A used 360 copy could run you $25+ (there's a demo on XBL, actually), but if you have a decent PC then definitely try to get Hitman 2: Silent Assassin and Blood Money as they are arguably the best entries in the franchise. However as for story, I don't think you'd be lost. Having a grasp on the gameplay and stealth mechanics is going to be really nice going into this game, though.
Something else to consider: there's also a Hitman HD Collection for PS3 and 360 coming out sometime in the future. The release was supposedly delayed from October 15th to January 1st, which is a shame since it would've been perfect timing for just about anyone trying to get into the series before Absolution.
