I just bought Soul Caliber 2 for Gamecube at Blockbuster for $14.99. It was a good deal I think. I know it's 9 months old but I had to wait till I saw it cheaper than $19.99. I had to wait, because I had Soul Caliber for Dreamcast when it first launched in Japan on the date 8/99 about 5 years ago and personally, their wasn't much of a differance.

Now I love the Soul Caliber series, but Tekken and Virtua Figher 4 seem to be more fun for me. When Tekken 4 was released, every video game magazine talked pretty bad about it. Saying it wasn't much of an upgrade from Tekken Tag. I really agreed with them on that point. But what really pissed me off came months later.

Soul Caliber 2 came out for every Nex-Gen system. I guess it sold pretty well and I'm happy for that, but It also really annoyed me. Everyone bought it, loved it and thought it was the gratest 3-D fighter. Even the game magazines thought so, (besides Virtua Fighter 4.) But was it a HUGE upgrade from the first Soul Caliber?

Personally I really didn't think so. The main arguements that gave Tekken 4 bad reviews from both magazines and players is that it only really had two new characters (Marduk and Steve Fox and I'm not including Christie becaue she's a rehash of Eddy Gordo), but even Jin's style was totally diffrent, so that could make 3 new characters. Now how many new characters does Soul Caliber 2 have? Talim, Rapheal and the console exclusive charcter (Link, Spawn and Hiehatchi). Cassandra and Yun Sung were just rehashes of older charcters, right? And Necrid is a mix of everyone so I don't count him.) In total thats 3 totally new characters.

Besides the 3 new characters in SC 2, what changed from 1 to 2? Music, Backgrounds and a Weapon Master mode I beat in one day. That wasn't worth my $50, and I'm sorry for anyone that thought it was.

Why did everyone love Soul Caliber 2 and not Tekken 4 or Virtua Fighter 4? Was it because it's "easier" to play? Let me know, I'm curious why some people highly regard this 3-D fighter better than all others. Soul Caliber was great 5 years ago, on a Dreamcast when it was revolutionary. Now I don't see much diffrance between this upgrade and Tekken's upgrade.

It's a different style of play for one thing. VF and TK always felt cramped to me. But more than that it probably is the easier to pick up game.

VF practically amounts to learning REAL martial arts in order to be an effective player more so that just as street fighter game. TK slowly became more and more complicated, the first game most people could pick up and have a far shot it was a bit cheesy but you could still beat a cheesy player if you recognized his skill level quickly enough and adjusted to it. Later incarnations introduced stance specific moves and more complex combos.

SC2 may have these things but like the original tekken and verymuch like the original games it was based on it's still easy for people who arnt very good making it a nice choice regardless of your skill level.

....and it has Link. Actually what I mean to say is it has more interesting characters atleast visually(with the exception of that boring Todd McFarlane character... no not Spawn :p the other one.)

Oh and almost forgot the space of time between SC and SC2 was a bit longer I think than TK, If you look at the initial responce to the VF4 sequel it was a greater response than TK but the less "sim" nature of it helped later.

maybe they're mistaking it for the word "calibre" and not as in Excalibur which is the way I think namco is using it.
why do so many people spell calibur with an "e"? i mean you own the game. just look at it.
I just had 10 Corona's so I wasn't thinking strait when I wrote that post. If you want to ignore it, that would make me very happy.

I love you guys. You're my 10th best friends, right next to my 9th best friend, the guy from Styx who sings "DOMO ARIGATO Mr. ROBOTO."

I think Hiyatchi is the dumbest person they could have picked for a representative of ps2...Link makes sense...Spawn doesnt make sense but he's cool!...They could have picked crash...i mean im not for crash in a fighting game but it would have made sense...Or how bout Hyabusa? I know its an XBOX exclusive but DOA was always on PS before...Or maybe some like say...Titus from FFX...now that would have kicked ass...or cloud...or anyone from final fantasy...but HIYATCHI?! Come on!

It must be important gaming industry news that Rodimus Donut does not like Soul Calibur 2. Stop the presses!

I haven't played T4 or VF4, so I can't really comment on them. It comes down to personal preference why it happens to be so popular. I didn't like SC2 at first but it sort of grew on me. No, it wasn't anything ground-breaking, but neither was Tekken 2. It's just good old fashioned weapon based combat which no other fighter on the market (well MK possibly) can match.

Styx sucks ass!

That being said, Soul CalibUr II, is a really good game.

Revolutionary,... no.

I haven't played SC, since I sold it 5 years ago. Right out of the package, me and my wife sat down to play.
It was all new to me. Story, characters, controls,...everything.

After fiddling around with the setup a bit, we started a battle.

My wife whooped my ass. Then, I whooped hers. I joked about how rusty I was, since the last fighting game I'd played, was MVC2 in the arcade.

We continued on, for about 2 hours, and I was done. I had a large number of wins, over my wife, and I was satisfied. She kept at it, and I went to work.

Well, she played for the next 4 days, and during them, she'd ask if I was ready for another challenge. I declined, saying I didn't really want to.
Well, the thing is, I was just button mashing when I beat her. Now, she's had 4 days of training, and going to various websites, to find great linked combos, and such.
I know how I'd fare against her.

Problem is,....the main thing that got me hyped about this sequel, was LINK.
I'll tell you this,....Link, sucks. He has cool moves, looks great, sounds great,...but I don't think he is a balanced opponent.

I used him a lot, and then he became a headache.

Maybe I didn't give him enough time, but I lost interest in the game rather quickly. When my friends want to play a fighter, I'll pop it in. As MK:DA and CvsSNKEO, suck, on the GC.(controls shaq up the fingers)

Other than that, the game will just fill another slot, on the played-save for the kids-shelf.

NOW,....if NINTENDO would only re-release KILLER INSTINCT!!!!!

My dreams would come true! I don't care if they don't update the graphics and sound. Just subtract the Rare logo, and we're game.

Please, don't turn this into a Rare lecture. Its only a distant dream.

SC2 also gained a bit of popularity because it was one of the games created by the "triforce" partnership between Namco,Nintendo and Sega.

Spawn and "ToddyMac" came along curtesy of Sega I believe, If you recall the Naomi power Spawn game they made and I beleive Spawn: Armageddon was a namco game. Namco is also working on The next StarFox game while sega was responsible for F-zeroGX and AX.

Anyway Xbox got Spawn because Sega was pushing them, Nintendo got to add link for the Cube because it's their character AND system and namco a former heavy force for PSone didnt have much to choose from, They;d already done Yoshimistu from tekken and they didnt have many other humanoid characters so the only choice they could make for a fighting game was a Hiehatchi "relative".

Crash was is no longer a sony exclusive character, nor is he a Namco, nintendo OR sega character.

I don't hate Soul Calibur 2? I think you didn't read my first post correctly. I believe I mentioned that I "Loved" Soul Caliber, but did't understand why people loved Sould Caliber 2 more than any other fighting game in history.

In fact you're a perfect example. Just read your own post. You haven't played VF 4 of Tekken 4, correct? Then you wouldn't know know what I'm talking about.

Maybe people missied my point. Again, I will say it again, I do not think Soul Calibur 2 is a bad game. I just want to know why people or the general gaming public over looked other 3-D fighters. The earlier posts are good examples of this. READ MY FIRST POST CLEARLY!!!

Again, I DO NOT DISLIKE SOUL CALIBUR 2!!!!!!!

Calm down there chief.

If you had read my first post clearly you would've realized I pointed out you posted in the wrong forum.

Anyway, I have played T4 in the arcades but not on PS2; VF4 I haven't played period. I have played all the games in the series before that though. Yes, I do know what you are talking about even though your post contradicts itself.

I'm a perfect example of what? I didn't say I loved the game, which I don't. I just stated that it is the only weapon based fighter on the market, which may contribute to the appeal to 'everyone' that you speak of. You should crack open some more Coronas, you're getting cranky.

Maybe I'm being rude, and honestly I don't mean to.

I was just pointing out the fact that you, and I quote, "I haven't played T4 or VF4, so I can't really comment on them."

I wrote thinking you never seriously got invloved in a 3-D fighter, besides SC 2, before. Maybe I'm wrong. But, I'm trying to get feedback from people who are familiar with all 3-D games, not just SC 2.

And Since SC 2 was made on PS2, X-Box and GC I figured I'd post it in the: General Gaming & Industry News. Was I wrong? If so alert the moderator and tell them to put it in the correct board.

I didnt' mean my post as an insult to you.

he make a good point about it being the only weapon fighter out of them, but I guess that goes to the point of being a differnt style of game from the punching fighter types.

It is shocking that the only SEGA frachise to gain a large following (I know there are others but VF is the biggest) in Japan is the one that never seems to catch on with American auidences.

Cassandra plays a little differently than Sophitia. Yunsung also plays differently than...Hwang? His crane stance determines much of his gameplay. I think Cervantes also plays a little differently than he used to.

In general, there is a bigger emphasis on sidestepping. Ring-outs are, I think, harder.

And Talim kicks ass.

Cervantes plays exactly the same from SC 1 to 2. Trust me, he's my favorite character. In fact the only thing new about him is a new grab, and maybe a couple tweaks to his moves.

That wasn't worth my $50, and I'm sorry for anyone that thought it was.

Why feel sorry for me? I bought it at launch and loved it, and recently picked up the PS2 version for my import PS2 so I can play it in the back (courtesy of play-asia's great deal).

I don't like complex fighters. I picked up Virtua Fighter 4:Evo based on everyone's praise and recently traded it in. It's just not my game. I don't want to have to sit & learn how to play a character in a fighting game. Give me a pick-up-&-play game like SC2 any day.

I picked this game up late too. I didn't play the first SC (but now that I own a dreamcast I plan too), but I'm loving this one. It is pretty easy, but that didn't take away from the fun factor.

Pick-up-&-play games aren't really my thing. I guess that's the reason it sold well. DOA 3 was the same way. I love games that require alot of training. People might think that's boring but it's fun for me.

Virtua Fighter 4 is very hard to pick up, and it's definatly not for people that like pick-up-&-play games. But I had so much fun learning the VF 4 system, it so technical, it scary.

I like Tekken, but I never liked the Virtua Fighter series. Virtua Fighter is one of those games that you gotta be a die hard in order to enjoy. I like fighting games but it's one of my least favorite genres. I like a fighting game that I can pick up and play, not having to master a character yet, in order to play it. Soul Calibur and Tekken are like that. I like to take my time and learn as I go.

In VF I get my ass whooped on bad and it makes me not wana learn the game. Plus I never liked any of the characters, and the combos are kinda hard to pull off. In Soul Calibur and Tekken, I can learn as I go, still have fun, and not have to worry about the AI being extremely cheap on me.

I like Soul Calibur the best though. I love the fighters, it's deep enough for people who wana master it, and it's simple enough for people who wana play it and not have to worry about the AI being far superior. Tekken is the same way, but I like to use weapons over martial arts.

I HATE the AI in soul calibur 2. The easier levels are too easy for me. The harder levels just unreasonably guard-impact EVERYTHING, regardless of how much you mix up highs and lows. I love playing with people though. That's the only time I play it anymore. I think soul calibur is much better than tekken.
