Decided to do some PvP against the Bell covenant in the more open area. Got beaten by two mages (one at the beginning and one at the end of my run), two other times by the same person, and managed to beat one person then lost immediately afterward to another person who got summoned around the same time.

After my terrible luck, I finally went through more of the campaign. Got to one of the last places in the game. This may be one of the harder places I've gone through other than some areas I went to earlier than I should have. I went through to the end, but then was disappointed when I got there. There didn't seem to be a boss, or even a new covenant to join (from the enemies in the area, I was assuming the dragon covenant was here). I turned off the game and went to look at a walkthrough, and found out that the end had an optional boss I could have fought.

Then stuff got really hard.

The optional boss wrecked me when I aggroed it. I went back by myself and, once again, got killed fairly easily. I tried to get some summons but they got disconnected. Got some more, then got invaded as we got close to the boss. The invader killed me with some BS hex (pretty sure I dodged it before it hit me). Once again used some summons and one guy got killed before the boss. Went in and we got beat. Got some summons again and got invaded in the same area. Started backing up to heal from the NPC damage, then everyone got disconnected.

Was trying to summon more people and some guy decides to invade near the bonfire. We started going at it with melee, then someone I tried to summon earlier finally arrived. The invader got scared (probably thought it was someone from the blue covenant) and got back to start using the bow. I went "bad idea buddy" and used my lightning spears to take him out. Managed to get to the end with the summon, but they disconnected early in the boss fight and I ended up losing.

Tried one more time with summons, got invaded halfway through the level, managed to beat the invader but one of my summons was defeated. Used an NPC summon with the remaining player to face the boss, got beat again since the player summon disconnected halfway through the fight.

Finally decided to quit and will try again tomorrow. Seriously though, that might have been the most invasions I've had in one area. Ironically, it was all after I had gone through the area once already.

And WTF with all the disconnects? I've done probably 50 or so summons (either helping other people or using them myself) and I don't think I've ever had any disconnects. I've had a few people die mysteriously - but it is usually when they run off by themselves and I assume they just fell off something or got kill by mobs.

I have a really bad internet connection (still have DSL at my house). It's worse whenever someone else is using the computer or something, which is most of the time. So yeah, I'm constantly getting disconnected from others, both as a summon and with people helping me. It's probably worst when I get invaded since people get phantom backstabs/strikes on me. At this point, I typically disconnect purposefully during invasions if I don't have other phantoms with me.

^ Ah, that explains it. I wonder if I got phantom backstabbed so much more in the previous games because I had a worse internet connection then. I think I was at maybe 1 up / 5 down when I played the first Dark Souls and now I'm at 5 up / 30 down. I know the dedicated servers probably help as well though.

By the way, I've found that the mage dudes in Shrine of Amana drop Twinkling Titanite pretty frequently. I had seen people mention farming other areas but I've gotten 5 or 6 from there and I'm nowhere near exhausting them yet. Of course I am wearing the Gold Serpent Ring + 1 which probably helps a bit. They drop a lot of Archduke stuff too (robes, gloves, etc). I've gotten as many twinkling titantes from them as I had gotten during the entire game up to that point.

I also killed the gecko near the entrance to Drangleic Castle and got a titanite slab - only the second I've gotten. I think the first was in a chest behind a Pharros lockstone door pretty early on in the game.

I traded about 10 small smooth and silky stones and maybe 5 regular ones to the crows and got 1 twinkling titanite from one of the regular ones.

Since I was up to 7, I decided to splurge one on upgrading my Havel armor a notch. I'm still not sure if I want to go with that indefinitely though. I kind of want to wait to see what else I find before using any more - but by the time I figure it out, I have a feeling I'll be done with the game ;).

I also need to go with a new weapon. I have the Fire sword up to +8 but I feel like I'm not getting much out of it. I see some phantoms doing 10x the damage I do. I need to go with a Greatsword or something like that. I just hate their slow animations. But then once again, all the better weapons also need twinkling titanite...

Be careful about disconnecting too much from invasions. You can actually get banned (in that playthrough) from the online portion of the game. Look up the item, "bone of order" in your item inventory. The text describes it there.

That's interesting. I mean, I guess I get it. I've only disconnected 4 times (3 on purpose, one because of my connection).

Would using the black soapstone be a better idea then?

Honestly, I just wish there was a way to not get invaded at all while still being able to help people in co-op. I'm pretty sure I'm getting invaded by people that are not only way better than me at this game, but people that are way higher level. My soul memory is pretty high (2.4 million or so) since I tend to just buy up everything in a merchant's inventory at least once, even if I have no use for it.

I switched over to a claymore I bought in the shaded woods and like it quite a bit, it isn't as fast as the fire long sword but it is still fairly speedy. I also like that the 1-hand R2 is a thrust as opposed to the bastard sword which is an overhead chop. Though the great sword is a beast of damage when fully upgraded. I was also tempted by the Zweihander, but didn't want to bring my STR above 20 (it's 24), it also starts off with B scaling.

That was it, I knew someplace recent was dropping them like candy and I've got something like 35 I'm not even using lol.

Get the moonlight sword and never look back! :D  If people didn't have such bad connections, this is the type of PvP I'm trying to have:

Fuck these slow as dirt animations that they purposely put in here compared to dks. Got poisoned and used an item that took so long for the character to actually use i died.

I hate the long animation for using fortune coins. I mistakenly used one once before I went to clear out a basilisk nest and one of them was coming near me. Luckily, it just stood there while the animation finished.  :)

I can give recommendations based on your build or if you prefer certain weapon types.

That wouldn't help with being invaded. Black soapstone only works when you want to send other phantoms you summoned home, or sending yourself home from a host world.

Is it just me but after the Xbox DS update the lock on distance is reduced? Having the enemy be much more closer to you to lock on at first. I noticed this while playing today after my friend was complaining about it for awhile before then as well.

^ I thought maybe it was just the area I was in, but I'm, noticing lock-on in the PS3 version to be pretty bad the last few days. But it's been a week or two since we had an update.

I don't have the exact stats in front of me but I'm around 23-26 for all Int, Faith, Dex, and Str (with Str maybe at 28 actually). I forget which is which (Vigor vs Vitality) but I have the one that allows you to carry more weight up pretty high and the one for health pretty low. I have ADP around 12 or so. Currently I'm pretty heavily armored (mostly Havel stuff) but I could give up a little of that for a heavier weapon.

I like using faster weapons and also usually like a shield with me. But that might just be a leftover from the last two games where I did winged spear + shield nearly all the time. I haven't done that at all this game. I'm trying to go more with avoiding attacks this time. I've been using the Fire Longsword (now at +8) for nearly the entire game. I don't like its short reach and it breaks too easily.

I just realized after watching the video Jodou posted that I need to equip different things in my shield hand. I've been keeping sword, chime, and staff all in my right hand and just the shield in left.

Speaking of that video, how does he make the magic attack with his sword? I've never seen a sword do different attacks like that. Is that just the R2 attack? I forget that even exists most of the time.

I think one thing I need to do for sure is start increasing my endurance again. I'm getting tired out and staggered far too often. I did that a lot at the beginning but haven't recently.

So beyond which weapons to use, what are the best chimes and staffs? I've been using the Archduke version of both. I just recently got some new chime that has super-fast casting time but can't be used for miracles (only hexes).

So this evening when my kids wanted to watch for a bit, I cleared the
Spoiler
.

Oh, one more question. How in the hell do you get to those treasures WAY out on the lava blocks in Iron Keep? And also the one under the flame in the first room? To get the one a few feet under the stairs near the bonfire I equipped all my best fire gear and used the Flash Sweat pyro (which doesn't make the noise that it used to in the first game - doesn't seem like it is working, actually) and I couldn't even get to that and back without dying. I had to run back under to retrieve my souls. But the picking up animation is so slow. I couldn't imagine doing the one with multiple jumps and a treasure chest at the end. Unless you can cool off the lava somehow? I also can't get past those fire salamanders in Forest of Fallen Giants. They are just relentless with the fireballs.

By the way, the Shrine of Amana area is hurting for summon helpers. Every time I put my sign down I was called in seconds. And when I tried to get a few to help me I had to grab them as soon as they appeared or someone else got them. It looks like a good place to grind sun medals if you want to max that covenant out. I already did that myself before I even got there though.

Its always been short and wonky from what I noticed. Not sure if the update did anything to it though.

If your dex and str are similar,  then Claymore is very good for its move-set. If you want more damage, then mastadon greatsword since it has way more focus on strength. Also, can't really go wrong with a mace (short range, but a lot of enemies are weak to strike), and large/great club (same reason as mace, but larger range). Those all only require titanite to upgrade. But seems like the claymore would be a nice upgrade if you don't want to collect twinkling titanite or dragon bones atm. :)

As for those magic attacks on swords. Some swords are imbued with a strong attack projectile that drains durability. I find it funny that a lot of the people I see do nothing, but spam them to the point their weapon nearly breaks.   :dunce:

Those items, you need your best fire gear obviously. Take a flame quartz ring, eat a small orange burr, flash sweat, and roll yourself into those urns that have water (boosts fire resistance) inside the cathedral. Once your on the lava, spam two or three life gems, and start running.  :whee:

I think I just got a Mastadon Greatsword last night. And you can add an elemental attack to that, right? What would you suggest for that? Magic?

What are dragon bones for? It seems like I got one of those last night as well and I just assumed it was a consumable item.

As for the fire - what is out there? Are they worth the trouble? I know the one by the bonfire was not (I think it was just a human effigy). I guess those are meant to be one-way trips, eh? I just can't see doing that as not only do you have to do all that, you have to sprint and time your jumps just right. If they were a straight shot, that might be one thing. I suppose I can get the one in the room easily enough (even if I die). I was just hoping there was some way to "turn off" the fire - but I guess not.

Also, where is the guy who sits in the chair in Drangleic castle? The one you meet in Shaded Woods and again in Black Gulch. Supposedly there is a cave to drop down to, to find him. But you get attacked so much in that place I never spent much time looking for it. It also never seemed I was in a place that would drop to anything, actually.

I think it's a bonfire ascetic and a human effigy on the lava. The one under the bull flame I was able to get it just by using flash sweat and the flame res ring and I only have 20 in Vigor, though I died before I was able to roll away but I was able to walk in and pick up my souls off the ground, it's a key.

The special attacks are done by two-handing and then R2ing I believe.

If you want to try another spear type weapon you might try the pike, I forgot where I found it (somewhere in Earthen Peak) but it has super long reach and R2 is a short jog and then a forward thrust which looks badass, though it doesn't do as much damage as the winged spear for some reason despite it being so heavy.

Petrified dragon bones? If so those are more important than Twinkling Titanite as they seem to be more rare and level up nearly all of the Boss Soul Weapons.

In Drangleic Castle he is underground as you said. From the first bonfire, to the right there is a room with a bunch of knight statues kneeling that come to life and the doors that open from the souls and two golems in the back. I believe it is the back left door that you need to open and there is a hole in the ground there that you fall through where you will find him and another bonfire. If you have not done so, be careful because each of those doors (except the front right that opens up a real path) has a Ruin Sentinel... which are my least favorite enemies by far haha

I am curious of what is out on the fire too, if it is even really worth getting.

I finally finished the game last night and rounded up and tried to figure out a real build now for NG+ but I just don't like my character that much haha. I feel like I fell into a weapon and armor set pretty comfortably in the past two games but this one I am just not digging anything in particular. I am a Bandit and so I thought maybe I would respec to use the Bow of Want and the Curved Dragon Greatsword, but even those are just 'meh.' My armor is all over the place, though my constant is my chest of Vengarl +5. My biggest thing is that I have been using my Dragonrider Bow maxed out and so my petrified dragon bone supply is slim. Is there a way to farm these?

While I debate how I want to build that character I decided to create a new one now that I beat the game. This time I want to be a Hex user with the Moonlight Greatsword. I am already fairly far into the game since I know exactly where to go and what to do. Plus having Soul Arrows early in the game makes it quite a breeze.

I've had company recently so haven't played hardly at all.  Played about 30 mins last night and just beat The Rotten.  Pleasantly surprised to find that

Spoiler

I used those souls to increase my STR and DEX enough to finally equip the DragonRider Bow and reinforced it once using the one petrified dragon bone I had.

I have also been using the Fire Long Sword (+8 right now) the whole game so far and I'd like to switch.  I have Magic Mace at +2 but I only use it for skeletons at this point since its reach is so short.  I don't really have any regular titanite, though.  I found I can farm Large Titanite in Black gulch.  Is there a place to farm regular titanite so I can upgrade a new weapon, and maybe some more of my armor?

Once you find the dull ember in

There are enemies in Harvest valley which drop small titanite shards, I can't remember if it is the ogre's or the riders which shoot dark energy.

No, I know where she is, she's back in Majula, she just currently only sells a max of 10 shards, I must have to meet some other condition to unlock infinite shards.

Yeah, I got to Harvest Valley (currently in the middle of exploring it) and that vendor only sells 10 shards.  Didn't realize she was the Blacksmith's Daughter, but I noticed she charges more per shard than he did.  Good to know that eventually she will sell more.

I think one thing I need to do for sure is start increasing my endurance again. I'm getting tired out and staggered far too often. I did that a lot at the beginning but haven't recently.

Correct, it's the strong attack that does that and it's directional just like in the video.  You can change the trajectory by swinging your camera last second so it adds an element of twitch gameplay if you like that sort of thing (and I do ).

Endurance is a waste to gain more stagger resistance as it were.  Your best returns would come from strength and using a greatshield.  35 will gain you access to the black dragon greatshield I think it's called and 45 for havel's if you want to go beastmode like me.  With Havel's, you can literally block all day except on the most extreme of attacks and watch your stamina bar not even move.  You can even block strong attacks with a sliver of stamina and be fine in most cases, making it super appealing at upper levels.  Only thing it can't do is parry attacks but they do pretty damn good damage fully upgraded with the forward crushing attack.

As for those magic attacks on swords. Some swords are imbued with a strong attack projectile that drains durability. I find it funny that a lot of the people I see do nothing, but spam them to the point their weapon nearly breaks.   :dunce:

That's what the knuckle ring is for. ;)

People seem to make it seem like they make you use every aspect.

Things like infinite gems etc. I decided to not ever buy any. If I feel like really punishing myself I take off the 75% ring of binding and only use Eustus Flasks. I also I'm creeping slowly through this game as I am trying to make it hard without burning multiple aesthetics. Yeh I am no where near where everyone else is but its fun making the game that punishment that previous games were.

Basically they now allow you to play the game how you want instead of forcing you to grind/abuse yourself. I guess in the long run it lessens the bragging rights of beating a grueling game, but conversely I like that they made it more customizable.

Endurance is a waste to gain more stagger resistance as it were.

Just for that, yes.  But I like having more Endurance to allow more dodges and more weapon swings as well.  I just find having more Endurance in general very helpful - nothing kills you more quickly in Dark Souls than running out of endurance.

Speaking of, am I the only one that noticed the fact that the sprint sometimes doesn't kick in?

I dont know if my controller is messed up but I havent encountered any issues like that before and this was a fairly new one. I feel like when I hold B down my character still just walks sometimes. Is it my controller then somehow?

It sometimes does that to me if I sprint until my stamina is out, then I try to run again before my stamina is completely refilled, sometimes it doesn't start.

The other thing I'll get occasionally is a sound glitch, I'll chop the enemy and no sound for it will happen, after a couple of attacks, the sounds will happen late like it is trying to catch up, then it's fine after that. It's happened a little over a half dozen times in the 30 hours I've played.

Yeah, if you completely run out of stamina then you can't sprint until it fills back up.  So if you're sprinting a long distance, stop just before it runs out and then start again whenever it fills up however much you want.

Hm, somewhat sad I didn't come to that conclusion myself seeing as I have already beaten the game and have 40 hours logged  :dunce:

Thanks!

I think I just got a Mastadon Greatsword last night. And you can add an elemental attack to that, right? What would you suggest for that? Magic?

With your build, you have access to all the basic weapon enchants: magic/great magic weapon, flame enchant, and dark weapon. If you don't want to mess around with too much stuff in your inventory then magic weapon or dark weapon buffs are good since they just need a staff.  The higher tier buffs: Crystal magic weapon, Resonant weapon, and Sunlight blade require a little more in your stats to use.

Petrified dragon bones are just another way to upgrade certain weapons.

As for what is out there in the lava from what I went through: Human effigy, chaos storm, fire seed, bonfire ascetic, and phoenix parma shield.

That's what the knuckle ring is for. ;)

Such a waste of a ring slot for spam.  :-|

I learned that against the Chariot boss in the beta. At the time, sprint just wouldn't work for some reason after a run. Then the stamina bar would go down, but no sprinting. It was just weird then.
