Specifically, AYCE sushi is what I'm looking for. In the Phoenix area.
I went with some friends to a regular sushi restaurant that they were all crazy about. I ended up spending $16 with tax and tip and I would have rather paid $16 for and eaten human fecal matter than the tripe they served.
I have never eaten sushi in SF or Japan (never even been to either place), so I may not know what good sushi is. But I certainly know when McDonald's could do a better job at it (if they ever decided to venture in that direction) than a place that has crappy sushi.
Honestly, the only time I have ever had good sushi is at certain AYCE locations and a few regular restaurants that are as expensive as AYCE for individual rolls. All my friends here swear that this place we went to is marvelous and they balk at the idea of AYCE being good. They all think it's going to be like a Chinese buffet. So I am wanting to get them to go somewhere of my choosing and showing them what good (and affordable) sushi can be like (as good as you're going to get in the middle of the desert, anyway).
I have researched as much as I can online, but I'm afraid there isn't much to go on out there. So I'm turning to you all. I have found "Takamatsu of Chandler" to be the most universally high rated place in the Phoenix Valley that serves AYCE. Is there anyone who can vouch for this? Are there any other suggestions?
Bottom line? I'd rather pay $25-30 per person (including tax + tip + possible sake bomber for the itamae) for awesome AYCE sushi than $15-20 for crappy Happy Sumo (or worse) quality garbage any day of the week.
