Advice in buying a bike

I'm about to head into college soon and has exactly 105$ left after blowing it in games. So I need a bike but i really have no clue on what makes a bike good. I've been told to buy some walmart bikes to piece together. I also was offered for 50$ for a 2 year used target bike in fair conditions. I've been searching craigslist but that place is really sketchy with pictures of bikes at a angle where I can't see the entire bike. :(

Any suggestions? I live in Chicago,

grab a cheap one off craigslist. I've bought bikes off craigslist (in chicago as a matter of fact) and got some sweet deals. then again, my price point is a bit higher than yours but you will get something decent for $100 on craigslist if you look hard enough.
