Retro Game Collection

CAGiversary!
Feedback

I've got a fairly substantial retro game collection. For the most part, I was trying to get quality games for the system but I have also had quite a few that were part of an ebay lot or whatnot so it clogs up the list a little.

However, I'm trying, for the most part, to have quality not necessarily quantity. If I just wanted to have pure numbers, I could go rummage around every vintage store's sports bin but the idea is that I'm trying to play all of these games. For instance, I've played at least a few minutes of every NES, SNES, N64, and GB/GBC/GBA: Play the ones I don't like for a few minutes and play the ones I like for much longer.

I'm kindof trying to make one last push to finish out my "vintage" collection but I didn't really see a board on CAG to tap into for a question like this. So, would it be acceptable to throw it on this board and open up the floor or would that be too spammy and open the door for a slew of "rate my collection" threads?

SI

Well, what the heck- just threw it out there for the world to see. I'll take it down if need be.

So, what am I missing of key games? Or, for the purposes of the web: "I just listed all of the most awesome games for the systems above" with the inherent subtext of "Clearly, I have informed you that I need to be proven wrong". :)

Are you more concerned about titles you need or what you're looking to get rid of?

I think you could do without Xenosaga 2, instead get Magician for the NES \\:D/

I'm looking more at what I need to add- what things am I missing from a collection of this scope. Not planning on subtracting from them anytime soon, but who knows in this world

That is a pretty impressive collection. With my collection I am trying to focus on getting complete games- instructions, box, and cart. I will buy loose carts if it is something that I really want to play, but for the most part if they don't have at least the instruction book - I don't consider it part of 'my collection'. That ups the challenge a bit, but in my opinion it is worth it.

As for games that you are missing - I would say that since you have a power base converter - you should get wonderboy 3 and Rastan for the master system. Also - Streets of Rage 3 was pretty decent, despite the fact that they freaked out and censored the US version terribly. I also didn't see Spiderman Maximum Carnage listed (although I might have missed it)

For the ps1 section, you might want to consider filling out a Working Designs set. I've been picking these up myself since I missed them the first go around; titles such as Elemental Gearbolt, Thunder Force V, Silhouette Mirage, etc.

It's kinda sobering that I can see a collection of this size and still point out titles that are missing, no Tactics Ogre (gba), no Dino Crisis, no Shadow Hearts? Everybody has their personal tastes for sure but I can't see finishing off a collection completely--there's always new games to discover.

Hmm, it might fun to counterstrike with my recently grown PS2 collection, it's about time I took an inventory anyhow...

In the CAG period, (11) of these were next to nothing from Gamestop flips, (7-8) from yardsales or craigslist, hell even for the few I paid market on...I flip enough other stuff so that's not a problem.

That is definitely true. And I know I've added and subtracted off of the list from time to time. I saw a perfect condition Harvest Moon (SNES) for $75 at a local store and didn't pull the trigger. At that point, I knew it was time to take it off the list of games to chase after (I'm still kicking myself a little for that, but...). Tactics Ogre for the PSX falls under that category. I was thinking of picking up the PSP version, tho.

As for Dino Crisis and Shadow Hearts, I guess I have a lack of games with buxom protagonists on the front cover that I should correct ;)

That's the thing, tho- there are going to be blind spots and it's like a baseball Hall of Fame problem where you start saying "Well, X is borderline and it got in so why not Y and Z, which are similar". I posted my list to another board and got a few different responses from "pick a turn based strat from the NES like Genghis Kahn or Romance of the Three Kingdoms" to "the N64 had great Wrestling games so pick the best, like Wrestlemania 2000", which are quintessential experiences for those systems.

How does Working Designs fit into things? They did the Lunar remakes for the PSX didn't they? What do those even go for these days- I got mine close to when they came out for close to retail price because "collector editions" like that were pretty rare back then.

Yeah, my Master System set is pretty lacking- it was almost all from one lot on ebay. I have Wonder Boy, Zillion, and Phantasy Star all on my list to pick up for that system. Rastan I'm not familiar with and will have to go look into.

Streets of Rage 3 struck me as the costliest and worst reviewed of the three so I've been on the fence about it. Spiderman- didn't really look into it. I remember a lot of bad licensed games from the 8 and 16 bit era and the exceptions were fairly few and far between (Disney Capcom games for the NES, for instance). Anything about it that was memorable?

As for the collectable nature of things, it depends on the system. Atari, NES, SNES, N64, SMS, and Genesis- I try to get whole sets and for Sega, it's much easier than Nintendo (cardboard boxes that everyone threw away) but I kindof assume the default of cart only for those systems. It's the same with GB, GBC, and GBA games. There are some exceptions- for instance, my GBA NES Classics set is 100% complete. Part of the collectibility of that set is how they look and the box.

But since the CD-era (PSX and forward), I rarely go anything but complete. For instance, I have a rare few like Marvel vs Capcom on the PS2 (3/$10 from when Hollywood Video was closing out!) or Xenogears on the PSX where I don't have manuals and would eventually like to get them. I've had success through various avenues (like bresoftware or ebay) to try to complete those which aren't. However, I found a Valkyrie Profile on the PSX for $50 and got a manual off ebay for $20. I know it's typically $70 complete, but it's hard to pull the trigger on a $20 manual when there are so many games that could be had for that or less.

They're best known for the Lunar series, but some of my favorite stuff were the games they released on the Saturn. If you really want to fill out that collection a Saturn might be in order. Games like Dragon Force, Albert Odyssey, Shinning Wisdom & Magic Knight Rayearth are pricey but some great games not only to play but look nice in a collection. They also did a few Sega CD games worth looking into.

Harvest Moon for the SNES is a cool item for being the first in the US, though I'd try it on emulator before buying--being a farming sim you don't need the tight controls you'd need for a game like Castlevania 4.

I don't know about the PSP version, but the GBA Tactics Ogre is much better than the Playstation 1 version (In the PS1 version you're limited to four equipment slots per character, which means it's rough carrying healing items into battle. Also the experience balance sucks so you can easily spend three hours in training mode just to level up your army one level). The GBA version improved the play balance and gives you a common item bag (like in Final Fantasy Tactics).

I agree that the quintessential experiences are the way to go, though you'll often get different opinions on what those are. For me KOEI games are hit or miss, I enjoyed Lord of Darkness and New Horizons but at the same time I don't want to own every game about a warlord in ancient china.

The PS1 Lunars average between $40-60 depending on completeness, though most of the titles I mentioned are more affordable--within the $15-20 range. Elemental Gearbolt especially has an interesting history behind it, not only is it one of the few light-gun games to feature a fantasy setting but Working Designs also ran a contest, one of the prizes being the infamous Assassin's Case with the Golden Guncon :)

I guess that I am a little spoiled - I strictly collect Sega systems and games :) Most of them had plastic cases so they are easier to find complete.

As for Spiderman/Venom Maximum Carnage - it is available on both SNES and Genesis - it is a side scrolling beat 'em up. If you are a fan of the genre and a fan of Spiderman - it is 100% worth checking out (it got mixed reviews since that is a pretty small demographic). If you don't like side scrolling beat 'em ups, then it might be one to skip. The thing that makes it interesting to collect is the fact that they had two releases of the game - one with a red cartridge and one with the system's standard cartridge case.

Streets of Rage 3 is more interesting to have in a collection because of the history more than for the game itself. The game is basically a beefed up / slightly better streets of rage 2, but when it was brought to the US from Japan - they had to censor a ton of stuff and make some rather silly changes to get it published here. They changed everything from character sprites (to be 'less sexy') to the story line.
