From eurogamer.net:
Microsoft will switch off Halo 2 PC multiplayer next month.

15th February will mark the service end date for Halo 2 PC multiplayer. There are multiplayer Achievements for the game. After Halo 2 goes offline, they will be unobtainable.

"We've been monitoring the population for months, and it's been peaking consistently at approximately 20 players or less," explained Halo Waypoint's Jessica Shea.

"Those that own this game can continue to enjoy Multiplayer over LAN after that date; however our network services will be turned off at that time.

"We love you, Halo 2 PC, and you will live forever in our hearts.

"#singletear."

Halo 2 launched on PC in May 2007, two-and-a-half years after it released on Xbox.

Meanwhile, Microsoft revealed more information on new Spartan Ops episodes (the second half of Season One premieres next Monday), the Majestic Map Pack (due out late February) and new specialisations.

Next week two new Specialisations will be released for all Halo 4 players. Pioneer introduces a Fast Track armour mod that allows players to rank up more quickly, and Pathfinder includes the Gunner armour mod, which decreases the time of weapon overheat when occupying a vehicle weapon position, and increases player speed while carrying a detached turret.
Anyone know where I could get a copy at a decent price?
Seriously?
Halo 2 has been in the STAPLES bin for a long time. In NYC there are two spots. On 86th near the 4 train and 230th near the 1 train.

I bought this when they shut down the live servers. I was never able to get it to run on my PC with Vista. I had to call tech support and they had to take over my PC and install new files because some how some older files were bad. Once all of that was done it still didn't run right and I had to make a new account and could not use my live account.

Windows Vista sure was a mess.. on the proportion of Windows ME.

Huh, never got around to doing the multi in this but I have a copy, may get it installed and try to get those achievements before it shuts down, thanks for the heads up.
Well Microsoft abandoned old Live when 360 was released. thats the reason the xbox server was shutdown.
Halo 2 didn't get shutdown until 2010, 5 years after the launch of the 360. And I'd bet that more than 20 people were playing that online, compared to this version.

Shit - DooM II still has thousands of ppl online every time I get on it. Shit Daiktiana servers are still up and I never seen more than 5 ppl on there.

I just happen to be completing the final levels of Halo 2 legendary levels, man they're tough at parts. Sad its getting shut down, wish more halo games were on PC.

But this closure begs the question, how long before 343 creates Halo 2 Anniversary?

I had this installed on my 7 64 bit rig last year, so it shouldn't be a problem. Now for the fun, if it installs on 8.

Luckily, the multiplayer achievements are supposedly really quick to earn.

They really should patch this so that owners of the game can just host for themselves.

fuck you and your dedicated servers. fuck match making. Give me the ability to host, browser servers and get the fuck outta my way.

Wish I had known as I've been looking to get it and Gears of War for a decent double dip price forever. I'm not in NYC though, I'm in the ATL. Neither the one by work or the one by my house has a .99 bin of games. In fact, they now have very few games with a small rack of $10 games and a small rack of clearance games in jewel cases.

I attempted awhile back to start a NYC thread going on deals but I never buy games at all so I posted that little that I knew by happenstance but NYC has a lot of stores with junk bins full of random stuff and PC games be in there.
Wish it was like that here, but no such luck. Guess I'll be paying 20 or so instead... Think I'll keep waiting.
I hear you. The family and I have been considering moving out of NYC for the last 3 years and unlike what too many believe it's actually cheaper to live in NYC....that plus everywhere else seems to close early for everything.

Funny this comes up. I was in a local Fred Meyers the other day and saw in the PC games section brand new copies of both Halo and Halo 2 PC. Also saw the original Diablo II and LOD expansion in separate boxes (original retail release, not the battle chest which was also on the shelf)

Was very surprised to see those old games in perfect condition on the shelf, I don't know the prices though.

With much jubilation (and TONS of rage!) I've finally completed Halo 2, and not a moment too soon, with the server shutdown looming.

I was thinking of taking a Halo break, but if I can pick up Halo 4 on the cheap this weekend, I'm in. If not, I'll keep thinking about starting up Halo Wars, but I'm definitely NOT a RTS player, and worried I won't be able to complete the game on legendary vs. the CPU. Anybody out there with opinions of Halo Wars?

I thought it was great. Obviously not the hardcore, in-depth RTS experience like SC2 or whatever but seeing's how it was designed for use with a console controller, the controls and gameplay were really done well and never felt clunky or awkward. The story was not the stuff of legend but certainly no weaker than any of the other Halo games. The production values on the CGI cutscenes were surprisingly good for a game that I bet had significantly lower budget than the other franchise titles. I played the whole campaign co-op through with my friend, and it was a lot of fun. The missions had pretty varied objectives, it was not just always "go kill this" or "build up and kill that". I think we played it on normal or heroic.

My only complaint was that there was no covenant campaign, in fact the only way to play as the covenant is to play it in a skirmish mode. I would really have liked to see a covenant storyline, since I enjoyed the human storyline and it also seemed like there were pretty meaningful differences in the different units the covenant could get, so you would definitely be using different strategies.

Never gonna give up the collector's edition copy I got using Goozex points :).

I bet the reason they want to keep it up is casue might be Halo coming to steam.. they may have denied it but halo was found in the steam registry.
