Not sure why Sony didn't try this with the PSVita since it would've certainly helped it sales. My guess is MS looked at the Apple business model & wants a piece of the pie. I like the idea but would still pay it off way earlier than 2 yrs since I'd be using flips/store credit to get it done.
Hopefully, this isn't gonna be the option instead of a pure price drop since that's what everyone's waiting for that would piss people off. I guess the vita owners could really enjoy it as newer versions get released down the line.

Try it with the Vita, now? I think you would need a catalog of games to try it with. No way could it be done even now - let alone at launch.

The idea is appealing to the same people who get payday loans. If that's the case then you shouldn't be buying the system. Save up until you can afford it. If you need more examples go look at all the trouble the banks (and numerous people are in) due to substandard house loans. Yes shame on the banks, but shame on the people as well - you certainly should know that you cannot afford a $400,000 house making $50,000 a year. Ooops, that's my soapbox of the night.
 
Yeah this sounds like you are leasing the damn system. If you can't pay for a console outright (or on credit card etc), you shouldn't pick it up since you are paying a premium for something that would become obsolete down the road and you then couldn't trade it in.
 
If you don't even have the money to buy the console outright... Where do you get the money for the extra accessories and games? o_O
 
I definitely like the idea as an option but it really does sound like said option is for people who suck at math.

$99 upfront for a no hard drive system + $360 ($15/month * 24 months) for the two year contract with Xbox Live = $459

The same 4GB Xbox 360 Kinect bundle is $300 + two years of Xbox Live @ $60/year = $420

Or Xbox Live @ $10/month * 24 months + $300 Xbox Kinect bundle = $540

The only way you are saving money with this if you want to pay for Xbox Live on a monthly basis instead of annually.

The only thing that may make this worthwhile is adding web content such as streaming video or XBLA games at no additional charge.
 
I suppose another way of thinking about it is $99 upfront, and then borrowing $320 at 6% apr for 2 years.
It's a way to do an end-around the price drop at e3 assumption.

Still, I think a more popular model might be free 4gb console + kinect + gold with a $20/mo contract for two years.
It ends up being even more money ($480), but it would sell much, much better.
 
This idea is more appealing if you are going with XBox since you have to pay a fee for Xbox Live Gold anyways. But with the PS3 the online is free, I can't see them doing this with a console that already costs only $250 and has a 160GB hard drive. I assume 160GB is more than enough space for most PS3 users unless you plan on loading a ton of movies and music on it as I have a 320GB hard drive in my XBox 360 and I am using a fraction of it and I am obsessed with downloading theme's and pics. Still we all know its a bad deal.

I believe they're talking about PS Plus in relation to this.

That said, "PSN will always be free" WAS true. In order to save face, they renamed it "SEN" (Sony Entertainment Network). Now the stage is set to charge for the online usage of the PS4. Count on it.

theyre doing pretty well selling ps3s at the price they are now at most they may take off 50 bucks but id think theyd drop the price of the vita before they touch the ps3 again.
 
I'm confident that both the 360 and the ps3 will have significant price drops announced at E3 in order to really slow down the Wii U's launch. They will want a smaller install base to catch next year.

I knew someone would drill down into the semantics and claim that the account is not a PSN account but has access to the PSN to buy things. I don't buy it. I'm willing to bet that they will charge for mltiplayer on the ps4. If they do, you send me $100 in PayPal.

What does that have to do with anything? You said that they changed PlayStation Network into SonyEntertainmentNetwork, which is false. You log into PSN with your SEN account like you log into Xbox Live with your Windows Live account.
 
There is a reason why Rent a Center is staying in business. There will be people that only have $100 and want a system.

jwk94 pointed out your inaccuracy and created a new line of discussion to which I joined. Neither of us touched the rest of your post, so there was no reason to throw down this paypal bet like anybody was even challenging you on that point.

Alright well forget the PSN naming convention comment then. I think that they will indeed charge for their network access much like MS. They'll probably come in $10 cheaper though.

Also, we're in a recession so this is a way that a parent can get their child something they want & not have a huge financial burden going forward at $15/month. TBH it's cheaper than adding a cellphone line with a data package.

Also, people spend tons on other $hit they can't afford that's way more than a PS3 & $100 upfront. Not to mention RAC is just 1 company you still have Aaron's too. There will be a market for this & people will buy just b/c they see the $100 price tag upfront. Hell, I was able to stack a $50 instant gc deal with one of these I'd do it too.
 
It's a context thing. They're looking to do the same thing Microsoft is doing by having Live (a name that is going away to just be cloud services tied to Windows) and XBLA accounts be the same. On Windows 8 you can log into a machine you've never used before with your unified account credentials and it will pull down all of your preferred settings and link you to all of your MS cloud stuff.

SEN accounts are a larger group of services beyond what PSN offers. For Sony to try to grab a lot of consumer loyalty it makes sense to offer a unified account like MS, Apple, Google, Yahoo, etc.
 
I strongly suspect this is much more about things like Netflix than game sales, though it would be hoped to enhance that a bit. Sony and Microsoft want to own a big chunk of the living room entertainment focus with powerful boxes that can do a lot more than something like a Roku or the services available through Blu-ray players and newer TVs.

Keeping the focus means offering a seemingly comparable price. A lot depends on what cooperation they get from those companies and how they plan to market this. Obviously, the part of Time Warner that sells HBO subscriptions won't like it but the part of Time Warner that sells data service and HBO Go subscriptions will like it quite a lot.

Unrelated, I was at Costco earlier today and noticed a very cheap Sony Blu-ray player that looked like a mini-PS3. It was very minimal for $60, with only HDMI and optical outputs, plus a USB port. If it wasn't modeled on the PS3 Slim it is remarkably similar for a coincidence. I wonder if that is what the final version of the PS3 will look like, carrying it to the end of its career.
