Multiple iOS Devices in iTunes

I can't find any decent info anywhere for this...

I've got an iPhone and I just bought an iPad. I'd like to have some things on both, but I don't want to put my tunes on the pad. I would imagine that once I sync the pad to iTunes I'll have an option to not have any mp3s on the thing but still have some programs on both.

Am I wrong in that assumption?
 
Yes, each has it's own settings. Click the icon in the sidebar for your iPad and then go through the various tabs to choose what you want to sync. We have 2 iPhones and an iPad, and they all have different stuff on them (and much of the same stuff too).
