Special effects pioneer Ray Harryhausen dead at age 92

If you're a film buff at all, you'll know his work. His stop-motion stuff is legendary, and directors like George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and Peter Jackson all cite his films as crucial antecedents for their work. Modern day animators often slip homages to him into their films, like the Harryhausen piano in Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride and Harryhausen’s restaurant in Pixar's Monsters Inc.

This is a serious bummer. I studied the hell out of this guy in school and his movies had some insane impact on my desire to become an animator. We lost a big one here

Really sucks, I am a big fan of his films. Jason and the Argonauts and Mysterious Island are fantastic.

The man is a legend. Sad to hear this. RIP.

He may be gone, but his work will live on through the ages. It's just so amazing to watch his movies, from Clash of the Titans to Jason & the Argonauts to Sinbad. You have to wonder how much persistence he had in creating those magnificent scenes. It is a lost art, not only with creating movement, but creating such magnificent and beautiful creatures that spring to life at 24 frames a second.
