With the holidays just around the corner, I thought a great gift idea for my dad would be a USB video capture device. I am not really familiar with the products, and am in the preliminary stages of research about them. I'm not looking to break the bank, but if there is one that really stands out above the rest I would definitively consider it. The main uses that I see it being utilized for are transferring old home movies to preserve and re-record to send out to other family members (mostly VHS but some DVDs that will only play on the DVD recorder that created them) and also as a method to capture audio from his vinyl record collection. Video editing software is not mandatory to include in the package (however any advice on this would also be appreciated). Ease of use and quality are my two main concerns, but I am primarily interested in a device that just does what it is expected of it. My dad has Windows 7 64 bit on his quadcore desktop, and Windows XP Pro 32 bit on his dual core laptop (both of which seem to have more than sufficient specs for this process). Thank you in advance for any insight on this...

I wouldn't suggest Dazzle devices
They are decent, but there are much better ones out there

is there any advantage to having a stand alone unit compared to usb all in one? i was thinking that I would be able to get better signal quality with the box...

if you have costco they also have some kind of vhs to dvd package there with a usb capture device. Check that out. And The bigger box usually works better than the little tiny USB stick ones.
