Sonic: Lost World, the next installment in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, will launch on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, Satoru Iwata announced today in a Nintendo Direct presentation.
Iwata announced that Nintendo has entered into a worldwide partnership with Sega regarding the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Sonic: Lost World will be a brand new action adventure platforming game, and will launch exclusively on Nintendo's consoles.
Iwata said more information on Sonic: Lost World will be shared closer to E3.
"The one time rivalry between Mario and Sonic has grown into a friendship that has never been closer," Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime, said in a prepared statement. "These announcements in conjunction with SEGA demonstrate the commitment we have to bringing great games to the Wii U platform, and set the stage for our upcoming announcements at E3."

-Granted it's been a LONG time since we've had a good Sonic title, but I'm hopeful that since this seems like a collaboration that it may be the first worthwhile Sonic game in what seems like forever.

I might get this on 3DS. I still have Sonic Generations, Sonic 4: Episode 2, and Sonic Colors in my backlog. Did it say a release date?

Generations and Colors were great... How is Sonic 4? It seemed overpriced for just a few downloadable levels. I will buy this console title for sure, though.

I'm kind of excited about this, Sonic definitely had a rough patch of games but his last few have been pretty fun, plus it means another game for me to add to the Wii U collection :p

That trailer was pretty neat, had a good amount of throwback to classic Sonic as well which is nice, kinda reminds me of Mario Galaxy in the world design, I see what your saying about how there could be some camera problems though.
Looks like it's got potential though if some of those angles are gameplay I foresee camera issues.
If Colors and Generations are any indication, camera issues in 3D Sonic games are pretty much a thing of the past.

Also, put me in the "Colors and Generations are great" camp. That said, I'm definitely optimistic about Lost Worlds.

They probably just made a replay of it and unlocked the camera to make it more cinematic. The game's got some Mario Galaxy, Sonic X-Treme and Sonic Spinball in there. They've seemingly gone for a more cartoon-y style this time around, which is a departure from every 3D Sonic game.

First Sonic Lost World details, screenshots

May 28th, 2013 Posted in Posted by Brian, Screenshots, Videos, Wii, Wii U | 2 Comments » IGN published a preview from Sonic Lost World, which reveals the first details about the Wii U and 3DS game. The information covers new and old returning elements, GamePad bits, and a confirmation that the 3DS version will also feature full 3D levels.
Details and screenshots rounded up from the preview can be found below.

- Mix of 3D and 2D mechanics
- Abstract levels
- SEGA has shown three levels thus far
- Twist, turn, and jump along floating constructs suspended in mid-air
- Levels are now informed by gameplay needs, with some stages focusing on slower speeds with more platforming, and others pushing players to run as fast as possible
- Areas include Wind Hill, Desert Ruins 1, Desert Ruins 2
- Desert Ruins 1 consists of cakes, cookies, donuts and all manners of candy
- Desert Ruins 2 features an entirely different gameplay style
- Desert Area 2 offers the “tunnel racing” concept from previous games
- Controlling Sonic’s speed and a “Parkour system” were two key elements that were thought of during development
- Parkour system: allows players to automatically accommodate basic obstacles when he’s running
- Team’s greatest challenge was maintaining a sense of speed for the series while finding controls that made sense
- By default, Sonic doesn’t burst off with a tilt of the analog stick
- Sonic walks until you use one of the GamePad’s triggers to engage his running speed
- Need to hold down the second trigger to pull Sonic into a ball, giving him access to his full momentum
- Iizuka compares this to the ‘Boost speed’ from previous titles
- By creating a tiered structure to movement, Sonic Team is hoping players will be able to navigate the wide range of level designs, exploring and running as necessary
- GamePad is used to activate various Whisp-based “Color Powers”
- These feature touch-based controls and are mostly used to gain access to side paths and areas
- Support Mode: one player uses the Wii U’s tablet to assist a second player who is controlling Sonic with a Wii remote and nunchuck
- Only control Sonic
- Friends such as Tails, Knuckles and Amy will make appearances in the story
- Story: Sonic chasing after Eggman and finds a mysterious floating island known as “Lost Hex”
- Sonic will run across the “Deadly Six”
- These foes will bring a “sense of danger and humor” to the story
- Sonic will save animals throughout levels
- Rescuing animals are tracked level by level as well as cumulatively
- This aspect will factor into unlockable content
- Red Star Rings can be collected for unlockable content
- Gold cannons help you access hidden paths
- 3DS version will also have full 3D levels

I hope this game pulls together. I got word of this game earlier this year, but I heard the controls were a bit loose then, and that the game might be too hard for kids.

All previews point to it basically being a Mario Galaxy clone. Which I have no problem with whatsoever.

If they made it a long game with Mario like stars to collect, I would be ok with that. Hell, I would preorder it first chance I could get

Watching that trailer video, kind of wish there was a Wii version. I know the 3DS version won't be that nice.

Guess I have to eventually save up/buy a Wii U.

I haven't played a Sonic game since the Sega Genesis days. I never could really get into the 3D versions, but I may have to pick this up!

Another round of Sonic Lost World details

June 7th, 2013 Posted in 3DS, News, Posted by Brian, Wii U

More details on Sonic Lost World have emerged. The latest information batch covers both versions of the game – Wii U and 3DS.

You can find the latest below, and commentary from Takashi Iizuka after the break.

- Levels have diversity
- Can use the Pro Controller, but only in modes that involve two players
- Co-op and competitive options
- Support Mode: player with the Wiimote controls a “Radio Control Gadget” created by Tails
- This lets players destroy enemies and obstacles, helping less experienced players
- Local competitive mode split between the TV and GamePad
- Will have some sort of “fun feature that will allow players to enjoy the game longer”
- Was in development before Sonic Team knew about the Wii U
- Reconfirmed: share items through Miiverse
- Dimps developing the 3DS version
- “not a port from the Wii U version”
- Offers “totally new level design to match the screen size and hardware so players can enjoy both versions with a fresh feeling.”
- 4 players locally or online for a Versus Mode
- Once again, share items between both versions

“Yes, we are aiming to get the players more excited and happy as they advance to each level – once clearing the previous level – by adding more variation to all the levels. This is not just about the variety and fun regarding the theme of a level, but also the shape and play style, which are unique in each.”

“We have many features that are Wii U-specific. Normal control of Sonic remains the same using the analog stick and buttons, but the new color powers that appear in this title will use the GamePad. In the ‘Cyan Laser’ color power, which is in the E3 Demo, you control direction and launch timing with the GamePad. We are also implementing various color powers which will use the GamePad as well.”

I think Sonic may top Mario this this year. I mean I'm sure it won't in sales but MAN IT LOOKS GOOD

Not a big fan of being forced to use gyro controls. I usually play my 3DS at an angle, which is not good for gyro.

Sonic Lost World due out on October 13

June 13th, 2013 Posted in 3DS, News, Posted by Brian, Wii U | No Comments »

Sonic Lost World has a release date. SEGA confirmed to Game Informer that it will be launching on October 12. That applies to both versions of Sonic Lost World – Wii U and 3DS.

Sweet. I'll probably pre-order next time I am in gamestop.
While I love Sega for making this, this is coming out the same day as Pokemon X/Y. Why..... Why must you mess with me Sega, lol.

Yeah, that actually seems like a somewhat bad choice. Hopefully it won't too negatively impact the Wii U sales. 3DS sales might be DOA.

I think anything for the month after Pokemon X/Y would be dead for WiiU/3DS. They would of been better delaying it to the last week in Oct.

Surprised that there hasn't been much activity in this thread. The game's due out in about a month (Oct. 18th in Europe, Oct. 22nd in North America), and it's looking fantastic. A multitude of trailers have been released, including this one from today that shows off many of the game's features, straight from TGS:

Also, there's a Deadly Six Bonus Edition, which includes a brand new level based off NiGHTS into Dreams!:

I was really eager to play the demo for this at TGS.  Afterwards, my impressions could be summed up as one big "Meh."  It's certainly a very pretty game, but it wasn't particularly fun.  Granted, I'm basing this opinion off the single stage that was available to play, but I still came away disappointed.

I played it at PAX (the 3DS version, specifically) and wasn't impressed either, mainly because Sonic doesn't quite move like Sonic; wall-jumping in particular wasn't as "sticky" as it had been in the past, and overall, it was more frustrating than fun. This was a disappointment considering how great Colors and Generations were.

Wow, surprising. Then again the more I see this, I see a blantant Mario Galaxy rip off. I am still keeping my preorder until I hear word otherwise that this game is bad as a whole.

Those reviews actually seem to be all over the place. It's hard to know which one to trust because those site/mag reviewers always have biases (for and against) going into the review, and don't usually play much beyond confirming those.

I'll be interested to hear what CAG's have to say, but I will still wait for the inevitable Sonic price drop (unless there's a great deal or combo).

It doesn't look that bad from what I saw, but I wont know until I get my hands on it. Has anyone here played it yet?

Got my copy yesterday and I love it so far.  It takes a little while to get used to but it's a ton of fun after that.  I'd recommend to people looking for a good Wii-U game that isn't a 1st party title.  It's got Time Attack, Achievements/Missions, and Leaderboards too!

Here are my initial thoughts a couple worlds into the game:

This game is great. Feels more like a Sonic Adventure sequel than any previous 3D Sonic games.  Some levels are very challenging and frustrating but overall level design is impressive.  Power ups are fun but the asteroid one uses tilt controls that make it difficult to maneuver.  Bonus stages use the Touchscreen for a "breakout" style game play.

It's nice to know people are enjoying the game. I may need to pick it up after all sometime soon. I was worried with the negative reviews and bad press it got.

I know it's a ripoff of Mario Galaxy but hell, I could care less. I been wanting a new Mario Galaxy for awhile anyway.

I think I may get it next month then unless it gets a BF deal.

I've been playing a lot of this game over the weekend, and it's really growing on me.  The overall presentation is aces, easily the best that Sonic has ever had.  The music is awesome and the levels are totally what I thought Sonic levels would look when I was a kid.  Once you learn all of the controls the levels are fun, with a few frustrating exceptions.  The only really shitty thing about the game is the terribly implemented motion controls for the Wisp powers, especially if it requires you to tilt the Game Pad.  I really wish there was a way to turn the gyro sensitivity up so I don't have to swing the pad around 270 degrees just to turn a tiny bit to the left.  I only got it because of TRU's B1G40% sale + Groupons, but if this ever hits $30 you should jump all over it.
