Ys I & II Chronicles

I would love to hear opinions on this. I've been wanting to know if I should get this version or the one on DS.

I played through Ys I on the PSP release over the past couple days. It's pretty good. It's got the unique early Ys style of combat, so keep that in mind, but it's a lot of fun.

Blackout, don't bother with the one on the DS. They royally screwed the controls. Sword slash mode flat-out doesn't work, and if you want to play the game with the classic combat system, you're forced to use the stylus and the touchscreen. It's dumb as bricks, and Falcom, the original creators of the games, got so ticked off at the company that made the DS version that they themselves made a definitive PSP version.

Wow, that sounds terrible. It's good to hear the original company made the PSP version. Looks like I'm going with that one.

My copy shipped yesterday (24th), I probably won't have it until next week. I'm almost at the end of Oath in Felghana. Man these games are great. I never had a Turbo Graphix, so I never got to play through the first Ys. My friend had one and I played it for a little bit. So, are new Ys games still being made nowadays?

I guess that explains why a used version with the additional box, manual and CD soundtrack was at my local gamestop for 9.99.

Ys Seven came out in Japan in 2009. It wasn't translated until last year, though.

Ys games went on sort of a hiatus for a while, but they came back with Ark of Napishtim in 2003. Then Oath in Felghana in 2005 (which is a remake of Ys 3), and Ys Origin in 2007.

Of course AoN got PS2 and PSP ports and got released in America in 2005 (avoid the PSP port) and Oath in Felghana got its American PSP release last year. Origin's only release is on the PC and only in Japan.

It's not unrealistic to think that the next Ys game is coming within the next few years. I hope the next two are remakes of Ys 4 and 5. Those games are Japan-only, and only 4 got English patched. I heard 5 sucks, but an Oath in Felghana caliber remake could save it.

Ah cool. I really liked Seven's controls. Felghana's is good now that I got the hang of it. If 4 and 5 can be redone in a similar fashion to Felghana and/or Seven, I'd be happy to play them.
Dude this thing is short. I'm about 3 hours in and heading off to the last dungeon in Ys I.
I was surprised how quickly I breezed through I, too. II took a bit more time, though.

But the last dungeon in I is a doozie.

I should be getting my copy today from Amazon's Super Slow Shipping. Playing through Felghana again on HARD with NG+ holy crap it's super easy! Some of the bosses take like 1 or 2 hits
Been meaing to say WTF is with health potions in this game? You can't use them during boss fights! Why the heck have them?
They're to help you get through dungeons. The game's super hardcore. Be good or be dead.

I thought I read someone in this thread talking about some alternate sword controls? I don't care for the "bump" system. I've looked in the manual and in the options, and I don't know how to switch it.

I don't think there is.

On that note I'm stuck. I can't get into the final tower.

I have all the Silver equipment, I have 3 books of Ys, I've talked to Feena at the dock, and I rescued Lutu from the monsters and got him back to his wife.

The old lady will read the 3 books for me but not direct me to the thieves. What am I missing?
I want this game. Hopefully Amazon hits it for $20 soon.
Well it is $29 for 2 games and a CD. I could understand holding out for $15, but just $9? I will admit though, I really enjoyed Seven and Felghana more so far. But I think it's worth the money--especially if it does well enough to justify bring the other 2 or 3 games to us.

Normally I would have this already in my PSP but considering that I have >10 RPG's to play on the PSP alone and Xenogears and Vagrant Story were just released, I'm in no hurry to get another game, especially an RPG.

Yeah, I can understand that. i'm kind of getting RPG'd out myself.

There are no alternate sword controls in the PSP version. The alternate controls are in the DS version, but they make absolutely no sense and are completely useless. The DS port is just bad all around. Avoid it.

Yeah, I am done with Wii and DS games. I'm sick of the shitty graphics and the non-widescreen of the DS.

Finally beat Ys 1 on NORMAL; man was that brutal. The game was fairly easy and then boom, the last guy was next to impossible.

Here is my strategy:

Silver armor, shield, and sword, use the ring that halves your damage. Start off by running around the perimeter of the platform, and go the opposite way Dark Fact is going. Once you hit him, try to get under him and go the same way he's going. You'll end up hitting him multiple times, as you run the same way, taking out the floor as you go along. This is the only way I could manage to beat him w/o getting trapped in a corner or something. If you run around and try to hit him once, you won't be able to kill him because you can't score enough hits without running out of space. I tried dozens of times to just run around the edge and try to make my way into the center, but it doesn't work. The only way you are able to hit him enough is to run with him in the same pattern and do your best to avoid the fireballs. Even with this strategy, it's all about luck.

I think the trailer on Amazon just sold me on this...cracked me up.

I've head of the game(s) before but never really looked into them.

Just finished Ys I. Last boss was much much easier then that bat boss in the mine, that thing was brutal.

Started Ys II, been running around in a mine (on that note) for about an hour, Level 13 already looking for a dumb flower.
