I honestly feel we don't need new consoles. Right now we're paying $60 for 6 hour games that have day one patches.. After playing tomb raider it proved to me that developers can still do a lot with the current systems.

Don't forget Season Passes. Even single player games are getting these...

Lazy development doesn't really mean that new hardware isn't needed in my opinion. The perfect example of this is the first Dead Island and Dead Island Riptide. The first Dead Island was a buggy mess, and Riptide is also a buggy mess. You would have thought they would have learned with the first game? Apparently not.

There are games that are pushing the hardwares limits right now, and it's becoming a point where it will be an issue if we want improvements.

Dear MS: Layout the specs, if anti-used/always online is real or not. Don't BS us.
Also let us know if It's backwards or not.

I agree, but there are probably certain companies that feel like their games have reached the maximum potential. Creating a console works both ways, Microsoft isn't going to make a new console because it popped into their, they're creating it because there is a demand for more powerful hardware.

how refreshing would it be if they came straight out and said, online always necessary is "true/false", used games "will/will not" work on the system. First line out of whoever's mouth.

I would like to say if used games are not going to work I won't get the system but that is probably not true, when they show Halo 5 or something along those lines, resistance is futile

What games? I have seen none. Again I'll take a game like tomb raider, beautiful graphics, solid game play, no loading screens except for the first time you boot up. The only thing new hardware is going to do is drive prices even higher. I would agree with your point except I don't see any developer using half the resources the current systems have.

Dead Rising was the game that made me finally upgrade to a 360. I'll be curious to see what next gen game entices me this time around.

Bioshock infinite to name one off the top of my head. I've read several interviews with the developers and reviews that the game pushed the 360 to it's limits.

Count me in on the "I'd be fine with what we have for years to come" crowd but I know I'm in a growing minority. I guess I should be glad this generation was as long as it was.

I reallllly want to stick with Microsoft again since I'm already in their ecosystem pretty deep, but they haven't been doing much to win me over in the past 2 or 3 years. Ever since the simultaneous Live price increase and dumping of 1 vs 100 left me with a horrible taste in my mouth, I can't honestly remember one thing they've done to better their console or service that I've gotten anything worthwhile out of. Want to stick with XBox, but will not do so out of blind loyalty. They will have to win me over again.
Looking forward to it. I'm guessing first look at the next CoD as well.
You mean the one that was leaked early by Target. Wonder how much trouble Target is in...

Infinite pushed the limits and was massively downgraded graphics wise (just look at the PC version).

Also Skyrim pushed the limits. The xpacs made better utilization, but its apparent that there is frame rate drops throughout. Granted coding may help in this.

The biggest thing in other games is RAM. Games like CoD and BF3 have to limit load outs due to it. Also the above games have a pretty low limit on players compared to the PC counterparts.

Yup...that'd be the one.

You and I are of a like mind, sir. Right down to being bitterly disappointed that 1 vs. 100 went away. Still miss that.

I was just thinking about how each of the past several generations, my primary gaming console has come from a different company: Sega Genesis to Nintendo 64 to Playstation 2 to Xbox 360. (Maybe I should buy a Ouya  ) I'd love it if MS does all the right things to keep me in the fold for this next gen, but brand loyalty doesn't go very far for me when it comes to gaming.

I'm pretty deep into the new ecosystem MS has created (360+WP7+WP8+W8n desktop+W8 laptop) but if the "always online, Kinect always watching you, no used games" rumors are true then I'm out. I don't know why, but the persistent Kinect presence is what turns me off the most. I'll probably end up buying whatever Wii U blockbusters Nintendo will put out instead.

Yeah at least this gen I could purchase a console without Kinect. Next I'll be paying for some shit I don't want.

One of the things I'm the most interested in is the maximum number of players they will allow in a game online, specifically Battlefield 4.

BF3 on 360 was fun and everything, but some of those huge 64 player maps could get pretty dull with only 24 players.
Didn't help that "Alpha" & "Bravo" squads camped aircraft or sniped, leaving you and the enemy "Charlie" squads to drive around in circles capping flags until the tickets ran out.

Paul Thurrott is claiming the console will launch at $500, with a $300 Live Gold subscription "subsidized" model. Did the $99 subsidized 360 really move enough units to make them think they should try it again?

Agreed. I've put a lot of time into BF3, and I love the game, but those large maps just become boring as sin with such a small player cap.

I think it did, I was EXTREMELY close to buying one for my cousin at that price because I thought "$100?!" That's a steal even with the monthy payment". But then as I started to calculate the total price at the end of everything it turned out to be something not so exciting. So there were probably some people that just looked at the price and bought it.

Oh man I don't want to think about next Gen right now. By the time I get through my backlog a couple Gens will have come and gone. :(

Well you are getting a "deal" up front. I think people will buy this for the same reason. The new pricing scheme is basically getting a new system day one at a cheaper price and paying $40 more in the long run. MS must think that $300 is indeed the sweet spot for system prices.

I've given up on backlog and just learned to buy less games. Only way I'll ever finish my backlog is to become disabled and/or totally retired from work at a early age rather then the old age of 65.

That's probably why so much that was promised for that game got cut from the final version. It is still good but doesn't live up to the hype.

It'll probably still be 24. I remember thinking the same thing for games last gen but they still never really increased the basic 16 player online matches. They'll probably throw some bullshit like "We used all the extra space to Max out the graphics" or their BF3 excuse of "Console gamers didn't show intrest in 64 players online".
Let's just hope this falls within the $200-$350 range. I'd say that's a reasonable price.
No way that's happening...and if it did it would have to include one of those "pay monthly" plans

I wonder if the subscriptions will still be the same price...
It's only a rumor, but:

“Microsoft will initially offer two pricing models for the console: a standalone version for $499 and a $299 version that requires a two-year Xbox LIVE Gold commitment at an expected price of $10 per month.”

But I'm referring to the separate pricings of the subscriptions, such as a 3 month sub or 1 year sub etc.

You are going to be using whatever rate they give you, which is likely 1 month.

If those are the pricing models, wouldn't 300 + 240 for 2 years of live at 540 be cheaper then a 500 console plus buying 2 years of live on their own (say you get a deal for like 40 a year, that would still be 580), I guess it depends on hard drive space and stuff for each model though.

I wonder what happens if you have existing XBL time left over from the original 360 and you want to go witht the subscription model?

I think a live gold subsidized 720 is almost a certainty. The 360 version of this must have been a test run. I think it will be a popular option, allowing people to afford a 720 at launch that might not otherwise be able to, and for people who would pay for Gold anyway. Of course you'll be paying more for Gold than you would if you could take advantage of deals on yearly cards, but if you think of the extra you'll pay as loan interest, it's not too outrageous.

Paul Thurrott had more to say:

- the rumored "entertainment-only" Xbox model will likely never be a reality
- the next Xbox WILL require a constant internet connection
- the next Xbox may have backwards compatibility, but there is also going to be a low-cost, third-generation 360 coming, so that could be a sign that the new Xbow will not be BC...
- the next Xbox will run off of the "Core" version of Windows 8, so its possible that Windows apps will work on it
- the complete non-shocker is that the machine will have a Blu-ray drive
I wonder what happens if you have existing XBL time left over from the original 360 and you want to go witht the subscription model?
I wonder this too, as it would be cheaper to buy the $299 version since I would buy XBOX LIVE anyways. I'm assuming you could link it together and just extend the subscription.

six days left i can't wait. I already took off work for that day just incase they open it up for preorder which i think is possible and can head to gamestop right away.

More info. I believe the new console will be called Xbox infinity and they according to an article from the verge.com they are eliminating point cards going forward and will go to a system like itunes cards.
