Hey-hey what can I do? Make beats with my iPhone. And you?

There are a ton of music-related apps on iPhone; and while some are fun, few are functional.
I'd really like to find one that makes it easy/intuitive to put together some original beats for a few songs I'm kicking around.

I just checked out Beatmaker, which I've owned for a long-ass time but only recently re-synched. It's pretty damn complicated, and the closest I've come to making anything is loading some sample pads, then recording while I tap on the group of 16. Ever look at the PDF manual? It's huge!

Everyday Looper is novel, but it's only 4 tracks and has to be done through the mic. Kinda clunky, too.

Matrix Music Pad is more a toy than a tool, I've found.

I have a few drum apps that are okay, but they sound too artificial to really be usable.

Now, I know there are kick-ass beat-making apps for iPad, but I don't have one of those. Sure could use the extra screen space, though. You win this round, Gorrilaz!

How about you guys? Is there anything you've found works well, or should I just give up on the idea of making decent beats with my iPhone, and stick with computer programs?
