Any ideas on how to convince him to exercise? He really hates it and I feel like I'm just nagging at this point. I used to be able to get him to go out for walks but lately with the thick humid air of NJ he is no longer willing to go. Plus when I do get him to exercise he overdoes it. He'll pick up weights that I know are too heavy and just ends up getting hurt.
Hmmm... that is a tough one... in my experience you can't really convince someone to start exercising - they just have to want to do it for themselves. If he is looking to lose 50lbs. I wouldn't really touch weights until after a few months of cardio.
I know it is easier said than done and believe me some weeks it is VERY tough but you just have to get up early one morning and start dong it. I'm in NJ and it has been hot during the day but not so much at 5 or 6 in the morning. Also, those Retro Fitness places are popping up all over the place and it's only $20/month to join with no long term commitment. You can just go there and do the treadmill or elliptical for 45 minutes or something. Good luck and if he needs any encouragement just have him post here - it does help!
