20 seconds to go back to the menu, etc. But if you loved No Mercy, I say you should definitely try out DoR 2.

Cant wait to pick up SvR 11 later today.

Absolutely, what are you looking for? I haven't been keeping up with recent stuff so most of my themes are 2002 and prior. I have a TON of themes from the 90's though.. ECW and WCW as well. I have several production themes (themes they use in promo videos) as well. If it's a recent request.. no promises but I'll do what I can.

Have you found a decent version of Ted Dibiase's new one? I think its the only one out of the in game roster that's outdated.

I don't, I'll have to check for it.

I'm confused - WWE Universe mode is little more than SmackDown 2's season mode without the ability to play a specific superstar. You can choose any superstar in any match, though. I don't know how/when cutscenes can occur.

I started RTWM with Christian. Nice touch with the TV adding "Welcome to ECW!" and a quick story on the TV, but unfortunately, the same sound blurb repeats every time you walk by it. Walking backstage is clunky but kinda neat.

Running feels super slow. I don't know why. It feels like Lucha Libre slow. I guess I'll get used to it.. it just doesn't feel like older versions.

Nice juxtaposition a friend pointed out:

Smackdown plug: The Undertaker has been buried alive and his soul has been taken. Kane condemns his half brother to darkness with his funeral this Friday.

Next week: Pee Wee Herman guest stars on Raw!

WWE Universe mode is weird. I guess I get to play as whoever I want. Dunno how I'll see cutscenes since I sim everything. Won the title with Orton by DDTing Trips off the top rope onto the stairs. It was pretty awesome. I love the new weapon interactions.

Maybe once Christian gets back from his injury they will have an Egde/Christian reunion since thats in the game this year. Would be good to see them run roughshod over the tag team division that doesnt exist in the E these days.

My brother and 2 cousins and I already player N64 games every Friday/Saturday nights back in the day when we were younger. Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye 007, Bomberman 64, and of course, WCW vs. nWo: World Tour, WCW/nWo Revenge, WWF Wrestlemania 2000, and WWF No Mercy.

Too bad we never played No Mercy as much since we had an early copy with the stupid data erasing glitch.

AKI is the shit. I remember even begging my mom to buy me VPW2 for my birthday one year. It ended up costing like $114 to order it from Japan at the time, and I had to cut the plastic corners off the cartridge to play it on my Nintendo 64, since I didn't have a Japanese N64 or the adapter that was out there to allow import titles to play on US 64 systems.

The $114 price tag for one game pretty much nixed my birthday/Christmas gifts for years to come.

But it was worth it wasn't it? :)

Indeed. I loved that game so fucking much, even though I couldn't read a single damn thing on the menu screens. lol

Honestly, Japanese is NOT that hard to learn. I bought a "Learn Japanese" CD Rom program from Costco and after about a year of studying it (along with a few other study aides I bought from Hastings books) I'm now able to read it on a pretty high level I think.

Speaking it, on the other hand... forget about it. Even when I try to speak it using as generic, generalizing terms as possible, I still can't carry a conversation in it.

But if you want to play imported games it's the way to go.

What's the exact name of this CD?

From the Twitter:

@LuchaLibreUSA
Lucha Libre USA’s Masked Warriors TV series moves to a new home at the The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Albuquerque for its second season on MTV

I guess it does continue.

Yeah, I was like 15, so learning Japanese was not even on my radar.

The Smackdown VS. Raw series could go on for 100 years and it still wouldn't compare to the AKI Nintendo 64 Pro Wrestling games. I swear, when I have a kid he/she is never going to watch or play anything I didn't grow up with. No YuGiOh! You'll watch Sonic SatAM and play WCW VS. NWO: World Tour and like it!:lol::lol:

Has anyone here ever managed to unlock the Ho in No Mercy?

Yeah i would like some impressions for the new SvR before i am going to pick that up. i didnt really enjoy SvR 10 but hoping that Universe mode is the real deal.

I remember my overwhelming emotion of simultaneous confusion/rage/sadness that occurred the first time the No Mercy battery save quit on me and I lost all my unlocks and CAWs. Still good times.

Also, WrestleFest. That's all I need to say.

I did. after weeks & weeks of grinding. I also played out every variation in story mode . . . FOR FUN. Not for achievements, not for an unlock-able. Just because I loved NM so damn much.

SECRET: I just lately figured out that I can have longer matches in the N64 AKI WCW games by decreasing the handicap bar that appears before the match. Doesn't take me long!:lol::lol:

We bought a Wrestlefest arcade cabinet for a friend's dorm room at Bowling Green. His RA agreed to help us set it up if we let him play every now and then.

Best $200 on CL ever spent.

Batista was right all along! He DOES love hugging fat chicks!

I had no idea that No Mercy had a modding community. I'll have to check that out.

EDIT: Good god, Vince is filing a lawsuit against the Connecticut Secretary of the State because they're not letting voters wear WWE merch.

EDIT 2 (Electric Boogaloo): I'm way late to this story it seems. They've settled, and the CeNation is allowed to let their colors shine.

Any initial semi-reviews on SVR 2011 from people that own it? My friend is playing it currently and won't respond to my messages. A good sign i hope?

I am cautiously optimistic that the Universe mode will make my year - I played the Smackdown 2 never-ending season mode til every single wrestler would have died of old age (like 2080). Please don't suck! Fingers crossed!

If you liked that season mode, that's pretty much what you're getting here with feuds and all. You can sim an entire card, you can play individual matches.. whatever you wanna do. Initially, I skipped all matches until PPV's where I'd jump in and help the underdog win. Cutscenes and everything happen in the mode as well. It's pretty cool. Very, very simplistic, but cool.

As someone who missed the shit out of GM Mode, I'm happy to have the new Universe thing.

I've seen a ton of people knocking it, but I've been enjoying the hell out of 2011.
