Japanese Video Game Figure Thread

This thread is dedicated to Japanese produced video game figures. In the past, Japanese figures were mostly used for manga and anime characters, but lately they have started making figures from video game franchises. This is more of an awareness announcement than a deal thread since figures can easily sell out long before they are available and the second hand market can be crazy expensive. Pre-ordering is usually the cheapest way to get a popular figure.

Released Figures:

To give you an idea of what Japanese figures look like, the following are some that have been released over the years:

About Japanese Figures:

Scale figures, like Zero Suit Samus, are statues made of ABS and PVC. Scale are bigger than Figma, more detailed, and again for display rather than play. Scale figures are not posable and may not come with accessories or alternate facial expressions.

Figma is like an action figure but higher quality. Figma are very posable and come with accessories, alternate faces, and alternate hands to recreate poses from the source material (as well as make up your own scenarios). Check out all the different display poses they show off in pics. While they are designed with posability in mind, these are still meant for display rather than play. These aren't like action figures you would give a kid. Many Figma parts are compatible with other Figmas, allowing you to create interesting combinations of outfits and expressions.

Nendoroid are cutesy interpretations of characters. Each is about 4" tall and, like Figma, usually comes with various faces/hands/accessories to reproduce poses/scenes from the source material. Also like Figma, many Nendo parts are compatible with other Nendos. Faces, hair, hands, and outfits can often be swapped between characters.

Real Action Heroes (RAH) are like a blend of scale figure, Figma, and doll. They are still made of ABS and PVC, but the clothes are made of fabric, giving them a more realistic look. RAH are posable like Figma and typically include accessories and alternate faces. They are bigger than your average scale figure and very high quality. Accordingly, they are also exceedingly expensive.

Shipping:

Don't forget about shipping cost. SAL small packet registered should cost $10-20 and takes about 2-3 weeks to reach me in Florida. SAL may also be available unregistered for 410 JPY less, but you lose tracking and insurance (so if your package goes missing, you are sol). EMS is the best shipping and only takes about 2 days to arrive but is considerably more expensive. There is also SAL Parcel, but it is worth spending a little extra for EMS. You may have to use EMS if your item is too big to fit in a SAL box. I always use SAL registered when I can. If you pre-order multiple figures, you can combine shipping if they come out in the same month (assuming no delays) and save some money.

Shipping cost is based on weight. If you are ordering multiple figures at once, it is cheaper to request two SAL shipments than one EMS. It is also cheaper to combine items than do separate shipments for each. From my experience, 3-4 Nendoroid/Figma will fit in a single SAL box. A scale figure may fit with 1-2 Nendoroid/Figma boxes, depending on the scale and size of figure box used. Some figures come in larger boxes than expected. There is no way to know how large/heavy your figure will be before ordering. Some stores may offer an estimate at time of order or indicate that an item should be compatible with SAL.

SAL unregistered (no tracking or insurance) does not require a signature upon delivery. All other shipping methods do, so try to be home on delivery day. If you miss the delivery, you can stop by your local post office for pickup starting the next day.

Payment:

For most Japanese shops, you don't pay until the figure(s) is ready to ship. The exceptions are some limited edition items (which you'll have to pay for in full at time of purchase, including shipping) and certain stores that require a % deposit. Payment is best done through PayPal.

The current exchange rate can be viewed in PayPal -> Profile -> My Money -> Currencies (disclosure arrow of PayPal balance). The PP rate is always a little more expensive than the current rate since they charge a fee for the exchange (I believe 2.5%, the rate you see is already calculated with that fee). You can also opt to pay directly from your PP tied bank account or cc when checking out with PP.. You will have to check your bank and cc websites for their rate info, including whatever % fee they use for the exchange. Best case scenario would be to use a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees.

You will usually receive an invoice the day after an item is released. Shipping usually occurs the day after payment is sent, depending on the store.

Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

AmiAmi: http://www.amiami.com/
My favorite store. Among the best prices. Easily combine orders by month. Amazing pre-owned section. Shipping is usually a little more than other stores since they use lots of packing materials.

Hobby Link Japan: http://www.hlj.com/
My second favorite store. Usually a bit more expensive than the store listed here. In exchange for higher prices, you can cancel orders at any time. Private warehouse feature lets you hold items for up to 60 days to combine shipping, though you still pay for the figure at time of release. Excellent customer service.

Hobby Search: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/
Can combine orders of the same month but not as nicely as AmiAmi. Can cancel a pre-order within the first week of placing.

Big in Japan: http://biginjap.com/
Prices usually a little lower than the rest. Good selection of prize figures. Can pay for pre-orders upfront. Can combine orders by month if you send them a message through your order history page. Can act as proxy or forwarder. Not good at responding to emails, so I don't use them now as much as I used to.

Tokyo Otaku Mode: http://otakumode.com/
Charges in USD $, pay upfront at time of placing order. Regularly offers coupons and bonus point campaigns. Has a Premium membership that is well worth getting since it pays for itself ($15 for 3 months gives you $16.50 in points), 5% off everything, slightly cheaper shipping, and better coupons. You get $5 in points when you register your account, plus another $5 if you signup through a referral link (referrer also gets $5), making your first order $10 off. Excellent customer service.

Amazon Japan: https://www.amazon.co.jp/

Thanks to their Global program, many of their figures are now eligible to be shipped directly to your house rather than having to go through a proxy/forwarder. This is only available on figures fulfilled by Amazon, including those sold by third-party and fulfilled by Amazon. Not all Amazon fulfilled items are eligible for Global shipping. Shipping cost is very good (around RSAL cost) and very fast (3-6 days). Japanese consumption tax (8%) is removed from the advertised price at checkout.

Plamoya: http://www.plamoya.com
Check for sales, otherwise usually overpriced.

Secondhand Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

I buy a lot secondhand. The items are usually in great condition and, for most of my orders, have never been opened before. This lets me get figures I missed out on before I started collecting or couldn't budget at time of release.

AmiAmi Pre-owned: http://www.amiami.com/top/page/c/preowned.html
My favorite store for secondhand figures thanks to a daily updated selection, cheap shipping options, and combining pre-owned items with my pre-orders for that month. Items are rated by separate figure and box conditions. "A" condition means it looks brand new, "B" means there is some normal ware but should still be good, "C" or lower you should probably avoid (at least for figure condition, I personally don't care too much about secondhand box condition). Pricing is hit or miss, but usually good compared to other stores. Their selection is good and updated daily (except Sundays). Stock status is accurate when ordering.

Mandarake: http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shop/en/
Excellent source for secondhand figures. Mandarake is a web front for a collection of B&M hobby stores in Japan. Their selection is huge, pricing is great, and new items are added daily. Many of their secondhand items have never been opened. The condition is commonly something like "not opened/box damaged" which translates to it will look brand new when you get it :3 Each order can only be from a single store since it will be shipping from that one location. Because these are B&M stores, an item you ordered may sell out that same day in store (this has happened to me a few times). In that case, the item is removed from your order, or if your order is just one item, the order is cancelled. You can check boxes for "cancel order if this item is oos". You'll receive an email the following day with the items they were able to secure (hopefully everything in your order), the total including shipping, and a link to payment.

Suruga-ya: http://www.suruga-ya.jp/
Warning: Suruga-ya is in Japanese and requires a proxy or forwarder to get your items (see below for details).
Huge selection and low prices. Sales on items can randomly start at any time. Adding more items to your cart can give you a % discount. Stock system is accurate, at least from my experiences. As the website is only available in Japanese, use MFC to find the Japanese name of the character you are interested in so that you can perform a search.

Recommended US Shops:

Big Bad Toy Store (BBTS): http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/ (allows cancellations, no money down required on pre-orders, warehouse feature, $4 shipping)
Crunchyroll: http://www.crunchyroll.com/store/ (check for weekly deals, free shipping at $75)
Tokyo Otaku Mode (TOM): http://www.otakumode.com/ (I also count them as a US shop since some of their items are fulfilled by US warehouse, free shipping at $150)
Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/ (occasionally has some figures at good prices)

My Figure Collection:

MFC is an amazing (and free) community of figure collectors. It has info on all Japanese figures including release dates, pics, user ratings, reviews, etc. If you are interested in Japanese figure collecting, I highly recommend joining to keep track of your collection and follow the latest news on upcoming releases. Here's my MFC profile as an example: http://myfigurecollection.net/profile/Cantisama

CAG has an MFC club that you can join here: http://myfigurecollection.net/club/1219

Proxy and Forwarding:

There are two services when buying an item that cannot be shipped directly to your country, a proxy and a forwarder. A proxy is a business or person located in the host country (Japan in our case) that places an order on your behalf and then ships it to you.

With a forwarder, you are the one who places the order. You set the shipping address to that of the forwarder who is located in the host country. The forwarder then ships the package to you upon receipt.

Forwarding is typically cheaper than using a proxy since a proxy will charge a % fee based on order total that includes the cost of the item(s). Since with forwarding you are the one paying for the items directly, any % fee is only applied to the cost of shipping + a small forwarding fee. Using a proxy can be easier though since you don't have to place the order yourself on a website that may be only available in a foreign language.

There are many proxy and forwarding service providers. For Nendo Red from Amazon.co.jp, I used Big in Japan as a forwarder and the transaction went perfectly. Fees were also very reasonable.

Thanks for posting this, man. I've been trying to keep track of these. Bummer that Zero Suit isn't built to the same scale, but they're both still great.

Pretty nice looking figures.

Thanks for clarifying the price range for registered SAL, since I couldn't find any info regarding that on their site.

I think the price is done by weight and they have a table somewhere that shows the cost of each weight. Of course they don't know the weight until they actually have the figure in stock, and shipping rates vary over time. When ordering you just have to remember to budget extra cash for shipping. Once in stock they email you an invoice with shipping cost.

My last single figure SAL registered shipping cost was 1090 JPY (~$14) and it was about the size of a Figma. Unregistered will only save you $5 so it's worth the extra cost of registering to get tracking and insurance.

It can't transform, but it does come with the morph ball for display (see bottom-right corner of pic).

Does anyone know where these came from

They are going for about 200 mint on ebay. I tried finding info and some things say it was a limited to 500 release. I have one, I think I got it from Toys R US, but find it hard to believe it was that limited.

Holy crap, that Varia Suit Samus looks awesome and the price isn't bad at all. I wouldn't mind having both but that Zero Suit Samus seems way overpriced by comparison...

Are these limited or anything? I don't normally buy figures and I'm not sure I want to commit to a purchases now...
Does anyone know where these came from
I've seen those ads on eBay, that figure always sells for a high price. I would sell it for a nice chunk of change and use some of the income to replace it with the much better looking Figma.

You can't tell from the individual pics how different a Figma is from a standard scale Japanese figure like the Zero Suit. Here's a side by side:

The Figma is about the size of an action figure. The Zero Suit is 1/8 scale so while not huge, the size difference should be very noticeable. 1/8 figures from Japan usually cost between 4800 - 7000 JPY so the price is average.
Are these limited or anything? I don't normally buy figures and I'm not sure I want to commit to a purchases now...
They aren't "limited edition" but they will only manufacture a single run of them and that will be it. Sometimes they will do another run of a popular figure like a year after initial release, but don't count on it. If the figure is popular it can sell out through preorders. Figures that don't sell well can go on sale like two or three months after release for around 50% off (from msrp, these amiami prices are already like 20% off). I think at least the Figma will be popular so preordering may be a good idea.

If you are a fan of Metroid trying to decide between these two, the Varia Suit Figma is the better way to go since it is half the price and the more recognizable representation of Samus.

I forgot to chime in on this, but that figure was made by Joyride Studios (who's now defunct, I think). There was nothing special about it, it was a regular figure with a regular action figure price. Here's what I learned about it a few years ago and why it's worth tons:
-Even though it came out after Prime and before Prime 2, when Samus was pretty popular, it sold very poorly.
-It looked like crap.
-It was distributed to very few locations (I've read that it was supposedly GameStop exclusive) and receive no advertisement.

Here's more info on it.
http://www.16bit.com/joyride-samus.asp

Additionally, Joyride made other video game figures but I don't know what they are and if they're valuable or not.
EDIT* A little bit of Goolging revealed that they a large number of Halo figures and a Zelda figure (Link with Epona), which is worth more than Samus.

You are one very lucky bastard.:)

Ah, I see. Thanks for the very informative posts! I went ahead and ordered both but it looks like they don't even collect your contact info until they receive their stock so I guess it can't hurt.

Well the new figures look way better... I should just get rid of this old one before it tanks. Thanks a bunch for the info, guess I got it at gamestop.

Also...that baby metroid is cute, id take care of it if it was following me around

If you get both figures, then Figma Samus has a lot to worry about:

They haven't officially announced that the Metroid will fit like this in final versions, but since the same manufacturer is making both figures I think this will work.

Some of those mechs on that site are pretty fucking awesome... I wish I had more disposable income. I'd buy a bunch of those.

These have sold out at most retailers (at least of the retailers I've used and trust, which include: AmiAmi, Hobby Search, Hobby Link Japan, Otacute, & Big in Japan).

The only remaining opening I can find is for Zero Suit Samus from Hobby Search (6314 JPY, ~$77) : http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10174269

Selling out two months in advance, not too shabby. There is still a chance that orders will open again after release if retailers have extra stock beyond fulfilling preorders. This stock is usually pretty low though and can run out in just a few hours for popular figures (which I think these will be), so if interested you'll have to check the retailer sites often around release time (end of June).
Why would they make zero suit so much bigger?
Check the op, they are two completely different styles of figures. The zero suit is a typical scale figure that is pretty much a pvc statue, while the varia suit is part of a product line called "Figma" which are like posable action figures.
And who still has regular Samus in stock?
The sites I use are all sold out, but here is a trusted site: http://www.anime-island.com/products/metroid-other-m-samus-aran-figma-133-max-factory-nintendo.html
Unlike the sites I've mentioned so far, Anime-Island is an American reseller. Shipping should be cheaper and faster since it is within the US, but they charge you more for the figure to cover their additional overhead of reselling Japanese products as well as the shipping they had to pay to get them from Japan. American resellers take an additional 2 months to get the product in stock after the Japanese release.
loving the Zero Suit, who do you guys usually buy from? Man would love to start buying figures again

Good thing this thread was just bumped, I was looking for it. Something just occurred to me.

I placed an order with the site you (lilman) posted in the OP (back on Feb 4th) but I don't recall ever inputting any payment info because it was a pre-order. How does that work with amiami.com?

This is my first pre-order from Asia, and I get part of it is due to shipping charges but I'm normally used to entering payment info when I order, regardless of it being a pre-order or not.

You're fucking kidding me!

I bought two of these at a local drugstore YEARS ago! I opened one for me to display...and the other is still SEALED! Awesome! I'm totally selling the sealed one.

Best part? They were like $4 a piece! :D
EDIT: And oh yeah...it's a pretty crappy figure. The Sammy head doesn't stay on well, the joints sound awful and the whole thing is pretty cheap feeling.

You don't give them your payment info until your items are in stock and they are ready to ship. You will then get an email from them with your total (including shipping) and a link to their site to fill out payment. I think they accept some credit cards now, but the standard when dealing with overseas companies is to use PayPal. Once they have confirmed your payment, your items are shipped (usually the day after payment).

Ok, gotcha. Thanks.

I think I will have to get these. They will look out of place next to all the F4F and other statues but I will a place for them. They actually look sexier than the Zero Suit released by F4F.

Also just going to complain a bit more due to never finding a good priced varia suit F4F.

Added Skyward Sword Link Figma and Sonic Nendoroid.

I ordered Link but passed on Sonic as I'm much more of a Nintendo fan than Sega. Also, Nendoroid is supposed to be a cutesy interpretation of a character, but the Sonic Nendoroid just looks like regular Sonic :p

Hobby Search is having a 50% off shipping promo right now if you order using pay-pal pre-approved. This is great for ordering with EMS which is the fastest/best overseas shipping but is usually too expensive. Promo is valid on preorders but must be placed by June 15 (2 days from now). I ordered Skyward Sword Link Figma using this deal. The total with EMS should be about $50 (the same price as purchasing from AmiAmi with Registered SAL, but should only take about 2 days to arrive instead of 2 weeks).

Both Samus figures should be coming out soon (figures do get delayed like video games, but I think these will be on time). Preorders for these have sold out at most sites. There will probably be some available on the day of release. If you missed out on preordering, be sure to check the retailer sites regularly. Once available again they can sell out in mere hours.

This morning I pre-ordered the Link Skyward figure from Play-asia for 46 + 17 fedex, very exited for when it ships in October. It's a bit expensive but worth it. You don't see many Nintendo figures and that Link is awesome. Thought I would hurry before it pre-orders out. I would love that zero suit samus, but it's really expensive.

Preordered the Link figure. Really pissed at myself for missing the preorders on both Sammy figures. I hope they have them In Stock somewhere when they do release.

I just wanted to check if the Samus figures were still coming... and now, I have a Link figure preordered.:whistle2:/

DAMN YOU LILMAN!!!

Hehe, be glad I'm only posting game figures. I collect anime figures too and just broke my wallet paying for:

Varia Suit Samus Figma now has a release date of 7/7. If you missed out on preorder, be sure to check the sites in op on the release day for chance of extra stock (may sell out fast, so check regularly if you are really interested).

Zero Suit Samus figure still has no firm release day, so 7/30 is the current estimate. For me that means waiting longer to get the Figma since they are shipping together. Oh well, worth it to me to save some $.

i notice on some sites the link figure is still avalaible while the samus one is just plain gone already everywhere

im keeping an eye out for the play arts kai raiden. but with solidus going for $100-$150. i have my doubts about picking raiden up, in the future

Varia Suit Figma Samus is now released. Haven't seen any order openings for her, but keep checking the op sites today and tomorrow if interested.

Zero Suit Samus figure just got an opening on amiami. She's 6980 yen (6% off msrp) instead of the previous preorder price of 5750 (22% off). Her expected release date is now 7/11.
-Edit- Sold out again.
i notice on some sites the link figure is still avalaible while the samus one is just plain gone already everywhere
That's because Link Figma preorders only started three weeks ago, while the Samus figures preorders opened months ago. Popular figures usually sell out of preorders at least two months before release.

I received a watch list email last night from Hobby Search, saying Varia Samus was ready for order (at 10:26 PM). By the time I got back to my apartment at 10:50, the page didn't show any for sale. :/

I'm not too well versed in Figma's releases. Are they a "Once they're gone, they're gone" kinda company or will we be able to find any outside of preordering?

That's how it goes with popular figures. Keep checking the sites in the op for the next few days.

You can also keep an eye on her Tsuki-board page: http://myfigurecollection.net/item/81488
Tsuki-board is the best figure community and they are good at posting when orders are available somewhere. If a CAG joins that site, send me a friend request: http://myfigurecollection.net/profile/Cantisama

Once a figure is gone, it is gone for good. There is usually at least a little extra stock outside of the preorders. This stock can appear at any time and then disappear very quickly (see Rig's comment ^). Sometimes they do re-release later on (several months or even over a year later), but don't count on it.

Sometimes they do re-release later on (several months or even over a year later), but don't count on it.
Thanks for the heads up. Guess I should get on that Link and keep an eye out for Samus then.

I see places like Bigbadtoystore have Samus still listed for preorder. Know what the odds may be of them delivering on that?

I think I've got at least one figure pre-ordered for the next four months. Bluefin keeps hinting at a "Megaman surprise" for SDCC and it's got me licking my chops.

If you want Figma link I'd pre-order ASAP, a character with such western appeal is just more competition to get one. Situations like is why we need Bluefin to step in more.

I can only recommend sites that I've used myself. I checked the Tsuki-board review for BBTS and they seem legit, but definitely not anyone's first choice. Also, their price for Varia Suit Samus Figma is $65! For perspective, I'm paying $36 for my preorder from AmiAmi. At least since BBTS is in the US, shipping will be cheaper and fast.

If you really want Samus Figma and don't want to wait to see if the op sites get additional stock (I think a few have gotten them, but they sold out in minutes), then I would go with Nippon-Yasan: http://www.nippon-yasan.com/lang-en/figure-nisemonogatari/3110-metroid-other-m-figma-samus-aran.html
Their price (4500 JPY, ~$56) is above retail (3600 JPY, ~$45), but they are a much more trusted site. I have my first order from them currently on its way. My only problem with them has been that they took 10 days after payment to ship out my figure. Shipping to US should be about $14, so you're looking at $70 total. I guess that isn't much cheaper than BBTS, but I trust Nippon-Yasan more.

You could also try placing a backorder at Otacute: http://www.otacute.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_8&products_id=24828
I've heard of people having success with their backorders, but there is no guarantee.

Zero Suit Samus was released yesterday as planned. Expect payment requests for preorders.

Just payed for both Samus figures from AmiAmi:
Varia Suit Samus Figma - 2820 JPY (~$36)
Zero Suit Samus - 5750 JPY (~$73)
SAL Registered shipping - 1790 JPY (~$23)
Total including currency exchange: ~$134

The Zero Suit Samus is heavier than expected, making shipping a few extra $.

Tsuki-board review of Varia Suit Samus Figma: http://myfigurecollection.net/blog/3531
Apparently she was in stock at AmiAmi early this morning, but sold out again. From what I've read, she may be the most popular Figma ever released. A good sign for future video game figure adaptations.

If you want Figma Link, you better preorder soon ^_^

Hobby Search for Varia and AmiAmi for ZSS.

Yeah, scratch that. I have looked at way too many of those sites in the last couple weeks!

Got Varia from Nippon-Yasan, sorry.

Anywhere at all left for ZSS?

My bad for waiting until the last minute, but if anyone knows of anywhere I'd appreciate the info.
