Hey fellow CAGs, the open beta for Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst is starting on May 10th. http://www.psobb.com/index.php is the link to the official site where you can read up on more info and download the client once it is May 10th. I still play the original PSO, and I can't want until this one is open to the public. The game has new levels and a new interface judging by the screens I have seen. If anyone from CAG plans to play, let me know so we can play together sometime .

EDIT: The beta is now open, read below for more info.

Interesting... PSO was really fun to play back in the day.

However, if there's any sort of monthly fee, they can forget about it. There's numerous other MMORPG's I'd rather give my 14.99 too (World of Warcraft comes to mind) and hell, Guild Wars is free.

I'd love for this game to have no monthly charges, but I seriously doubt it, so i'll have to pass.

I'll probably try it on the 10th, but with all the cheating I hear about linked with these PSO games, and the monthly fee, I doubt I'll actually buy the game. What distinguishes this game from the other fee-based online RPG's? Especially since WoW is supposed to be the best (I haven't played it, or any fee-based online RPGs so I dunno)...

I wonder what Sega would do/think if they thought some potential customers were wary of playing their games just from hearing about the rampant cheating going on in them? Does Sega really charge you and not fix the problems in a noticeable way? (I don't mean to bash games I have never played, I'm just curious cause I used to really want to play these PSO games, but I never had/have a DC or GC, or want to pay for the Xbox game).

Because the character data on the console versions are saved client-side, preventing cheating is pretty difficult. With Blue Burst, character data is saved server-side, so cheating is much harder. Kids can't use their Action Replay codes on their computer.

As for the game itself, it looks awesome on a PC. They've also created a new Episode (4); this expansion will be included in the US release of Blue Burst, I believe. Japanese players can already buy Episode 4.

This is just the beta. The website says the game is coming out Spring 2005.

Episode 4 takes place in the Crater after a meteor (or something) hits Ragol. New boss (there's even a rare form), new enemies, new quests, new items (remember God/Battle? There's a new Heavenly/Battle that is supposed to boost your speed 50%), new enemies, and other stuff.

This sounds great. I never got into PSO, surprisingly. I bought the Xbox version and never got around to playing it online, and now it's probably far too late. But this sounds like a good enough place to start. Plus, it's free! Can't beat that.

If you look through the forums on the site you can download the client now. I have it downloaded but haven't tried it out. Still won't be able to play till 10th but you wont have to worry about downloading it.

Monthly fees? Eeek. I like PSO on the GC, but for online RPG's Guild Wars is #1 in my book. Plus, action RPG's always feel so shallow when compare to tactics based games. Oh well, at least the beta is free. Maybe some enjoyment is to be had there :)

The beta is open as of now, I just played and got to lvl 2. I am under the name "mcdoodle" and am a FOnewearl in a green costume, just in case you see me around. The game is incredible, it is like the original PSO, but the interface and just everything is so much more smoother and better-looking, and higher resolution doesn't hurt. I may actually end up paying for this when it comes out.

Downloading now... character name will be Roufuss.

I really wish Sega would do the right thing and make this have no monthly payments like Guild Wars... you'd get a TON of new blood into this game.

But with monthly payments... like I said earlier, I don't really think it can compete against WoW or EQ 2, and having monthly payments will only cripple the fanbase.
To register you go to the board and then you register by clicking the [Register] button in navy blue?
is that for the actual game also?

I dunno if you guys know it, but theres a torrent out there with eps 1 & 2 but with no fee. All u gotta do is email the guy and he'll give u a pass and stuff. As nice as this sounds i dunno about playin this only for a month then payin specially when i can play 1&2 for free.

I've got the client but can't patch it... apparently alot of people are having the same problem.

I guess Sega disabled the patching server until the 10th? Since people who patched it earlier can get in and play.

I've been playing for a little bit earlier today. I'm using the username zewone so look for me if you want to party up.
They took the servers down and haven't put them back up on this side of the pond. :x
Same with over here.

Been waiting all day to get on, too.

Just got on. Got to level 3.

I created a Team (Clan). There wasn't enough character space for CheapAssGamer so I called it CAG. If anyone wants an invite to it, let me know.

I'd like to be invited, but the server is not working for me. What information of mine do you need to know to invite me? My Sega username is dd_mcdoodle and my character name is mcdoodle (darn Sega and their character limit), but is there any other stuff you need to know to invite me? Thanks.

I'd like to be in too but I've tried since this afternoon, around 1 pm, and still haven't gotten in. I've gotten the game patched at least, but I still get error 903 when connecting to the game.
Bah, I can't even download it. The download rate nosedives and doesn't stop until it hits about 6 KB/sec.
Have you tried the torrent? I averaged about 200 kb/s when I was downloading it.

The torrent is averaging about 2 kb/s for me...

Finally got on... and I'm a bit dissapointed.

Maybe it's all the MMORPG's I've played since my PSO days, but this game feels really... dated. I mean, it feels like the character models haven't been improved since the DC days.

And, imo, its got that whole "console release shoved onto the PC" feeling. While I know this WAS a console game, I felt Sega could have really cleaned up the interface a bit for the PC version... a little would have gone a long way.

I like it alot, but I just get a huge feeling of "been there, done that" that I can't seem to shake.

is anyone having a problem with typing in their gamer id and password after i download the update i can use my keyboad to type in my info any one please help

Go to control panel > regional and language options. Click on the Languages tab, uncheck "install file for East Asian languages." If that doesn't work, click on "Details" and add "United States-International."

I played the Beta for a few minutes. I like the new features. A lot little things have changed in the lobbies that make the game more fluid. I still need to get used to the keyboard controls (or buy a controller for my PC). The only thing that sucks is that the US servers are not linked with the Japanese/Chinese servers, IMO. If they change this for the final release, I'll get the game. Otherwise, I'll stick to the GameCube version and get Phantasy Star Universe instead.

wow yellow thx that worked but now im getting the 903 erorr connection could not be made maybe server is down for maintence it says but i try to go to the message boards on the website and its not working i get a error screen there too anyone can help i will be eternally grateful . p,s i was a dreamcast addict of this game

at least you get a screen, i'm trying to log in but alls i get is just the background screen. it's after you press the enter key. maybe i should just be patient.
