Suggestions for BluRay Player

CAGiversary!
Hi everybody. I'm trying to buy a BluRay player as a gift for my girlfriend. Not looking to spend any more than $125 or so. Anyone have a good suggestion for a quality player around that price? I've been trolling Amazon nonstop looking for deals, eying Philips BDP3406 for $88. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Good suggestion! Thanks for the help, it's pretty much what I was looking for. Also, it having a ton more reviews than the one I was looking at makes me feel better about it. I guess for the price I'm not going to get a 5-star product that everyone can agree on. Unless I find something spectacularly different, I think that's the one to get. Thanks again!

Well it's a Sony, so you'll at the very least get a decent warranty if anything goes awry. Plus it honestly doesn't look like that bad of a player. When it comes to electronics, everything 4 stars out of 5 and over is great!

Glad you liked my choice... My wife's choice I mean... lol

Get a PS3. Pay $100 more and get a full on gaming console. I dunno why anyone buys standalone blu-ray players (unless they want a second one for another room)

QFT. If you can get a good deal on a PS3, maybe one of the holiday bundles, you'll be getting a really good blu-ray player with lots of extras for only a little more than you're budgeting for.

Looks like the Panasonic one that was suggested has good reviews, but a couple I read said that it's WiFi ready, which means you need an adapter. I was looking for one with WiFi built-in as it'll be used in a room away from the router.

I was looking at the $68 one as well, but again, no WiFi.

As for a PS3, I almost bit on one of the holiday bundles over the weekend, as $200 is pretty much a steal for a 160 gb, especially with the games included. But she doesn't game, and it'd be a waste to get her a 160 gb unit while I still have the launch 60 gb. So then I'd be tempted to give her mine and take the newer one, but it wouldn't have PS2 tech in it, so then I'd have to take her old PS2 that she was using if I wanted to play old games........so yeah. A standalone BluRay player is really all I need.

Thanks again all, keep 'em coming!

The thing that finally made me break down and replace my bluray player in the bedroom with another PS3 was that the PS3 loads all my blurays so much faster. I don't know if it's the added processing power or if I just had a junk stand-alone player, but it was enough of an annoyance to me that I'm glad to have the upgrade.

Get a PS3 holiday bundle and sell those 2 games. Heck I got $40 for Ratchet alone, you could get $30 for LBP. And the PS3 is one of the best BR players around. Always has been.

Oh didn't know you needed WiFi, let me see what else is good out there. I might get the LG one myself, it is a pretty solid deal and connecting an ethernet cable should be fine where it'll be located.
This Panasonic has built-in WiFi and has 3D support too. It's the bestselling BD player on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004G8HXXO/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

It's $139 which is above your budget, but not my much really. It's got very good reviews.
+1
Like mentioned previously. Sell the Avatar 3D Blu for $80 (ppl are bidding to these amount currnetly) and you end up with a blu ray player for $60.

Yeah I think I'm gonna go with the Panasonic 3D. The main page said something about a mail-in rebate offer for the free Avatar 3D, which sucks, but I've done so many of them at this point they hardly bother me. Just a necessary step to becoming a cheap ass, I suppose. Thanks again for the help everyone, happy deal hunting!

I got the Samsung BD-D6500 Blu-ray player yesterday. It has 3D and also built in wifi. I think Amazon has it for $130. So far, I am really liking it better than the LG player it replaced. It can also stream from Netflix and Hulu. Also another nice thing about it is, I haven't had any problem playing mkv files so far.

And its a 3D blu-ray player too
Get a Panasonic DMP-BDT110 and sell the Avatar 3D on ebay.

While I also recommend the BDT110, the odds are by the time the promo Avatar blu ray is sent out, the retail version will be out in stores or at least folks will be aware it is coming out soon...I think it is due out sometime in Feb 2012.

I would also point out the both the BDT110 and BDT210 can handle amazon instant video as well, which might be a significant plus for prime members

Watch out with the Panasonic blu-ray players. Apparently A LOT of people have been having problems with netflix instant streaming.

Story here.

Seems kind of random, so if you decided to go with the panasonic make sure to test out netflix streaming thoroughly, cause if it doesn't work then you'll probably have to exchange it.

I personally got myself a used PS3 bundle of craigslist to use as a 2nd BR player for all of the reasons mentioned so far, but as a gf gift, for someone who truly wouldn't use any of the extras the console provides, I have been looking at the LG player ssjmichael linked to. It has very good reviews compared to more expensive players and I personally couldn't find any current players cheaper, even with refurbs.

Any type of PS3 is still the best value though.

I went ahead and bought the Panasonic BD210 (based on your suggestions) on amazon for 129.99

The fact that it supports Amazon video made it for me because I just signed up for Amazon prime. The streaming was very smooth, no hiccups or buffering at all. I was watching Dead Snow streaming and it was as if I was watching it from a disc. Just superb.

And the player goes from off to ready to play a movie in literally less than 2 seconds. It puts my ps3 to shame (as a Blu ray player at least).

I love the touch free disc tray thing as well. Just glide your hand above the sensor to open/close the tray. Not a completely necessary feature, but it is cool to show off to people.

I highly recommend the BD210, and the fact that it comes with Avatar 3D Blu ray for free is even better.

Just a suggestion for anybody looking for a blu-ray player

My Mom was looking for a blu-ray player the other day because she bought a Sony on Black Friday- got it home and discovered it didn't have wi-fi...you needed to buy an adapter for $80!! YIKES. So we looked around and found a great blu-ray player at Blockbuster. It's Toshiba and it's got Wi-fi (along with Netflix, YouTube, Pandora, Etc.). It was $99 which is a decent deal in itself, BUT if you sign a contract to have their movie pass for a year (for $14.99 a month)- the blu-ray player is only $49.99!! I thought it was a great deal since she already has the pass....all they had to do was cancel her old one and sign up for a new one. Just an idea :)

You should honestly just roam around and see whats around. I got a Sony BDP-S570 open box the other day at Best Buy for $24.99. Works great had a slight dent as im pretty sure it was a display model but my remote for my old S550 worked great so now i have a 3D Blu-Ray player and Reciever. Just gotta get the 3D TV sometime.

That LG BD630 is down to $59.99 on Amazon now. I just bought one for a gift for 67.99 yesterday damnit! For anyone interested from what I can find it's pretty basic, it does not have WiFi so that could be a deal breaker but can be connected with an ethernet cable.
