Classic game you pick up again and again?

Clak

CAGiversary!
Recently I've been playing Chrono Trigger again for...I don't even know how many times this makes. It's one game that I see to come back to every now and again. There really isn't any other game that I do this with either. For some reason I just love this game. Do you all have a game that grabs your attention like this?

I suppose I have several (including CT), but the main one is Mega Man X. I probably do a playthrough of that once a year. It's quite short when you know where everything is, though.

I like to re-play a lot of my classic adventure games. I'll usually pull out The Secreft of Monkey Island or Kings Quest VI every other year or so.

Good Old Games is actually having a huge adventure game sale this weekend. I was thinking of picking up a few titles that I never got my hands on back in the day. I always meant to play Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers.

I recently bought :wii: Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings just so I could have a hard copy (sorta) of Fate of Atlantis, one of my favorite adventure games. The multiple paths make that one very re-playable too.

I'll also stick with the generic but relevant Super Metroid. I could probably play that game once a month and not get bored with it, especially since it can be beat rather quickly.

Not super retro, but I routinely replay Paper Mario TTYD on an annual basis together with my wife, though we missed out last year.

Also, I used to replay both Twisted Metal 2 and Black (the best from the series IMO) constantly when I had them. Mastering all the cars took some time, and it was even more re-playable when you had someone to do co-op with.

Namco Museum.

Bought Namco Museum 64 just to start.
Bought Namco Museum 50th Anniversary for Galaga '88
Bought Namco Museum PS2 for Galaga Arrangement
Bought Namco Museum DS for portability.
Bought Namco Museum Virtual Arcade 360 for a disc version of Pacman Championship and Galaga Dimensions.
Bought Namco Museum Megamix Wii for Gaplus.

I've got a bunch, but Super Mario RPG and Vagrant Story are my guaranteed annual playthroughs. Special mention to to Shining Force 2.

Loved Mario RPG as well. The only thing I hated about that game was the limited storage capacity. I was used to game likes CT where you could just carry as much crap as you wanted.

I replay all of my old games a lot, but the tradition is to bring out the N64 and play Mario Kart 64/Snowboard Kids the first week of winter snow.  We also play WCW/NWO Revenge and Goldeneye a lot.

Understandable. Super Metriod is a classic. I was so excited when they made it part of the Wii U's 30 cent Virtual Console promotion. The emulation for that game is fantastic, and it looks great on the big screen, as well as the gamepad.

It's always Super Mario World for me, though Yoshi's Island is getting very close.  I play those classic games for a little while, then I get frustrated due to my crappy skills and then go back to it once again.

Definitely the OG Ninja Gaiden series. The first and third are difficult and cheap at times, but somehow I still go back to them. Went back to Vagrant Story on the Vita, since I'm busy and game on the go. This is one that I had waaaay back in the day and never beat, then got a second copy and never beat. Now I can hopefully put in the time and finish it.

I guess mine would be Final Fantasy VII, which I've beaten four times over the past 13 years.

Lately, I sometimes find myself messing around with Super Mario World every so often as well.

Going to go a little further back and give some props to some Commodore 64 games...

  • Questron (One of the best endings to a game ever)
  • Jumpman
  • M.U.L.E.
  • Bandits
  • Ultimate Wizard
  • Park Patrol
  • The Seven Cities of Gold
These games are still fun after 30 years

Castlevania 2 NES

Blaster Master NES

Super Mario Bros 2 NES (Yes, I liked part 2)

Exile GEN

Phantasy Star II GEN

Shining in the Darkness GEN

Those are my go-to games whenever I travel with my Vita.

Yoshi's Island

Donkey Kong Country 2 (and 3,1)

Super Mario World

Super Mario RPG

Sonic 3 & Knuckles (and 2)

The Curse of Monkey Island

Full Throttle

Metal Slug X (and 1)

Day of the Tentacle

Crash Bandicoot: Warped (and 2)

Chrono Trigger

I've beat all of those at least a half dozen times each and beat most of them within the past year.

For me...

Super Nintendo / Super Famicom

  • Super Mario World - My first game and an all-time favorite
  • StarFox - An unforgettable experience
  • Donkey Kong Country - One of the greatest platformers of all time, in my opinion
  • Tetris Attack - My favorite puzzle game ever
  • Mega Man X - Few games come close to it
  • Super Godzilla - The only SNES Godzilla game I had until...
  • Godzilla: Kaiju Daikessen - A Japanese 2-D fighting game with Mechagodzilla 1974
  • Sailor Moon - Huge fan of the series. It was also my first SFC game
Nintendo 64

  • Mischief Makers - A golden gem in the N64 library. Absolutely love it
  • Virtual Pro-Wrestling 64 - The superior Japanese version of WCW Vs. nWo: World Tour
  • WCW/nWo: Revenge - Another classic wrestling game
  • WWF: No Mercy - Legendary for good reason
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Simply perfect
Game Boy Advance

  • Fire Pro Wrestling/Fire Pro Wrestling A - Best portable wrestling game ever. Lives in my GB Micro
Dreamcast

  • Fire Pro Wrestling D - Best of the series. Like FPA, it lives in my Dreamcast

Sadly i've beaten FFVIII at least once a year since it came out.

But, for me, it has to be Wizards and Warriors and Mega Man 2 on the NES; Chrono Trigger and Donkey Kong Country 2 on the SNES, Resident Evil 2 (any), and Lunar Silver Star Story and Eternal Blue Complete

Original LoZ - I try to play it every December. Got it for Christmas as a kid and it brings back great Christmas memories for me.

FF6 - if I had one game to take with me on a desert island this would probably be it. Find something new everytime I play it

Secret of Mana - I play through it every 5-6 yrs and now bought it on ios. Not nearly as good on ios (and much harder) but still same game at heart

PS1:

Spyro The Dragon (My disc got used so much, it became unreadable and I couldn't find another. I have this one downloaded on my PS3 now. :p )
S.C.A.R.S. (Racing game; It's my avatar. One of the most unique racers ever.)
Looney Tunes: Sheep Raider (Puzzle game in third person. Very tricky one at that, but loads of fun.)
Crash Team Racing (FTW over Mario Kart)

PS2:

The Sly Cooper trilogy. (I've beaten all 3 multiple times, but it just never gets old for me. I've got the originals, as well as the HD collection for PS3.)
The Jak and Daxter Collection (Same situation as Sly. Have the originals and the HD collection. Also still play Jak X. No, I don't play the bastard child known as The Lost Frontier.)
Tony Hawk's Underground 1 and 2 (Best skateboarding games ever.)

PC/Miscellaneous:

The original DOOM Trilogy (I have the collector's edition for PC and I also have DOOM 1 and 2 on my 360.)
TMNT (The 1985 Arcade game. Used to blow a number of quarters in the machine, but now I have it on my 360.)

It's a guaranteed fact that ever since its release when I was 13 years old, I play Ocarina of Time at least once a year.

Number 1 for me would have to be Megaman 2 for the NES, I play through it at least 10-12 times a year. Number 2 would be NHL 94 for the Genesis. I have played a complete season every year for the past 20 years (NJ Devils, Stanley Cup Champions, 20 years in a row and counting), beginning at the start of every October, even when there was a strike and no season. Although, this past season may have been the last with NHL 14 getting the option of 94's controls.

For me its the old school adventure games (Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, The Dig, Loom, Monkey Island 1 & 2, Kings Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, Indiana Jones, Zak McKraken and the Alien Mindbenders etc.). Basically any of the old school Sierra or LucasArts Adventures. I grew up playing them and have gone back and played all of them MANY times. They just never get old. Some of the more modern games that I can play time and time again include the Baldur's Gate series, the Icewind Dale series, Warcraft III, Diablo II, etc. I go back and play Warcraft III every year or two. In fact, its actually about that time as I haven't played it in awhile. It just never gets old.

Whats really sad is that many gamers today have gotten so hooked on achievements and trophies that they no longer play any of the older games. If there aren't achievements or points to be had, they simply wont play it. One of my good friends is like this and an article was posted recently on Raptr that talked about addiction to achievements and many of the people that responded in the comments section openly admitted that they no longer play games that don't have achievements. Personally, I think its pretty sad as those people are no longer gaming for the sake of playing and enjoying the game, they are gaming for the sake of getting a higher gamerscore. For people like that, gaming has become synonymous with achievement hunting. They would rather play a Hannah Montana game and get an easy 1000 points than go back and play a classic that didn't have achievements. I couldn't imagine not being able to go back and enjoy some of the older games from my past. In all honesty, I would estimate that roughly 15-20% of my time spent gaming is spent playing older games.

Don't get me wrong, I think achievements add an interesting component to games and I myself enjoy going after them from time to time, as long as they are interesting achievements that add to the quality of the game. That being said, achievements for me are always secondary to enjoying the game itself and I would never let achievements dictate wether or not I will play a particular game.

By system:

Nintendo - Super Mario 3

Super Nintendo - Secret of Mana (the opening song makes me tear up a little), honorable mention to Earthbound and Crono Trigger

Sega Genesis - Shining Force II - In fact any of the shining series including Landstalker, also Warsong, aka Langrisser. Honorable mention to Streets of Rage 2 and Toe Jam and Earl, Hula Girls!

Playstation - Final Fantasy VII

Saturn - Shining Force III

Dreamcast - Chu Chu Rocket - I know, all those amazing games and I can't stop playing this :)

Playstation II - Twisted Metal Black

Xbox - Jet Set Radio Future

Gamecube - Animal Crossing - I still love the overhead view more than the psuedo 3d view the new ones use

PC - Kings Quest 5/6 or Baulders Gate II

I really need to replay FF VI as that is one of my favorites but I never do for some reason.

Super metroid. Mario 3. Castlevania SOTN. Perfect dark (that is retro now right?) Zelda lttp. Chronic trigger. FF6.

I guess since it came out 13 years ago it's a classic. Super Robot Wars Alpha is one of the best Playstation games I've ever played. Like how Pokemon Gold and Silver was the pinnacle of the Pocket Monsters franchise, this is the best Super Robot Wars game worth playing. It has a crap load of secrets that every time you start a new game, you're gonna want to get a different unit.  I've been playing it so much that I just got the Gundam F90.

It's a must play if you're a robot anime fan, and you don't really need to know much Japanese to play it. Just go to this site, and it'll teach you to get into the groove of the series.  The sequel Alpha Gaiden was fan-translated into English, but it's a much tougher game.

I think the subject was 'game' not 'games'. No matter.

IO Silver for the Apple II. Obscure arcade puzzler published by utility kings Beagle Bros. Think fast! Super fun. If you've played this one, please respond with a quote.

Does anyone else prefer older games?  My go to system is still the SNES.  I had a friend over last night and we beat Final Fight 3 and played Mario Kart battle.  I've got NCAA 14 unopened and beat Far Cry 3 recently, but I play older games more than I do new ones.

It's hard to pick just 1. I can grab anything I listed as be equally satisfied.

I got another one to add.

Pokemon Blue (Actually been playing FireRed on my iPod's GBA emulator. It's ridiculously fun.)
