stoped by my local kmart that is closing today and they had the following clearance discounts

25% off games and accesories

10% off clearance games and systems

they do not honor the local add so no extra deals on sale items.

25% doesn't sound like much when you add tax in there. I would also assume the games are near MSRP anyways.

Hm, none at all in Illinois; that is a good thing to see that none are closing around here, though the CAG in me wants a discount! hahah

I know exactly how you feel.

It's too bad that clearance games get less of a discount than regular games, when a KMart near me closed around 3 years ago, the discount on clearance games was at the same level as non clearance games.

Heh, when the Sears near me closed down they raised all the prices back to MSRP then took the clearance off of that. I wouldn't be surprised if Kmart does the same.

In Zanesville, Ohio here. We have 2 K-Marts and a crappy Sears that doesn't carry games. As far as I've heard the Sears is closing, and the K-Marts are to stay open.

Kind of sad though, with the great deals they had on games last year, and them stopping the deals now. I doubt that both K-Marts here will make it to year's end.

There's still time for them to turn around if they would just modernize their crap, and get the deals back.

My local Kmart is closing down. Oh well though. There's never anyone in the electronics department when I go.

I've always had the same problem, and I've never understood it. You can help yourself to almost anything else in the store by yourself, but the ONE section in the store you need an employee to get the items you want, nobody is EVER there. Then it turns into a game of hide-and-seek where you have to scour the store to find someone who's able/willing to help you, which normally ends with someone being paged on the intercom five minutes later, and another five to ten minutes later that person shows up to help you. Am I right?

That said, the only reason I ever put up with that kind of service were the kind of deals SHC Gamer posted, but those have obviously dried up significantly. Even if my local K-Mart was closing and offering deals like this, it wouldn't matter- getting the games out of the glass case would be a lost cause.

That's exactly what they did at the Kmart that's closing in my area. But that's usually what stores do during liquidations. When Enslaved: Journey to the West and Splatterhouse were on sale for $9.99 last week, that store had brought them back up to $19.99 MSRP and took the 25% off that. Still, I did find a few good deals that made the trip worth it. Last week, I got Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Fate for $8 and Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2 for $7. Unfortunately, when they do these sales, you have to either wait until the final week or do a lot of digging through those bargain bins to find a really good deal.

you see they built a huge amount of these stores in teh 70s and they were the shit back then so they probably were building these things like thewallmarts today. then well they peaked around the late 80s and stopped expanding but they had all these stores so could stay in buisness. now well amzon is here and wallmart blows em away so thats why they are slowly fading away =p

No surprise a majority of the store closings are in Michigan, pretty soon all we'll have here is Meijer and Wal-Mart.

Sears is closing here in Oak Ridge but Kmart is staying open. Surprised Sears lasted as long as it did, as the mall it is attached to is closed down and boarded up. Oh well. K-mart still gets a lot of business out of its layaway here though, so it'll live on for a while.

You remember shopping around in Kmart and hearing the blue light specials over the PA system? I am sure the kids today have no idea what I'm talking about.

It's the company to blame, not the severely understaffed employees. They expect one person to handle multiple departments at some times. And, they throw people who applied for soft lines work, like shoes, into electronics, an area they have no f*cking clue about. So, the result is exactly what you'd expect from a company that is trimmed to the max and is still doing business like it's 1990.

I used to work at a Kmart. The lack of an electronics person is just a matter of under-staffing to save money. When that one person who works electronics goes on break, customers are just expected to find an employee elsewhere until the break is over.

yet none of the kmarts near me are closing. I think it's just one area of MI.

None of mine closing where I live now, which is surprising. One in particular literally smells like urine when you enter the store.

One where I grew up is closing, that was the scene of a shooting spree that killed and injured a lot of people back in 1985. I'm actually surprised it lasted this long, considering that when I moved from the area 10 years ago, it was already a crappy store.

The thing that bugs me is, anytime K-Mart or Sears offer "X% off" coupons, video games are always excluded.

Kmart and Sears have done themselves in. They showed a glimmer of savvy last year with their gaming deals, but it seems that was a fluke, or some sort of experiment that the idiots who run the place just didn't want to give a go to for another year.

They run the place like it's the late 80's or early 90's: pastel decor, floors that seem to not have been replaced/cleaned for 20 years, the fact that they still carry VHS and audio cassette tapes, (seriously, some locations still do), and their full-time workers/customer base seems to have been middle-aged back in 1990, and are now just old as sin.

Kmart is stuck in a time warp, and Sears seems to be content with a dwindling supply of no-longer-made-in-American Craftsman crap and overpriced apparel.

They had the chance to turn things around. They'll still cling on in some places, at least until the old farts that frequent their stores throughout the week die off.

Most Sears locations here are really nice stores, they are clean and well lit, and are the complete opposite of Kmart. However most still have Christmas stuff out, which in turn tells me basically no one has shopped there this Xmas. They are packed with merchandise that no one is buying. Its clearly not a destination store anymore, its a store where you go when you can't find what you want at Walmart.

I don't know how Kmart survives with their high prices, other stores are revamping, expanding and stocking merchandise that customers actually want to buy, while Kmart still has merchandise from decades ago in some cases. They are double the cost of Walmart on everyday items in some cases, and in most cases they are at least 30-40% higher than Walmart on everyday items. The stores are dimly lit and dirty, and they are not well stocked. Merchandise is everywhere and there seems to be no organization to it. Expired food lines the shelves. The local asian market does a better job with keeping fresh food on the shelves than kmart does....

Kmart/Sears are also the only stores where I have seen games stolen right from the package, so I can definitely see why they lock them up, now I won't buy a game at Kmart or Sears unless it is fully shrinkwrapped and sealed, and I check to see if the disk is there, if it has even one tiny piece of wrap missing I will not buy it because there is no way Kmart/Sears is gonna give me a refund on a game because the disk is not there.

I for one will not shed a tear if Kmart closed Nationwide. They have a reputation of having cheap prices but that was many many years ago. Almost everything there is overpriced.

Look we're on the same page about Kmart but this is ridiculous. The elderly have to work too. One day you'll be that age and may find yourself not being able to get a job.

I'm 30 years old btw but I respect the elderly. You should learn some respect.

Too true about the expired food. Even at the store I used to work at, where the lady who ran the returns tried to keep up on the bad food, they still had too many cases of expired food being left out on the shelves.

It wasn't meant to be disrespectful, just an observation, which happens to be true. Kmart does NOT hire people for full time, and have not hired people for full time in about 20 years, thus my pointing out of the people that are full-time there are likely to be pretty old. And the customer base throughout the weekdays is old too. Pointing out fact isn't disrespectful.

I still have one kmart by me that has been my go to store for most stuff. It must be the only well maintained kmart, every other one ive been to is just a nightmare.

Of the 81 closing stores listed on their website, 11 are in Florida, 6 each are in Georgia, Michigan, and Ohio. Every other state has 4 or less on the list.

Pretty much this, I bought Mass Effect once there and it took forever. It's hard on the employees, they are understaffed and overworked, then they have to deal with frustrated customers who blame them for not having more people working.

The K-mart down the street from me is staying open, which I'm glad about, though I don't go there often.

To be fair a lot of Wal-Mart shoppers in the morning here are old folks to, a majority of the stores could be closed till 12pm or 1pm and it wouldn't hurt. It's either that or they are unemployed or on vacation/timeoff.

I think It's sad they don't have full time associates, even Wal-Mart has been getting into that the last few years. I don't know how anyone can survive part time unless they are going to college and are just earning spare money. Hell, full time at minimum wage is pretty hard to do unless your splitting utilities and rent with a room mate. I lived a good year + on $10 an hour 40 hours a week by myself before I got married and was lucky to have maybe $600 a year to myself. Needless to say tax return time was the best time :)

Just find something you really want, HIDE IT in a good spot in the store and come back when its the last week and they offer the highest % off. I did this with a few DVDs when Media Play closed, but really made out when Circuit City closed. I got new release blurays for $2. Brand new 360 & PS3 controllers for $4 and quite a few newly released games for under $5. Employee said, "wow, I thought this stuff was gone". :)
"haha"...??
???

My last experience there was horrible and I wasn't looking forward to ever going back, but literally the day I had my bad experience the announcement came and that explained it all. I was just throwing haha in there as a bit of possibly sarcasm if I do actually check out the sale or not. After reading most of these posts about the prices going back to normal price and then they take the 25% off its almost like a joke sale on their part. Actually I probably won't check the sale out unless it gets better or I find anything decent and worth wasting my time in that shitty store over.
One near me is closing. So will this 25% off apply to Rock Band 3 Keyboard Bundle, making it $19.50?
Nope. At the Kmart closing near me, they raised the price of the bundle back up to MSRP and then discounted it, making it $53.

I'm not trying to pick a fight. I understand what you're trying to say but you contradict yourself in this post. The elderly have to work too (I agree) but then you say also that you won't shed a tear if kmart closed nationwide. Well, guess what? All those lost jobs if Kmart closes aren't a good thing at all.

If you think it's ok that kmart closes down nationwide, then you should be ok with younger people pushing out the elderly for those jobs. Survival of the fittest works everywhere, not just where you want it to work.

----

Anyway, back to the "deal" -- which isn't one because liquidation sales are for suckers.

Does anyone know if you can use giftcards from Sears/Kmart to buy stuff at the closing stores? I don't want to make the trek if not, and they aren't answering the phones it seems.
