Future of the Used Game Market

With the upcoming Gen of consoles coming, and the future of used games still up in the air, it's very possible this could be the last generation of disc based games that will work used. Does anybody think the value of the games of this generation might become more valuable now the only way to buy used games will be for this generation and previous?

Let's say the market is split and one or the other company doesn't block used games. What do you think the retail space for that is gonna look like?

Since most places don't sell used games or have a huge focus on used games, I don't think most retailers will care.

I'm guessing GS will sell XO systems and games, but will probably allocate most of their shelf space to Wii U and PS4. eBay isn't going to like it since XO games won't sell for as much (and thus, less fees for them), assuming they're at all sellable. GS and eBay used game sales might not matter initially, but in time as people look to get rid of their old games, it'll become more of an issue.

Either way, I honestly think MS will re-think how they handle it. They'll either reduce the fee to a very low amount (may $5-10 or do away with it altogether). But if they stand firm, and Sony decides to do the same... then we could see a huge dent to the used game market.

I say Gamestop will just devote more shelf space to what they can make money on, not what they can sell. Kinda like it is now, notice their new game section is much smaller than the used section. They may have 50 new titles, but only the hottest and newest are turned facing you, otherwise they are spine out on the shelf. The used section is the opposite. That may not be every store, but the 7 near me are like that.

It's probably going to end up with the Jokebox being sold at Microsoft stores.

The next gen consoles not accepting used game's is irrelevant on the price of the current gen's used games. Your second question is a bit confusing, the prices on the current gen of game's are for the most part gonna become less valuable as more games come out.
People buy the games used because it's cheaper then new. I don't see any reason the current gen would increase in price just because the next gen doesn't accept used. They might have to lower the price on new games for the next gen because if there's no way to trade in or sell them, then less people will buy them at full price as they currently do. There will definitely be some implementation of used games on the next console. I mean otherwise rental companies would get killed, PLENTY of game stores would get killed.
Think about it, gamestop (While not the ONLY place to buy games) still sell's a MASSIVE amount of New Games/Consoles. so if the console were to not accept used games (which is downright ridiculous) than Gamestop probably would refuse to stock the console.
That is a MAJOR loss of sales from that standpoint. People seem to not think about that standpoint.

I'm going to guess there might be something along the lines of games forcing install's and then having the disc be able to authenticate and allow the game to play, at least for the X1. (Which makes the "Must connect to internet every 24 hours" make sense for the Xbox One) That way, you can't just duplicate a disc, or burn a copy, that disc is tied to your account, sorta like a cd key (That is the physical CD). But that disc is transferrable, as would the CD key, so when someone else has the disc, they can enter it, tie it to THEIR account instead, which would then cause the last person to lose THEIR access to the game.

It's probably gonna be more a DRM reason then anything else. It would pretty much stop pirating because the console would be able to check every 24 hours if the game being played was authentic or not. (Missing the unique on disc authentication) and if it was a pirated copy allow for action be taken. No longer can someone just play a burned game offline from a hard drive.

Other than that I don't see universal online passes happening, EA said they don't work, and I don't think Microsoft ITSELF would MANDATE them for every game.

This wil not benefit Gamestop in any way whatsoever. Consumers do not have brand loyalty when it comes to retail stores, particularly when shopping for Video Games. Gamestop not stocking Console X will have no impact on the sales of Console X, all it means is that a greater amount of inventory of Console X will be allocated to Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, and Amazon. If people want to buy Console X, they aren't going to buy Console Y just because it's all Gamestop has, they're just going to leave Gamestop and buy Console X at Wal-Mart.

Ok, from what I've gathered, my CD key analogy was actually very correct, each new game can be tied to an account, and if chosen to pass along to someone else, they can install, and for a fee, tie it to their account as well. I see this working out after people quit whining, because the person who bought it new, well, they bought it new no issues, and still can trade it in. The person who bought it used, ok they bought it used, they will require a extra little fee to tie it to THEIR account but after that they ALSO have the game.

extra little fee = full price

It most definitely WILL affect console sales. It is the same concept of how one game may be $15 at best buy but $30 at game stop, yet they don't bother to research prices and just go to game stop to buy it.

I'm sorry where are you getting the "Full price"? Point me to one place they say that. That has been SPECULATION.

"The bits that are on that disc, you can give it to your friend and they can install it on an Xbox One," he said. "They would then have to purchase the right to play that game through Xbox Live."

"They would be paying the same price we paid, or less?" we asked.

"Let’s assume it’s a new game, so the answer is yes, it will be the same price," Harrison said.

That's a terrible example. If someone wants to buy Super Mario Brothers, it doesn't matter if they buy it at Gamestop for $15 or Best Buy for $30, they still got the game. If someone wants to buy a X-Box and Gamestop doesn't carry it, they aren't just going to up and decide to buy a Playstation instead, they'll just go to Wal-Mart or Target or Best Buy and pick one up.

i don't get why people are accepting this "fee" that MS wants to charge us. The person who bought the game new in the first place already paid MS for the game. If that person now wants to give it a away/sell it/ or let someone borrow it, why does the new owner have to pay Microsoft?

Its like if i buy a car and i let my friend borrow my car.. is ford going to demand for my friend to pay them a fee to ride my car?

I love the Xbox & the 360, i prefer both over Playstation, But i will not put up wit this. I won't be buying the Xbox one, i buy most of my games used and i won't be paying extra money to a filthy rich company like microsoft after i already purchased the used game from someone.

No way!

PS4 will be my new gen system.

I guess I meant holding value a lot longer than previous generations. What I'm suggesting, since every generation of game consoles so far has allowed people to play a game no matter what, that the entire used game market may have some type of influx as a result of the next gen being more much more expensive to buy used if there are fees involved, going all the way back to 8-bit era games. Rare sealed games can get crazy amounts on eBay.

I really enjoyed what he said, now I have permission to play what I payed for. I'm relatively disgusted by MS for what they are doing. I don't know if I'll buy another MS game again, definitely pick it up on PS3 if I have a choice. I was looking forward to the NEXTgen of games but all the rumors that are now starting to surface might just be the breaking point to continue on.

Exactly this. I was planning on buying the new xbox, but hell no now.
I buy virtually all my games used, have around 45 and got about 5 new.
PS4 will get my business now. BTW, is there any news about it at all? General release date, etc?

Only way to stop this BS is hit Microsoft in their Wallets. If Xbox one goes the route they are talking buy a PS4. If Sony pulls that buy the Wii U.

Buy a 360/PS3/Wii U.

This rumored "next generation" is not worth the sacrifices Microsoft and potentially Sony are asking from the consumer.

My main beef is that under this rumored model, the games I would buy would essentially be worthless 10-15 years from now. MS/Sony come out with new consoles in 7 years, several years later drop the servers from the X1/PS4 and now you have a pile of useless disks.

If I buy a CD, I expect it to work in 20 years. Same thing with DVDs and Blu-rays. Video games should be no different.

I highly doubt any of this shit is going to fly though as most people aren't going to buy a console with such ludicrous restrictions.

I'm upset about what I've heard so far about the X1. I've been playing console games most my life and when I was a kid I loved buying used atari 2600 games from the flea market. It's fun to buy/sell/trade one's games and helps pay for more games especially if you don't like a game you bought brand new. I don't like that I'm basically just paying for the permission to play a game for as long as they keep their servers running. I got into console gaming to not have to deal with PC upgrades and game registration crap. I just want to stick a disc in a console and flipping play it regardless what happens to the company 20 years from now.

What about Gamefly and Redbox? We won't be able to rent games. It's just too much. I understand they want more money but they can't get it by forcing this system on people.

If PS4 does this as well it brings up a dilemma. While I am absolutely against this DRM bullshit, I don't want Wii U to succeed. Supporting the Wii U sends the message that outdated, under powered hardware is fine. I don't want to send that message either.

From the sounds of it PS4 will leave it up to individual publishers. Some PS4 games will have DRM, some won't. I will only buy the ones that don't.

Why do people assume that Sony won't do this either? I personally think that your killing your business by making consumer unfriendly practices like this.

I am gaming more on the PC lately myself but there are some games I will NEVER buy on a console unless it's much cheaper than retail. I guess PC gets more of my business and console less now if they go through with this.

I typed up two long explanations of my reasoning, then deleted them, now I'm just going to leave it short and sweet.

This means two things:

*More money for big publishers (EA, Activision, MICROSOFT, etc.)

*LESS money and possibly death to small games/devs/publishers.

Basically, we know why it will be more money to big publishers. But the smaller ones. Now there will be NO EXPOSURE to their games besides for buying the game new. Since people will not be buying these non-AAA games new in masses, no one will ever buy them used at a hiked up price.

There is no way that Sony doesn't do the same thing. No way EA gets rid of online passes just because of Microsoft. A cut of used game sales is something that EVERY publisher/developer wants. If Sony doesn't do this, publishers and development companies might be more apt to create only for Xbox because of the increased sales profits. No way Sony doesn't do this because what corporation doesn't like making more money. Microsoft just took the leap first.

I think there is a small chance Sony won't.

EA and Microsoft announced their little "partnership" the other day, so maybe it was based off of this.

EA has an excuse to now publish for the Wii U. Sorry, people can say whatever they want, but the console is not "next gen" compared to what MS/Sony are offering. But because of Sony's hardcore fanbase and current-level specs EA would be shooting themselves in the foot to only publish for MS because of the (obvious) agreement.

It's sad to say, but the X1 will still sell. We will have a new generation of uninformed gamers that won't know any better. People have short memory spans and will forget about the time when physical media was an option. Like when mp3 format took over the c.d market. Also the lure of a new IP will prove hard to resist for many. Everyone is counting on Sony to be the gamer's savior, but don't set yourself up for disappointment. At the end of the day they are both working for profits, not our best interests. The death of physical sales is their ultimate goal. Their playable disc is nothing more than an illusion of ownership. It's like when arcades were popular, you would pump quarters all day into a machine with nothing more than temporary enjoyment. No ownership, no trading, just entertainment services in exchange for your money. Same principle, just the cabinet/console would be in the ,"privacy" of your home. As for used game sales, the only one that would really suffer is GAMESTOP. Waiting on price drops and sales for CAGamers made games easily affordable as much as a used game. We the consumers were never reaping the benefits anyway. But for those of us who know better, screw Microsoft with a razor sharp dildo! Real gamers want to really own their games and consoles forever, not just for the current generation.

I also wonder if Microsoft isn't just dropping rumors to see how people react...

I'm sure they wanted an always on console with no used games, but they sort of "tested" the reaction and it isn't to hard to see people don't want that....now.

Ive always said that when used games are finally gone...Gamestop will be almost gone too. I honestly think this will be the last gen for used games; as for gamestop, when it happens, theyll close like ~50% of their stores, and then turn into a retro games store. (hopefully even bringing back snes, ps1, genesis, etc)

Hopefully if Playstation 4 leaves it up to publishers to decide whether to implement DRM in their games or not the small publishers are smart enough not to.

New game prices are competing with used game prices. If you take away the used market, the new games have less reason to drop in price.

I agree with this. It is very rare now that the difference in price between used games and new games is more than $5 - $7. I understand for some people that makes a big difference, and others don't care and would rather just save a couple bucks, but I'd rather just wait for the price drop and buy new, I haven't bought a used game in years, not counting old stuff I buy at Thrifts. I think the fact that you can't let friend borrow your games is absurd, but not being able to buy used doesn't matter to me.

i have a question.. On the PS4 can you play the games without having to be online at all?
because i expect to be able to play my games 30 years from now even if their servers no longer exist.

if im able to then great i'll go for a PS4, if not, if its the same crap as Xbox 1... Then sadly i'll have to go the computer route.

^^ Basically a new report saying no fee for used games.....

I really think Microsoft is throwing out these ideas and seeing how hard people bash on them.

Yes, long term we are heading towards an always connected digital world. But our infastructure is NOT THERE yet. Who knows if it will even be there by next generation....

I work at a vocational school where a lot of sub-30k income students attend (if any income at all). With what they do have, they spend a lot of money on games. HOWEVER, not a lot of them have internet. Requiring an always on console or digital oriented distrubtion at THIS TIME is going to throw out A LOT of mainstream (COD, Madden, NBA 2K) game sales.

So, nevermind the fact that people like us are sitting here saying we just don't want games to be this way, or we have itnternet but its slow. There are people out there who game and have NO INTERNET. (I know I'm getting a little off-topic from used games, but it all fits in).

EDIT: Also why that guy who got fired for his Twitter comments is SO IGNORANT.

I forget who it was, but someone at Sony said you don't need to go online with the PS4.

This is only going to affect gamestop's profits. Rather than them charging $55 for a $60 game you'll pay $50 to compensate for the Microsoft fee. Simple.

I meant in the sense of mp3's being the most convenient format for most. As for the used competing against new games, the incentive to drop in price for new games would be competition with newer releases. Almost every game depreciates in value, although some faster than others. Yet I see everyone's concerns, whatever the case...Screw the X1 as it stands to date.

Remember guys this is not a gaming system but a full blown multimedia center. It will definitely sell because the target group is not the hardcore gamer, but instead the casual gamer(the masses). Sad to say but gaming died with the current gen. Maybe there is some hope with nintendo. BTW Original XBOX was my all time favorite console......tear

well that link gives me a little bit of hope but i hope its true..

Microsoft pretty much royally pissed almost everyone in the community off. Sony is trying to recover from the PS3 and win everyone back. If Sony isn't stupid (and I don't believe they are, they just get really egotistical) they'll confirmed that the PS4 is used games friendly and that pretty much ends the next gen war right there.

Well until the Nintendo games come out and sell millions like they always do. Nintendo vs. Sony should be fun.

It's been a trend actually. Every console maker gets cocky with their third console and gets an uppercut for their trouble.

N64, Saturn, PS3. Now it's Xbox's turn.

Nintendo vs Sony won't be a competition any more than humans compete with ants. Nintendo has used up all their good will, they are already through this generation before the battle even begins.

I agree 100% with this. We are essentially renting the games at $60 each. Just look what is going to happen to all of our digitially purchased games/dlc/XBLA from the Xbox 360. With no BC on the XB1, you're going lose all of that the moment Microsoft decides to flip the switch and not continue to support the old platform.

Sad to say people who read gaming news and interviews, care about what these companies are trying to pull, and are careful with their purchases are the minority. Every person I work with who has ever touched a console is raving about the One, and they can't even give a valid reason why, they just want it because it's new and shiny. No matter what Microsoft does, for every person who is intelligent enough to refuse to accept it there will be five more ignorant bro-gamers/soccer moms/other stereotypical consumer types in their place.

^^ Like I said it will sell because it is geared toward the masses. Be awesome if some Independent developer comes out with a console geared toward the hardcore gamer.

What pisses me off is when they take eBay prices and add another 20% on top of that, regardless of the condition. If a retro game store put eBay prices on their games, I don't have a problem with that because at the very least, I can inspect the game and see what it looks like.

I found a new retro game store here that used that pricing method and I really like it there. Their games are in fantastic condition so I don't mind paying eBay prices since I know what I'm getting.
