ok quick story, girlfriends birthday is this saturday and her phone is due for an upgrade. she can't decide between and iphone and a galaxy. she has an android tablet and is kind of use to the OS, and her thing about an iphone is having to relearn the OS (which she is not happy about).

sooooooo anybody have pros/cons to either phone they can share? any major problems with either? anything that makes one better than the other?... help?

iPhone Pros: Larger/fuller market place, typically more stable devices, pretty good support software/hardware wise through the product lifecycle.

iPhone Cons: Locked down interface, iTunes (not as necessary as before but still irritating), proprietary chargers that cost too much to replace, can't expand storage.

Galaxy S3 Pros: Samsung has good hardware overall, more open OS and able to take full control of the device, on most devices you can expand the storage with SDCards (of varying styles), generally use standard USB cables for charging/data connection.

Galaxy S3 Cons: The OS software support is pretty good compared to other android phones but in general Droid phones only get updates for about a year or so after launch without rooting, smaller market place, no guarantee that apps will work on your device as the market is a bit fractured.

I've had both iOS devices and Android. I'm on the Samsung Galaxy Note and I don't plan on going back to iOS ever.

very informative, good points I could not think to mention to her myself. Thanks a bunch!

Samsung is in full swing to try to take down the Iphone. Unless the Iphone 6 plans to be 5 inches with a quad core CPU...

I tried to convince my wife to stay android but she didn't want to listen Her side of the family is all Iphone. She went from the droid charge to the iphone 5. It's a nice screen but it's too small and too fragile. She wanted the commuter otterbox case as the defender was too bulky.

I am looking at the S4 or the S4 mini for the next phone. Too bad your GF's bday isn't in late april/may as the S3 should go cheap when the s4 arrives.

btw-I would not buy a phone for a gf unless you know it's serious between you two.

I was wanting an iPhone for the longest time, but since they arent on tmobile yet (tmobile, I know, ick) I got the galaxy s3 instead. Even though I wanted the iPhone for the longest time, I am glad that I chose the Galaxy. It has amazing speed, downloads and internet flies. The screen resolution is very nice, brite and vibrant. It is sleek and smooth, so buy a case because it is easy to slip out of your hands and onto the floor. Yes, an iPhone will have more apps but Android is also growing every day and personally I am perfectly happy with the app choices. The camera quality is pretty nice, Ive seen nicer but for a phone it is great, hd videos. I am a big music/gaming fan (obviously) and the galaxy is expandable up to 64gb and that is a nice chunk for a phone and one of the reasons why I chose it. Infact I just upgraded my sd card today and it read it perfectly fine without having to be formatted. So far this phone has taken all of what Ive thrown at it, and is working flawlessly. It had a lot of updates from my apps when I first got it, and I figured it would take forever like my ios devices, nope, updated all in just a few minutes. I dont know if what I said helps, but, it is a very nice phone and I am glad I chose it over the iPhone. Hope she likes whichever she gets!

Very well done... but, I would ask her which one she wants. I bet that she would be into the iphone (most gals are).

The next iPhone is supposed to have a quad core, but can someone explain to me why I would want a 5 inch screen and a phone so fucking huge it won't fir in my pocket?

I have Note 2 and it fits fine in my front and back pocket. At first the size was overwhelming but when I got use to it, there's not going back to something smaller.(that's what she said) All jokes aside the Note 2 is the best phone I've ever owned. The S4 will be like a Note 2 but a little smaller and with better specs. Also everyone that I know that has a S3 says, "this is the best phone I've ever had." Most my friends with iPhones are also looking to switch to Android after their disappointment with the I5. I'm not a Fandroid either. I actually have still and used previously an Iphone 3g, 4s, 5, and iPad 3. Unless you're trapped(invested too much) in the iTunes ecosystem, I don't see why anyone wouldn't switch to android. Best thing to do is go to your cell phone retailer and play with the phones. Whatever is easier to use and learn, will be the best for you. My Note 2 has so many features, I just stopped trying to learn all the things you can do with it.

The Note fits perfectly fine in my pockets. I will admit I had the same thoughts when looking at it but it's perfectly fine.

Id probably lean toward getting her the iphone. Easy to use, great for smaller hands , and the one thing I can say about apple is there customer service is amazing.

lol believe me its pretty serious. only reason we aren't engaged is because I am waiting till grad school acceptance/graduation so we can afford a wedding.

thanks for all the great advice everyone! good stuff!:applause:

I love the open nature of Android (able to install apps from places like the Humble store is great), but it's still missing so many major games and apps, and can be rather overly complicated. It also tends to crash a lot more than even my accient iPod Touch. Personally I'd choose the iPhone simply because of it's larger selection of quality apps, and the ease of use and stability of IOS;)

Unless you're a woman wearing skinny jeans, I don't understand the "phone won't fit in my pocket" comment. I have a note 2 with an otterbox case on it, and it fits in my pocket with room to spare.

I'm pretty deep in the iOS ecosystem. Household has 2 iPhone 5's, 2 iPad 3's, 1st gen iPod touch and an iPhone 3G. I like knowing all my phone apps will run on the iPad which isn't a guarantee on android. The build quality is also important to me. I upgrade my phone every year and the resell ability of an iPhone is unmatched. I sold my 4S's for $350 each after the iPhone 5 came out. Since she already has an android tablet and has said she doesn't want to deal with a different OS it doesn't make much sense to get her an iPhone.

I was checking on this samething for myself months ago. I now own a galaxy s3 and my next phone will more than likely be an iphone. I do like the phone and it does have some power behind it, but the battery life sucks. Don't forget that the s4 is coming out in the near future. I was worried that I wouldn't receive any updates, which I did from ICS to Jelly bean. Personally I would get an iphone that has better battery life and gets guaranteed updates for the normal contract life.
Do you need to get her a phone now, or could you get her something else and wait a few months to get a "brand new" phone. Apple and Samsung will be selling their newest phones within the next few months.
Oh and I have noticed that if you plan on viewing digital content and movies that may have came with dvd/blu rays you have. Check to see if they are compatible with your device. The ones that work with android might only have a streaming option instead of downloading.

Not to hyjack this thread or anything, but I'm due for an upgrade and I really want a Note 2. Problem is, we're on AT&T (no, we wont switch carriers) and the Note 2 is still like $200 even for a refurb. Thats like waaaay out of our price range. Now my wife saw Galaxy S3 refurbs for like $30, which sounds good but I still kinda want a Note 2. I know that the Note 2s were on sale at AT&T for $0.99 one day last month, which would be awesome, and I also know the Note 3 is supposed to come out sometime this year.

Is it likely they will have another big sale, or that the Note 3 will come out and drive the price down any time soon? Or should I just get the S3? Right now I have an Inspire, and it's really starting to show it's age. I can use it for awhile, but it's starting to irritate me sometimes.

Got a S3 myself just a month ago, love it. I was worried about battery life myself, so instead of an otterbox I got a Mophie external battery. The phone runs from the external battery first then off the phone battery. With normal use the external battery is down to about 25% at the end of the day.

If she plans to keep the phone for multiple years, 1/2 year old iphone is good. Andriod market is very fractured and most devices don't get updates past a year, too many drivers to update every year for every device with andriod.

I kepted my original iphone for 4 years until it was dead in the water and apps were no longer supported by iOS.

Just a personal experience that I can put. My wife was looking for a new phone in December. She could have chosen anything that she wanted. She was using a Samsung Evo 3G (Android Device). She immediately checked out the Galaxy S3 and the Iphone 5. She choose the Iphone 5 because she felt that it seemed nicer in her hand. Felt like it was more quality made according to her.

She said the S3 seemed cheap by comparison. What was a disappointment to me is that the S3 was on sale at Best Buy that day for $49.99 so she was correct, it was cheap. However, being a good husband I coughed up the $200 for her Iphone 5. She loves it and has pretty much abandoned using here computer for everything now.

Just trying to lend the perspective of a woman here.

I just upgraded phones two days ago. I went with the Droid DNA, which is better in nearly every way, but let me tell you why I decided to stick to Android. For one thing, I far prefer the customization. I am a person that likes my computers/phones to be just so; I have the power to make my phone that with Android, but I really don't with iOs. The biggest reason, though, is the lack of widgets on iPhones. Just for my weather/date/clock widget alone I will forever choose Android over iPhone. I don't know why Apple hasn't jumped on the widget train yet, but I think it severely hurts the usability and convenience of their phones.

My wife doesn't like most Android devices because they're too big for her hands.

my wife will be getting an iphone 5 and I'll be getting a galaxy s iv

Reason:
We both currently have iphone 4. IMO, upgrading from a 4 to 5 is not worth $200 and to be honest the ios has gotten a bit stale. My wife rather stay with the environment she already has, that is what she is comfortable with. Now I do have an iPad, so any changes to the iOS, i still get to see and that will help me decide 2 years down the road where to go.
