Slim vs. Super Slim

Hey all,

Unfortunately I think I'm going to have to look into getting a new PS3. I've had the OG 60GB model since around 2008, but it has since gotten the YLOD, been reballed, overheated, been repaired again, and now seems to be overheating once more.

I'm really tired of dealing with this fucking touchy beast, so I think it's finally time to give in and get one of the newer models. Unfortunately there don't seem to be any sales going on right now, and both the slim and super slim are available for around the same price. I've been reading on my own but haven't seemed to find much on the topic, outside of people feeling like the Super Slim is rather cheap (and there being that odd squeaking issue).

I personally think the Slim looks way better, but if there are some great benefits about the Super Slim I don't know about, I'd really appreciate the info. I know it uses slightly less power, but the fact that it is newer (and less tested) has me worried. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Super Slim is smaller, lighter, and it's a top loader so it's like the PS2 slim or PSone when it comes to opening and snapping your games into place. The White Super Slim is coming to NA with a 500GB HDD and a year of Playstation Plus for $299. That right there is a no brainer. I have the Slim and like its design better, but you're not trying to have a flashy PS3, it's for playing games, that's all that matters and the Super Slim is your best value, you're getting a huge HDD and a shit load of free games with Plus.

Thanks for the input. I know about how the Super Slim works, and top loading isn't really a benefit to me, unless it increases the longevity of the drive. That's the kind of stuff I'm interested in; failure rates of the slims, and issues with the super slims.

I did see the white console coming out, but it's not something that appeals to me, aesthetically or practically. I never really came close to filling up my 60GB HD so 500 is definitely not necessary, and Playstation Plus doesn't really appeal to me. Any pack in's would likely get sold off to help compensate for the cost.

I was hesitant of getting the super slim. I don't mind it much and think it's pretty well built. What is your purpose on this if you seem to be favoring the Slim? You already made your mind and just go with it.

The better point in waiting for the white super slim is that it's likely a new revision which irons out some of the issues people are having with the existing super slims.

edit: Oops, wasn't trying to imply that the super slims are bad or anything but rather just that newer revisions are generally better all things considered.

We aren't having any issues with our super slim. Some did, but I have absolutely no idea how widespread the problems are. Still, I didn't see a lot of people saying they were having that noise issue, and if lots of people were, we'd hear about. I presume the problems are isolated. In any case if you end up with a bad one, you can return it for another.

I hadn't, to be honest. I was worried about the Slim having motor issues as I remembered hearing something like that for the OG model. The only problem I had with Super Slim was the looks, and the fact that it was newer, and therefore less tested.

I did get really lucky though and found a Super Slim Infamous/Uncharted BF bundle at Target; thank you bjstucker for suggesting Target as where to look for that.

If anyone has a recommendation on the best way to transfer my data from the 60GB to the Slim, I'd really appreciate it. I remember there being a thread about it but I couldn't seem to find it.

My 60gb ps3 got the YLOD so I bought the super slim. I don't like it. (Especially in comparison to the 60gb). The only benefit I see thus far is that he unit shouldn't suffer from over heating.

Unfortunately I've already bought the Super Slim, haha. What in particular don't you like about it?

Sorry for reviving this buried thread. I am nearly in the same situation as the OP, I'm just looking to retire my OG Phat PS3 Metal Gear 80B bundle. Right now the Slim PS3 is on sale at Best Buy for $230. I have $60 in gift cards and reward certs. Should I wait for a price drop on the Super Slim or get the dwindling Slim (which I'm more particular towards)? I'm not all too interested in PS Plus and all the dling (I have DSL so they would take a while). Are there any other advantages the Super Slim has over the Slim other than the memory factory? I.e. much significant lower chances of YLOD or noisiness, overheating (fan being really audible)?

tl;dr Slim or Super Slim? Reasons.

Thanks for your input lokizz.

Here's a follow up to my options now as well as this BS situation I just went through.
Impulse got to me and I ordered a little after my post. I placed the order at BB for the 160GB Slim and it turned out the store didn't have it, so I called 1888BESTBUY and the rep, though helpful, was unable to do anything i.e. change stores or ship to home. Then I placed an order at another store for pick up, just to double check. I received an email that it was ready for pickup. I wasn't expecting it. So I then went about trying to add certs and gift cards to the payment (b/c they had to be reinstated since they were implemented in the first order). Then in the middle of the call, while I had my order status open and it saying the it was ready for pick up the rep said it was cancelled, I opened the order status in another window and low and behold it was. So I wasted the last hour or two for absolutely nothing. I'm not angry, just slightly ticked. And I will free of conscience screw over BB at the given opportunity (i.e. take advantage of some unintentional loophole of theirs, like the $50 off $100 purchase coupon incident).

Only thing is the Super Slim to me is butt ugly and the whole color thing doesn't really appeal to me. But if there is a deal on the Super Slim bundle at about $200 then I guess I'll be fine with it. On another note is the whole noise issue resolved or was that just a exaggerated issue? Anyone have an idea when we might start seeing price drops (mid-March, late-March, April)?

You're in pretty much the same situation I was earlier this month. My PS3 died and was torn between getting an older slim model or the butt-ugly super slim. After reading a number of reviews on the super slim that stated how cheap it looked and felt, I decided to go with the slim and really haven't been disappointed at all with it. I'm glad you mentioned that BB has it on sale for $230, I'm going to go there tonight and get my $20 back.

Yea. But now I can't find a Slim anywhere in the NYC area, let alone the local are around, so I might have to settle.

I have a Slim and Super Slim. I do not like the Super Slim, but I have 1 positive thing to say about it. You can clean the bluray lens w/o opening up the system (it's annoying and breaks warranty). And it probably already comes with a 500gb drive, so no need to replace that like you would want to on a normal Slim. 120-160?gb is small. I replaced my 120gb Slim drive almost right away when I got it years ago.

I have no problems with my 120GB slim that I got in '09, and just recently I upgraded the HDD to 500GB (465GB actually). I am not amused by the super slim; unless my slim breaks down, I would not consider a super slim.

My slim laser went out and I was thinking of getting a new one. I ended up fixing it which wasn't hard At all IMO, but I have PC building experience so I'm used to this stuff. But the laser itself was $20 and the toolkit to open the PS3 is $10 on amazon. For all of you with overheating, get a couple dollar can of compressed air and the $10 toolkit and $5 thermal paste before you throw it out, might just fix your issue. I plan on New paste before too much longer just as a prevantative. Then once the SS is down to its closeout $100 in a few.years I'll buy one as a backup for my PS3 games

I have a super slim (black one from Black Friday $199 special) and the thing is distractingly loud while playing quiet games like Uncharted. Not noticeable while playing RPGs or other games with constant OSTs. My friend has the regular slim and it looks a lot better aesthetically, kinda wish I went with that one instead despite fear of YLOD.

Amazon has some slim bundles available. I'm interested in the Uncharted one w the 320 GB Hd. It's $299.99. Thing is I have (but have not played) Uncharted 3. Think its worth it? It is the same price as some super slim bundles. Or chance it and wait for a price drop (is it even likely for the older slim model)?

I managed to acquire one of the last slim models on the Canadian Boxing Day. I preferred my old 60 GB model and miss it to this day but the Slim is fine. Honestly, I don't like the look of the Super Slim. It looks very cheap.

I wonder what iterations of the PS4's later models will look like. Then again, we still don't know what the PS4's first model will look like.
