Alrighty angry Netflix customers, Blockbuster is welcoming you with open arms and new plans. I know this has been discussed in Netflix threads under bluray/dvd section and but I believe this deserves it's own thread.

1 Disc $9.99 includes dvds, blurays and games! 30 month trial plus now unlimited in store exchanges. This used to be around $12 or $13 with 5 limited exchanges if I am not mistaken. or 2 Disc for $14.99 with same rules.

Edit: Called customer service and apparently you have to pay for in store exchanges when it comes to games, as some people have mentioned. Movies are unlimited with no added fees.

WARNING: Their game availability is not even close to gamefly. Its been my experience its impossible to get anything released within the last few months

Whoa, unlimited games and Blu-rays at no extra fee? I have two B&M stores within walking distance. I might have to switch, or at least drop my disc plan from Netflix before September.
Do you get unlimited game exchanges in store too, or is it just movies?
Yep so it seems which I am switching from Netflix. Instant streaming is shit now, already all the shows I wanted so I have no desire to stay with them.

After going over the FAQ, it doesn't look like it.

Blockbuster By Mail plans include 5 in-store exchanges per billing cycle.

Damn! Might still be worth it to me. NCAA Football 12 is in-stock close to me...

Oh and for you 3d people. Blockbuster TA is jumping into that market. They have the demo type movies right now and on their forums reps said that they want to fill the "3d niche" since no one else is entering that market (guess they are learning from their past mistakes of not entering the rental kiosk until very late in the game)

I believe that is old information. Someone was discussing that on Slickdeals but if you click on the link it tells you unlimited in store exchanges. My friend has that plan and apparently he was able to exchange games in-store, guess it also depends on the managers.

i hope so. My local bbv has a ton of games im not willing to purchase yet and walking down the street is more convenient than waiting for mail.

Oh, I didn't even notice that it says "Unlimited in-store exchanges." I'm gonna have to ask my local B&M stores.

But I also noticed that when searching for a game at B&M it states:

Most franchise stores have due dates for BLOCKBUSTER Total Access in-store exchanges. Product kept beyond the due date may incur additional daily rates. See your local store for more information.

I wonder if my two stores are franchises.

You cannot exchange in store for free game rentals, only discounted rentals (I want to say it was like $2 off last time I did a trial membership). And if you exchange a rental for a movie the next game/movie in your queue will not ship till you bring that one back to the store. Least that's how it used to be and the information on the site still seems to support this.

Shipping is about 2-3 days slower than Netflix and last time I tried I had two games that I returned TO THE STORE end up "missing." The only possible explanation was that a store employee decided to steal them rather than scan and mail them. The customer service reps I spoke to were incredibly unhelpful and basically said tough shit. This was my experience with them, might of been completely isolated, but it would take a significant price drop/service increase for me to ever consider them again.

I had Blockbuster Total Access for A LONG TIME. Was grandfathered in on a killer deal. 3 out at a time with unlimited exchanges and a free movie/game rental in store every month. Then all the blockbuster stores nearby closed down. The closest one used to be 5 minutes. Now its 45 minutes. Lost all it's appeal. However, if you have a store nearby, it's a great deal. Unlimited store exchanges is how we filled the weekends with entertainment!

Simply take your By Mails and exchange them for a free movie rental or a discounted $4.99 video game at participating stores.

Crap, you're right. Why do I keep overlooking info I read? I must be too excited...

Damn I would have done this if the exchange in store was free and not a discount. Even if it was a few bucks more I may have considered. Once again Blockbuster getting so close but missing the point of going with them.

How do they stay in business?
Thats just it, they don`t.

lol but seriously we had about 6 of em in our town and 4 of them have shut down in the past year.

I have a BB pass already and here's what I would warn people about:

As stated before, no free in-store game exchages. You get a discount. it comes out to 4.99 or 5.99 for the game rental and it will have the normal return date.

Games are put up for renting through the pass 3 months after their initial release date. So you will not be able to rent any new games outside of trading something in store and paying 5-6 bucks to keep it for 5 days.

When they do finally get those games there are long queue lists.

You can not exchange something that you got from the store even if you have exchanges left. For example, you rent Movie A take it to the store and get movie B, you Can Not exchange movie B for free. You can only exchange something you got online.

Their shipping is not nearly as refined as Netflix or Gamefly. There's been times when they take 2-3 days to ship something and then another 1-2 days for it to get to me. I've had 2 games not arrive to me and 1 not arrive to them after I took it in to the store.

On the positives, the customer service is good. When games don't arrive I just say so and they send another one. And when they didn't get the one I turned in there was no hassle.

Really aside from that it's just the price. I mean, they don't have much going for their service in comparison to Netflix. Their streaming sucks because it's basically pay to rent and pricing is ridiculous for being a stream. I am still using it because I use it to rent old games I want to pass but not own. I keep these games for an average of 3-4 weeks and get another one. If you're looking for serious competition to Netflix, this isn't it.

Edit: I should mention most of my complaints are based on getting games. Their dvd/blu-ray service is pretty good, the only complaint I'd have is that they occasionally take more time than netflix.

wow ! good info lmaodolfo. That answered alot of my questions.
Now I can think about switching to BB when September comes by.

Did the OP seriously say 30 month trial? Is this for real..?

Also.. I may not be reading correct information here so correct me if I'm wrong, but are they making it so if you go for the plan, you STILL have to pay to exchange a game or whatever? I'm not getting the point of this.. GameFly is pretty cool because you just send something back whenever and they send you the next one without a charge. From what I'm seeing, it seems BBV is going to charge you for changing the games. Isn't the point of this so you can get a lot of games out within the month that you're paying? So confused..

Blockbuster only charges you a fee, as I understand, to exchange games in-store. Exchanges through the mail will be covered under the basic plan pricing. I suppose they would just want you to buy the in-store video game rental plan if your intent is to rent as many games as you can in a month. I did it a couple of times and I want to say it was between $20 and $25 for one game out at a time, which is a great deal if you don't have a girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, wife, kids, etc., etc.

I just started a two week trial like 2 days ago. -_- Are the new prices only promotions, or are they new prices for current members as well? It's still showing 11.99/16.99/19.99. Gaming selection is pretty much crap, but you could always use it for blurays/dvds and occasionally pick up a game from 4-5 months ago if you wanted. I feel like the games ship slower as well. I have a bluray coming tomorrow and 2 games coming Monday, but the games were on my queue first.
A little late now that a shit load of your B&M stores are closed. Should have done this years ago Blockbuster.
Umm, actually they've had a 'by mail' service for several years now.
I thought the entire Blockbuster corporation went bankrupt?
They did - Dish Network bought them out. And yeah, I wonder if this is a new subscriber-only thing, because under my account it still shows the normal plans only.

I did check out the DVD forum and found this link: http://www.finanznachrichten.de/20794558

which states Unlimited in-store exchanges and a 30 DAY (not month, lol) free trial for proven Netflix subscribers. Since I do both, I wonder if I can get the same deal.

I have 1-disc service from both. I emailed BB CS last night and asked for the adjustment and they did it. So no real worries there. Besides games and blu-rays the big plus to BB is that they do get the newer releases sooner than Netflix (which apparently has a 28-day window). I may end up dumping Netflix altogether though. The streaming is mediocre at best. It was great as a free add-on, but it's hard to justify 7.99 for something I use once every two months.

Anyone else seeing "free 30 day trial" on the main page, but then it becomes "2 weeks" after you click sign up?

edit: Nevermind, I had to enable scripting on the domain.

It's captain obvious! I'm well aware of that. My comment was in response to Blockbuster competing for new members at low subscriptions instead of screwing them like usual. Maybe they wouldn't have gone bankrupt if they didn't screw their customer base....cough...NETFLIX.....

Their original Total Access was actually very competitive with netflix. I chose TA *over* netflix because the instore exchanges and the 2 monthly free game/movie coupons made it more attractive for about the same price. Moreover, you could do an in store exchange and they would send your next by mail title even before you returned the in store rental (so if on a 1 DVD program you could in reality hold two DVDs; the in store rental subject to in store policies.

Where they went wrong was:

1) Lack of advertising relative to netflix
2) About the same time netflix was adding streaming, BB:TA was cutting features (mainly the coupons and reducing in store exchanges) and raising prices.

So "years ago" BBV *was* doing the right thing contrary to your assertion. It was subsequent to that that they 'lost their way'. This is more a return to form so to speak and we'll see how it goes. But without advertising, I dont see how it will help.

No it isn't but Blockbuster online stocks all of the new releases games 3 months later, so if you mistime your gamefly return you'll be waiting more then 3 months for a new release. So either way your waiting a long time for a new game.

I remember this, BBV actually managed to get me away from Netflix, course at the time this was when I was still renting tons of DVD's and before Netflix Instant existed. Than they just started cutting the service and raising the prices, in the end I was only with them for like a month (plus, I have found the two times I have decided to actually pay for a month of BBV that the shipping times increased by upwards of 2 days once I was out of my trial; can't be entirely coincidence). Ultimately ended up back with Netflix. When Instant finally became substantial (it was pretty week for the first few months) I found myself having 1 DVD for months on end so when they offered a streaming only plan I went for it. There is so much on there and since the movie companies cut a deal that they'll only sell new DVD's to BBV rather than Netflix and Redbox for the first 30 days...

And to try and help alleviate some confusion, the BBV plan works like this: You get 1 disc at a time, whether game or movie. You can return your by mail rental in store for a free movie rental or a discounted game rental ($4.99 I believe, so $2 off). The in-store rental counts against your online queue though; so it's really like having a new rental instantly mailed to you. Once you return the in-store rental they will ship the next by mail rental to you. Hope that clears it up.

As some others and myself have noted though, it often took 2-3 days of "processing" before my next disc would ship and it took on average 2-3 days for the disc to arrive in my mailbox after that. Last time I did a free month it was 2 disc at a time and i only manged to get 4 disc the entire month (course I was doing games which do take longer, but I was also returning in store to speed up the process). I had one disc take over a week of "processing" before it finally shipped. The game's are a nice feature, but honestly, it's sort of a get what you pay for type of service in my opinion.

Also, something to consider. Netflix is raising their DVD plan prices because they are trying to get away from DVD's all together. Shipping cost make it significantly less profitable and clearly Netflix doesn't view it as worthwhile in the long term to keep up. (Plus, the more users they have only subscribing to instant gives them more bargaining leverage when working out digital distribution rights.) I only bring this up because if true, and FYI Gamefly has made the same statements about shipping cost seriously eating away at their profits, BBV will not be able to keep up these prices for very long.
