Dragon Quest IX: Sentinel of the Starry Skies (NDS) $12.88 at Big Lots

I just got a 3ds a few weeks ago, and while waiting for some games in the mail, I realized I had a new unopened dq9 game that I had forgotten to get rid of when I sold my ds. So, I popped it in to see how the 3ds handled ds games....

Long story, short.... I racked up about 60 hours while finishing the main story quest, and absolutely loved it. It sort of renewed my love of jrpg's like the old school ff7-9. The graphics really don't seem that dated, and while multiplayer aspect doesn't really work anymore, you can still access the daily DLC for different outfits and weapons, which is cool.

Also, while I've finished the main story line, there is still tons and tons of stuff to do post-game, so its well worth the $12 or so.
Oh wow, I might have to pick this up. Is it any fun if you are playing solo though?
It's a single player game. It's also a good game.

Yup--the co-op was intended as local only.

The hook was the ability to trade special location maps with unique treasures. Nintendo held meet-ups at GameStops, BestBuys, and shopping malls around the country. The challenge for the players is that you have to beat the new maps in order to share them.

This was inline with Nintendo's "up until then" belief that all co-op should be face-to-face--driven by Japan's love of face-to-face portable gaming (hey' its a small island). This drove Pokemon play for a long time, and its the main reason they never embraced Pokemon on the Wii. The upcoming/current Dragon Quest for WiiU (and Wii in JP) is a big step in a different direction, likely driven by Square-Enix and the lessons they have learned bringing Final Fantasy online.

Is sort of a shame DQ 9's co-op didn't embrace the West's online preferrence, because I think the game would have sold even better.

Wish I held onto my copy of Chapters of the Chosen I got a couple years ago for $9 on black friday at amazon. The resale price on that has really gone up.

Might as well hold onto my Dragon Quest VI and IX for the DS which I finished, looks like a good long term investment.
