Any ideas on how to convince him to exercise? He really hates it and I feel like I'm just nagging at this point. I used to be able to get him to go out for walks but lately with the thick humid air of NJ he is no longer willing to go. Plus when I do get him to exercise he overdoes it. He'll pick up weights that I know are too heavy and just ends up getting hurt. :-(

Hmmm... that is a tough one... in my experience you can't really convince someone to start exercising - they just have to want to do it for themselves. If he is looking to lose 50lbs. I wouldn't really touch weights until after a few months of cardio.

I know it is easier said than done and believe me some weeks it is VERY tough but you just have to get up early one morning and start dong it. I'm in NJ and it has been hot during the day but not so much at 5 or 6 in the morning. Also, those Retro Fitness places are popping up all over the place and it's only $20/month to join with no long term commitment. You can just go there and do the treadmill or elliptical for 45 minutes or something. Good luck and if he needs any encouragement just have him post here - it does help!

Yeah we go to retro. The price definitely helps. They keep the cost low (at least at mine) by not having a pool, courts, or anything like that.

I'll never forget what got me back into fitness after a 1.5 year hiatus. My fiancé looked at me and said "your man boobs look droopy." Harsh, but pushed me to get the fitness bug again.

I hope you don't mind my asking but how did you lose so much? I've been able to drop some weight since I started looking here but my husband doesn't seem to have any luck losing. He's got a desk job and can usually keep under 1500 calories a day but doesn't get a lot of exercise. He wants to drop about 50lbs.

Thanks for any suggestion or advice.

For me it all was just baby steps. Diet was the first thing I focused on. Cut out soda, cut dairy down to only one serving a day. I stopped eating Cereal for breakfast and snacks and drink smoothies I make every morning instead, but diet alone will not work. I didn't want to exercise either. What I ended up doing since I also work in an office sitting in a cubicle for 10 hours a day is going on a walk on my lunch break. I eat my bag lunch during my shift and then I go for a 1.5 mile walk during the 30 minutes I have for lunch every day. I started that back in March and was only doing the work walk for a few months.

This will sound goofy, but I started to focus on how big my butt was still after dropping 25 lbs and Google'd what to do next. I read that if I walk 3 miles a day for 5 days a week I could start to lose the thigh and ass inches. So I started walking after work 3-4 miles 5-6 days a week. When it got warmer out I switched to doing my walk in the morning instead.

Walking is the only exercise I have done during this entire period. It's the key for anyone that needs to lose 50+ lbs.

Alright, weight machine acquired! Hoping now that along with my cardio, the weightlifting will help me slim down? maybe? I realize they always say "muscle weighs more than fat."

Any tips or suggestions for weight machine stuff? I'm a novice at this. It's one of those multiple set up deals where it's got the bar to pull down and the leg thing and what have you. I realize I probably sound like an idiot, haha.

Take a picture of it and we'll be able to tell you what you can do with it. Or post the make/model of it.

Also, I'm glad Habbler also can see the greatness of walking to lose weight. It is just so simple.

Is cardio really the answer for weight loss? I noticed when I upped by cardio and did less weights I saw more of a difference.

I thought milk was supposed to be good? Wasn't there a bunch of articles recently about calcium and fat burning?

You can sit there and try to figure out the perfect little cheat foods and all that bull crap, but when it gets down to it you need to burn more calories than you take in, period. Walk, lift, run, jog, climb mountains, swim, jump up and down, roller skate, bike, roll around the floor it doesn't matter. You just need to change your lifestyle from one that resembles a rock to one that is moving. When you decide to lose weight everything changes, you can't lose weight and think your lifestyle and time spending doing other things won't change.

In regard to Cardio, I think so. I didn't lose nearly as much, and as quickly, without running every other day. But Troy nailed it with his comment.

Milk promotes weight loss, in moderation, by helping with digestion. Like a yogurt a day or an pint of skim milk in your cereal.
___

After a month of no gym and not watching what I ate, I ballooned back up to 195 (10 lbs) without even trying. Crazy thing is, I'm still in 32's. My body is a freak show!

So it's back to the diet and gym again...I am so unmotivated, this is going to be tough.

I've had some motivation problems the last week and a half or so combined with terrible diet thanks to the holiday weekend and the leftovers afterwards. Just about every calorie dense thing you can imagine, in extreme excess for about a week. I've been feeling bad and I think my body is having problems digesting all the terrible stuff I've eaten since it's not used to that much junk all at once.

So today I'm trying to get back on track. Went on back to back 1.5 mile runs this morning, 9:27, 10 minute rest, 11:30. Was hoping to stay around 10 flat for the second one, but I was running straight into a strong wind the entire way back to my house and I could tell it was really slowing me down. Going to lift weights this afternoon and I'm tracking what I eat with Lose It again, so hopefully I can get back in the rhythm of things.

Entered a office weight challenge cash pool as a means of motivation. Best loss percent after 10 weeks takes the pot.

Started at 196.4 lbs and dropped 3.6 in the first week without foregoing fast food and opting to bike 8 to 20 miles a day to drop to 1500-1600 net calories (and most importantly, hydrating like a motherfuck). The area around me has bike trials every which direction so I have a ton of workout options without having to worry about car traffic. Currently 5th/20 but way too early to tell who the front runners are going to be.

I think you figured it out for me. Or rather my husband. He doesn't want to change his lifestyle and just wants to do a little weights or exercise here and there an expects the weight to magically disappear and is extremely angry when it doesn't happen. He calls me crazy sometimes for the amount of exercise I do or try to push him to do. I constantly mention that going for a walk or a little exercise does more for him than sitting at the computer looking for junk on the internet. I know I'm guilty of this too but I try to even things out with exercise.

Speaking for myself. I take:

Whey Protein (I use ON 100% Gold Standard)
Casein (Toss-up here. I cycle. Right now I'm on ON 100% Gold Standard)
Creatine (when bulking). (ON brand here, too.)
Daily Multi (NOW Adam Men's Multi)
Fish Oil (Controlled Labs OxiMega Fish Oil)

For whey, I have a post workout shake of one scoop whey protein and one scoop of casein. I mix my daily (5g) creatine into the shake, add a serving of natty PB and some Almond Milk. Tasty!

Now, creatine doesn't work for everyone...some don't really see any results from it. I didn't much in the past, but, I have been using it on my current bulk cycle and I think I'm seeing results this time.

Also...if you can avoid it...DON'T buy at GNC! It's so expensive! There are plenty of online retailers that you'll pay much less for your supplements with! I usually use bodybuilding.com's store; they're usually cheapest and you can find coupons.

Creatine makes me look bloated but I get strong as hell. Last time I tried it (about 3 years ago) I was benching about 265 on my last "set" (1 or 2 reps) when I typically maxed out at 225. I don't think I could bench 185 right now though!

I don't wanna waste money so I'll stick to this till I finish it.

The clerk told me it's whey protein AND creatine. Do you guys think target or walmart have any good whey protein and creatine?

Well I really wanna get ripped, that's my main goal. I'm guessing I lost 4-5 lbs in about 3 weeks and eating pretty good.

Here in Nj too, I've been running five or more mils prrtty consistently for most of the summer. I'd even$run after work at 4 sometimes, and let me tell you, it was brutal. The weather has been nice these past few days and its refreshing. My usual route felt 2 to 3x easier recently with the cooler weather.

Cut out any food items that have sugar listed as an ingredient, cut out foods that have flour listed as an ingredient, and keep your carbs at about 50g a day, pretty much all from fibrous vegetables. If you find that you can't eat enough fiber that way to stay regular, eat a bowl of 5-minute oatmeal in the morning with psyllium husk, a dash of ground flax, and a scoop of protein powder. Add some pastured butter, pure stevia, and cinnamon for extra flavor. Avoid anything that has soy in it.

As for creatine, I haven't checked Walmart lately, but if they have creatine monohydrate it's probably reasonably priced. Otherwise, Vitamin Shoppe has decent prices on monohydrate, as do various supplement sites. Walmart's whey is reasonably priced, get the stuff without sugar added to it.

EDIT: Don't want to forget this, as it's vitally important: get enough sleep and rest between weightlifting workouts.

I've never tried that brand you bought, but, specs look pretty good. Two scoops of that would give you 6g of creatine and 60g of protein. The one downside with creatine already mixed in is that if you have two shakes (or more) in a day, you're likely getting way too much creatine.

When I first started out I was using the whey at Walmart. I despised the taste...unfortunately, I cannot remember the brand it was. Specs weren't anything too fancy. I wasn't on creatine at the time, so I don't know what they have.

Can't speak for Target, as I've never been there for supplements.

I started a keto diet 16 days ago, I've dropped from 203 to 191 in that time. I know a majority of it is water weight, but I still feel better than I've felt in a very long time. I've even decided to start running starting monday, I got a couch to 5k app to get me going.

I was 6' and around 205 at the time. I looked horrible though - too bloated. I mean at the gym in a tank top it was OK but in normal clothes I just looked like I needed to lay off the cheeseburgers. Then one day I decided I didn't care how strong I was and here we are. I'm 25lbs. lighter, slimmed down to wearing size L for everything and a huge pussy. I don't look jacked or anything in regular clothes but I do look like I'm in decent shape. I feel better too. So moral of the story is I'll never take creatine again... I think. :D

Couch to 5k is a great fitness program. I hate treadmills and found it easier to run around the block.

There's a reservoir down the street, there's a 3 mile loop and a 6 mile loop, I thought that would work perfectly for this program. I plan on going very early in the morning since I'm still fairly self concious about doing anything physical in public.

I wouldn't worry about looking gassed or out-of-shape. We all gotta start somewhere and you'll be missing out on the nice scenery when most people are out jogging.

The workouts are only about 30 minutes, so you should take that into account when doing your runs unless you're planning on walking the remainder of those 3/6 miles, which isn't exactly a horrible idea either for that extra fitness.

Hey different goals for different people. I want to get big and strong but I could see one day wanting to slim down more.

Going to attempt a 315 deadlift tomorrow for 3-5 reps.

I'm like Javery, I like being smaller now. I'm 170~173 on a given day, and my bench rep is down to 1 set of 10 @ 185 and two sets of 10 at 205. Everything else went down too, 3 sets of 10 @ 185 for decline and 3 sets of 10 at 145 for incline. Chest wise that is much lower than I've ever been, but I'm still happy with it for my weight.

That's still really good and nothing to sneeze at. Bench is my biggest weakness and hasnt progressed like my other lifts since I started in January.

Squat 135 to 225
Deadlift 135 to (hopefully) 315 tomorrow
Overhead press 45 to 105
Row 110 to 175
Bench 135 to 165.

I thought for sure I'd be at 185 by now. Eating more and getting form down have helped.
