I'm never selling or trading in my games again

PsyClerk

CAGiversary!
I've been in a retro mood lately and have been looking at a lot of older games. I've gotten far enough in time to start looking at old PSOne games, and damn have I made some boneheaded decisions in the past. I've owned so many games that would fetch a tidy sum today. Not just PSOne but all systems since the Atari. I had about 60 Atari games that I sold for $50 years ago, including the actual system, a touchpad and two official working paddles.

On the 16-bit front, I had a Genesis/32X/Sega CD system with several decent games. I paid maybe $50 total for everything (including games), and would gladly pay $50 to get it all back. Same for the Super NES. I had an original release Super Metroid (not the Player's Choice re-release) that was in perfect condition, along with mint condition box and manual. Also had Secret of Mana in perfect condition, nearly all my games were in the same shape as they were when they first came out of the box. Final Fantasy III, Mario Paint with mouse and mousepad...all sold for pennies on the dollar. I shudder to look at their value today.

I bring this up because, as I mentioned before, I'm looking into some of the older PSOne games. I used to own an original release Final Fantasy Tactics. All the Battle Arena Toshinden games. X-Com UFO Defense. All the King's Field games. Tactics Ogre. Star Ocean. Suikoden (first one). Discworld. Persona. Most bought for less than retail thanks to my video store connection. All traded in for a pittance to buy newer games eventually. I'm going back trying to find some of these games and I've only gotten a few for cheap (Jumping Flash 1+2, and all the King's Field games).

So I've learned my lesson. No more trading in to EB or whoever. No more trading period. No more selling games. No matter how crappy the game, when it gets into my library, it'll be there to stay.

I share the same attitude towards my games. I sold something once, my sega cd. As soon as I did I regretted it.

I just took the opposite attitude. I used to NEVER sell or trade games, but now I think trading is a good way to get the games you want, and THEN you get the crappy games. Do the good way.

I feel your pain. I had Shining Force 3 and Panzer Dragoon Saga for the Saturn and I may as well have thrown them in the garbage for what I got. I too had Tactics Ogre and an original release Final Fantasy Tactics. I also had the import Dungeons and Dragons Collection for the Saturn, the Nightstalker's collection and a bunch of toher stuff I don't even want to think about.

The big thing for me now if that I am not buying games at full price so I don't feel like I need to get something back after I am finished with them. Thanks in large part to this site, I am buiuying cheap, so if I never sell, I still get my money's worth.

I sold a ton of games around 2 years ago. Got rid of my NES, Genesis, 32X, and Saturn. The only one I really miss is the Saturn, though - every now and again I have a longing for my old Dracula X import or Panzer Dragoon Saga...
Which is why I'm never selling again. And I'm not big on trading/trading in...unless the game is really really shitty.

I'm with you guys/gals. I have only sold one game from my collection. That was the highly overrated and overvalued, Dungeons and Dragons Collection on Sega Saturn. I got $146 for it. Too much to turn down. As far as trading. I've never traded a game I bought to keep, but I often trade those crappy games that I find on sale for $5 to $10. I love building up a ton of crappy games and then visiting all the EB's in my area during the trade-in specials.

I totally agree with the first post...I had all of the systems at one time or another growing up (all originals, bought new, most at or soon after release)...Sega Master System, NES, Genesis, SNES, Sega CD, Saturn, PS1, PS2, XBox, Gamecube, GBA, and Gamegear. Luckily, I never sold and still have my original Saturn, PS2, XBox, Gamecube, and GBA. However I, at one time or another, sold all the others in order to purchase something newer. I guess you have to do that sort of thing when you are younger and only get cash for birthdays and Christmas, but man what a pain. Over the past 3 or 4 years I have been re-acquiring the aforementioned sold systems. I have accomplished my goal, but it sure as heck wasn't cheap! Especially because most the of the systems I re-acquired came in original, factory new condition.

Oh yeah, and I didn't even mention the fact that I'm (still) trying to re-acquire many of the games I used to own. At least I have my Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining Force 3, and Burning Rangers back once again!!!

I still get urge to sell or trade my current games for something new, but I eventually come to the conclusion that it is not worth it...because 5 years from now I'll want them back and have to pay a ridiculous amount of money to do it!

Oh well, just my two cents...

I agree. I might sell a game, but I would never trade it in. EBgames/Gamestop/Funcoland, all stick it to ya when you trade in. If I buy it, I keep it.

I used to sell off some of my NES games "back" in the day but ended up buying most of them again a few years later after regretting it. So the 16 bit era and on I have kept EVERYTHING (with the exception of Arrow FLash on the Sega Genesis... sigh). So yes, I still have my original Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Dragon Force, Albert Odyssey, Suikoden II, Magic Knight Rayearth, Final Fantasy Tactics, Alundra and more... there are some games that I have regretted NOT buying but I seem to have a good knack for picking those that will be worth something someday... once I've bought a game, it becomes part of my collection, and we shall not be parted.

I haven't sold ANYTHING because I was afraid I'd end up regretting it, like some of you have.

I've still got every game I've ever bought, with the exception of my 2600, which seems to have vanished somewhere in my basement. That stinks, but the fact that I've still got everything else is a great consolation... :D

yeah, I've never sold my stuff. I mean some places give you a buck for a game. What am I going to do with a buck?, I can't even buy a soda for that. I'll keep my old sports games, thank you very much.

I never want to trade games again either. I basically made that mistake one too many times. I would dump one generation for the next. I got rid of gem collections for the Genesis, Sega CD, SNES and PSone. Though honestly I have a much better PSone collection now through collecting/rebuying than I ever did when the system was first out. I don't miss any of my 16 bit games with the exception of the Japanese Sonic CD and those of you that know the differences between the U.S. and Japanese one can feel my pain.

What caused me to NEVER sell games again was the loss of my Dreamcast to get an Xbox. I parted with 30 somthing games for like $375? I had the BBA for it and just about every worthwhile U.S. game released. I miss my DC and would still play it.

Now for me my collection is over 210+ games for PS2/one, Xbox and GameCube. I've spent hundreds of hours scouring for deals and saved thousands of dollars. To me... it's my passion like collecting baseball cards are for some adults, I'll never sell again. I used to be about the latest and greatest and still am come 4th quarter but now my eye is on the collection value. I'll never be first in line for an EA game again but I will be scarfing up La Pucelle Tactics and every strategy guide I can get on release day so I can hose everyone in 6 months for $75 a pop  .

Oh, I'm not 100% immune to trading in games.... I can tell you that Enter the Matrix and LOTOR: TTT were traded in because I don't want that licensed shit anywhere near the majority of games I own.

I realized this problem when I traded in 50 NES games for $1 apiece to get Mario Party for the N64.

Ever since then I've always kept games that I considered classics, to build up a solid collection of games. Thank god it only took some NES games and not my DC/N64 collection.

I just looked at the prices for Discworld on Half.com and eBay. I had that game in perfect condition...

Heh. I and my brother (4 years older than me) used to both collect NES, SNES, Genesis, etc. games. When I was about 10 or so, my brother offered to buy everything I owned from me for 150 bucks. (Man, that seemed like a crapload at the time) This included all the good stuff (even all 4 Dragon Warriors, complete in box!), but I did it anyway because I wanted to buy new N64 and PSX games instead. :x Needless to say, I've regretted this ever since.

I've thought about selling off all of my older games and systems from time to time, but so far haven't. I don't know that I have anything particularly rare or valuable, but if I sold off everything it might add up to a nice bit of cash. My wife and I are both packrats who keep everything (not just games), so every now and then we get the urge to just clear out lots of old stuff so we have room to walk around and sit down in our house.

I've got all my old Genesis, N64, DC stuff. Anything older than that I handed down to my younger brother years ago. I keep all my stuff in like-new condition, so I'm sure I could sell it somewhere. I think my son would be pissed at me if I ever just cleared it all out, though, because he loves a lot of those older games, too.

Some day I'll check what my games are going for on ebay, but I guess there's no rush. I agree that EB is not the way to go, though. No sense parting with games for next to nothing.

i agree. i too have every game i ever owned. only time i got rid of a game was when i lost pocket bomberman on a plane. i recently replaced it though, so now i have my entire, original collection. and i will never get rid of any.

I'm trying to remember which version I have, Saturn or PSX.
I'm trying to remember which version I have, Saturn or PSX.
The PSX versions are going for fairly high prices, at least on Half.com. The first game is selling for $50 and the second game for $40. EBay seems a little more reasonable, but still...wish I hadn't sold that one.

I trade games here and at TGN, but those are generally games that I know I won't regret trading. I have made a few trades I regret, but since they are mainly ones I can still find for a good price, I don't regret it too much. I only trade in games at EB if I can't stand the game, and couldn't trade it away after trying for months *cough cough true crime cough cough*, although I did get $22 for it.

I learned the same lession! I don't trade in any more either! Besides the fact they rip you a new one evry time you do! If I get rid of my games i'll trade here or sell on ebay! You get a lot more for them.

Yeah I think something is missing in this topic.

Selling your games like a noob when you are young only to want them back years later is all part of the fun. If you NEVER sell your games I bet they would just sit in a closet and when you are in a game store you mention to your friends.."hey I think I still have that game somewhere in my closet" yet you will NEVER take it out to play.

If you sell your games...then want them back (highly likely) then the fun begins. The fun for MANY collectors, as discussed often, is in finding those rare deals. There is no fun if they are in a dusty box under your xmas decorations.

...says the guy who runs the used game store.

Personally, I'd still rather have the game in the first place than to have to hunt it down again. In any case, it doesn't matter...

When I go off for college, I'll probably be leaving my NES, Genesis, and N64 collections...only a few PC games and my GBA/GB will end up making the trip. Even if I do take the consoles with me (not likely), I'd still have to hunt down games that I can't take - we have a fair share that belong to (a) my sister or (b) the family in general.

I make sure that if I'm gonna trade something, that it's something I KNOW I'm never gonna play again, or at the very least, something that if I DID get the urge to play it again, I could pick it up for a reasonable price. I have a DAMN nice collection of Saturn Imports, and a lot of good stuff for the classic systems that I would never part with

Defender has a very good point. However, there are a few games that I have owned then gotten rid of that are now so expensive, I wouldn't consider buying them again. (Suikoden, I'm lookin' at you!) I'll never spend more than $50 on a game. And since I've been reading CAG, I'll never spend $50 on a game without getting some sort of rebate/bonus in return :D

I can't believe it when I see people getting ripped off in trade-ins at Gamestop. I have sold off some of my stuff . . . on ebay and once in a newspaper ad.

I don't really have regrets though . . . I keep the stuff that I really enjoy. Plus, I barely have time to really go back . . . I can't even keep up with the new stuff.

i sold all my super nintendo and sega genesis stuff (well i still have a few and a genesis) but i never missed them. the fact is that i dont have any kind of an income, i have to sell the old to bring in the new and im not gaming for the collection. maybe when im older (have my own job) i wont need to sell the old games but not now. besides i dont think those games wouldve brought up squat even in the future, i always threw out boxes and manuals as soon as i ripped the packaging and didnt take much care of the game (had to blow in them till my face turned red).

you are right. Mainly I only trade away stuff that no longer interests me for stuff I want.

Ex. I got rid of Metal Gear a while ago and recently reacquired it for 2.50. While I had it , I never even played it, but since I got it again I played it for like 3 days straight.

I sold my NES and about 40 games last year. I sold my Coleco vision and 20 games, my SNES with 14 games, and the worst: I sold my Turbografx16 and 16 games for $100 on ebay 2 years ago. I regret it frequently. I REALLY regret selling the TG16 because it's so hard to come by now.

Even though I don't have near enough time to play my genesis, N64, atari7800, PS2, gamecube games or near enough room to keep them all, I'll never sell a system or collection ever again.
