Figured I'd start this up because I had my first freeze last night, and I've heard CheapyD himself comment on the issue on every Cagcast they talk about the Vita.

Threads like this are generally useful over at XDA because a 'sleep-of-death' happens on a ton of cell phones and tablet devices. This way, we can share our stories about how our Vita froze, and possible solutions to prevent or fix the situation..however, must things like this boil down to the OS and running applications, which I'm sure is what happens to the Vita.

-Like I said, I had my first freeze yesterday. This was still during my initial first power on from 5pm the day before. I used every function and checked out all the settings and played 30 mins of Uncharted. I also reset the unit before I went to bed. Then left the Vita untouched from 11pm to 5pm the next day when I pushed the PS button and it awoke. Then I let it go to sleep again for 5 mins, pressed the PS button again, nothing. Power button, nothing! Held it down for 10 seconds, again, nothing. Had to hold it down for 33 seconds until it finally rebooted. So far, it hasn't frooze again, but it'll be untouched again and in sleep mode for 18 hours since the last use..

My Vita (3G version) froze this afternoon,
I was in the middle of launching near with no wifi access in a parking lot. The AT&T app came up and I canceled cause I couldn't find an open wifi hotspot where I was (and I'm not ready to jump on to 3G just yet). Went back to launch near again (i dunno why I did this) and it just got stuck trying to launch (looked like the app was loading - the little circles were spinning all around the app icon). Eventually the screen went blank, and the PlayStation button would just blink blue and nothing I pressed would turn it on. I ended up waiting about 4 hrs before trying it again (the PlayStation button was not blinking any more - I assumed the battery died). I just held on the the power button for about 15+ seconds and it started up as if it was a fresh boot (no apps loaded in the background - I was expecting near to be running). I played for a little while and eventually (30 minutes later) my battery died.

Mine has frozen everyday since launch.

Also- sometimes when I boot wipeout, the touch buttons won't work, but that's software specific.

Mine just froze for the first time trying to Power Down, dark screen, PS Home button lit blue. Had to Hold down power button and bring it up to safe mode and restart the ps vita system. No big deal though. All is well now. :)

only had a few problems. 1 is that stardust can't install and 2 i put airplane mode on and when i woke it from standby playing a game it asked me if i wanted to turn wifi back on

I haven't tried yet tonight, but ever since Friday night, every time I try multiplayer on Wipeout it tells me an error has occurred while trying to connect and to please try again.

I was trying to type in my facebook info and the touchscreen started freaking out. I hope it is just a software issue.

Edit: I was trying to copy some games from my ps3 to my vita and it just froze after it went on stand by. Thanks Sony.

Mine fell asleep during the initial startup. As I was installing the updated firmware it went to sleep, I turned it back on to heck the progress and then it went dark again, this time nothing brought it back until I held both the power butting and PS button, it rebooted within three seconds then. Just played some uncharted and will have to get used to the controls...idk why. I played a ninja Gaiden and it felt natural...go figure.

I just went to use "near", and it froze as it started. I can't shut it off, can't use any of the touch or button controls, and it eventually went into standby with the blue ps led button glowing.

I guess I just have to let it die? It really would've been more helpful if it had a pinhole reset button somewhere but I sure can't find one.

I've had it for less than a day btw.

Update: Thanks Carbogo, I don't see anything in the manuals about doing that, but holding the power button for over 15 seconds worked wonders. It just gave me a bunch of options to reboot and all is good again.

If you hold the power button down like 10-20 secs I think it resets.

While charging and playing Uncharted the touch screen is not very responsive. Once I unplug the charging cable the touch screen works fine.

I noticed this in the Uncharted demo at Gamestop, I was wondering wtf was up with that.

Mine did this last night and freaked me out. Powered it off, but it would not turn off it just had the circle ring graphic running in the center of a black screen and the PlayStation button flashed blue. Happened after it had sat all day and I played 15 minutes of Crush PSP and switched over to try the Unit 13 demo which dropped all sound about 4 minutes into the demo went to back and out and el freezo. Not a great experience to have happen the second time I play with the system. All is working now. Mutant Blobs Attack had me smiling again quickly.

My Vita froze Wednesday night. I couldn't figure out how to reset it. I started by holding down the power button, but it didn't reset. Then I tried working in the PS button. Finally I just held the power button down forever and it reset. Not sure how long you have to hold it, but it felt like forever. I'm sure it was probably only 10 seconds and I was just being impatient. :)

My 3g model was freezing a couple times a day, and I had to keep holding down the power to go into what the "ps vita specialist" was calling safe mode. They ended up telling me to return mine and get another, saying her notes said if you have to use that method more than once every few months than there is an issue :( Hoping to have better luck with this one. Oh and the lady on the phone said it was 30 secs to get it to reset to the safe mode screen.

Take some ginkgo biloba and read the thread.

^yeah, I would say its on par with just random freezes, nothing major, hell my Sony WiFi BD player locks up almost weekly..after my first freeze that made me post this thread, I haven't had any SOD's or freezes. I did lock it up b/c I took the memory card out while it was in sleep mode, which I know, stupid of me, but figured it may not matter..it did.

However, the other night I was playing Tales From Space on the 'Star' level in the first world. Well, I had paused it at some point, unit slept, went to play again and the sound for the game was stuck in an annoying glitched bleep. I long pressed the PS button to get home, then clicked the game again. Sound was fine, but then 3 seconds letter it glitched again. Only way to fix it was completely swipe closing the game and re-starting the game. Oh well..

I've seen some weird hangs. When I tried to play Lumines from retail cartridge (after having the demo on my memcard), the installer hanged and I needed to rebuild the database to fix it. The warning said it could take several hours, but thankfully it was done in about a minute, and it fixed the problem.

It seems like a good idea to keep a backup of your VITA in case something really gets hosed. Unfortunately it seems to want to do a full backup each time, so if you have 15GB of PSP games, expect it to sit for a couple of hours.

Luckily I haven't had any freezes so far. However, I did notice some very faint vertical lines on the screen whenever I open the content manager and the gray background pops up. Anybody else experiencing this? I checked out my buddies wifi model and its the same as well. Not sure if that's normal or not. Other than that its been smooth sailing for me.

I've had one freeze. I suspended it while playing a daily tournament in Hot Shots. Had to hard boot it after that. I'm planning on calling customer service every time it happens, it's the only way we can "encourage" them to fix it in a firmware update.

I've had 4 freezes so far, 3 of which were the same "standby mode with something still running, come back in a few hours and it won't turn on --> recovery mode then reboot".

The other was Lumines loading... forever. When I backed out and tried to access any other app, the system froze. Same thing, recovery menu says the day but damn it's so dumb.

I had my first freeze since I bought the Vita at launch. I was playing Unit 13 demo and I notice their was no sound, and I indeed had the valume all the way up. I press the PS button, and went to my friends list and it locked up while loading my friends list, so I powered it down and got the spinning circle in the middle of black screen and blinking blue PS light. I just held down the power button for 30 seconds, and choose Restart Vita when "safe mode" appears.

I know this is a hardware issue, but I haven't seen another similar topic for those... has anyone noticed one shoulder button feeling a good bit less responsive than the other? For me it's the Right, but a Google search found a few instances of people having the opposite problem. I have to apply a good bit more pressure and hit it just right to get the R button to trigger properly. Now that I've downloaded some PSP titles, I noticed it's quite a pain to even keep it engaged for a prolonged period (like when crouching for cover on Killzone Liberation).

I don't have any other friends that have it yet, so I guess I'll have to go try a few other demo units, and see how they feel. Maybe I'm just crazy, but it's really starting to bug me, and I want to go ahead and return/exchange it if necessary while I'm well within the return period at Best Buy.

I've gotten an error code once before starting Harry potter, and another while playing which sucked cause I had to replay a long section. Other than that ,no issues.

had a freeze with mine when setting up G3 with ATT had to hold power for 20 seconds. Thankfully a lot of these glitches/freezes are easily fixed.

I got mine yesterday at 7pm and it has frozen about 6 times so far. I get the blinking blue light. It happens when I'm downloading a demo and have a few more queued up. Oh and they take forever to download and error out a lot. ugh!

Have you downloaded the most recent firmware, 1.61?

Mine hasn't froze--i.e. crashed--but every once in a while, especially after/during the use of Content Manager (hooked up to my PS3) I'll lose the touchscreen when it goes into sleep mode and can't peel away the skin to get back to the menu. It's almost always when I'm hooked up, and I have to unhook it go back and forth between pressing the Home button and the power button (I've never had to hard reset, but I can't make it reset because the damn button's on the touchscreen). That's happened two or three times, I guess.

ok I found out how to not have it freeze with stuff queued up. I just have to let the system turn the screen off on it's own instead of hitting the power button to turn it off. Also, that keeps the downloads going instead of stopping when you hit the power button.
